I've had a few experiences w/ Monk's and would highly recommend it as a good place to go after work for a few drinks w/ co-workers. Drinks are reasonably priced and the atmosphere...

Monk’s Pub has great burgers and empty peanut shells 3/18/2006

Monk’s Pub is a busy lunchtime and after-work joint in the Loop. The peanuts and empty peanut shells are everywhere, which seems like an inexplicable mess in the modern days of sanitary awareness. Fortunately the tasty burgers are served with Cajun fries and not a bunch of empty peanut shells. more

Monks has fantastic burgers! 8/26/2005

Monks Pub is somewhat hidden away on Lake Street and Wells. Unless you're really looking for it, you may pass it up. Their burger menu is extensive and also has a 'true' veggie burger. They have several different burger options with cheese, various toppings, and they all come with a generous side of fries (regular or Cajun) and a large pickle wedge. You also have the choice to have onions either raw or grilled. The vegetarian burger is not what I was expecting, but still good nonetheless. I was expecting more of a soy burger, but it actually has large pieces of avocado and other veggies inside the burger itself. The servers are nice and they will take reservations for larger parties. It's always a good idea to get reservations because the place fills up quickly! You also might want to bring a pair of sunglasses since it's really bright when you step outside after being in the pub for lunch. more

Monk's Pub--great dive bar downtown 8/4/2005

Monk's is usually packed at lunch time with office workers and lawyers in search of Chicago's best hamburger, served all different ways. After work, it is less busy but the floor quickly becomes covered in peanut shells. I especially recommend the seasoned curly fries and the nachos. For dieters or Atkins-types, you can get your burger without a bun and with a small salad rather than fries. For downtown Chicago, the price is reasonable, but they only have free soda refills at lunch--after work, you have to pay for refills. more

  • The Scene
It's dark and wood-paneled, with a long bar and plenty of closely bunched tables and booths. Servers, many of whom have been here for a long while, are very friendly--even when...
