Good food, consistent service 11/24/2010

When I see one star on a review here I have to wonder if somebody hung a sign out on another place and claimed to be Mirabelle, or maybe they ate a bad Mirabelle plum and assumed it was from the restaurant. I did see the review about the bartender, and I am hopeful that management will look into it. If it's true, its an abheration of the excellent service that I am accostomed to at Mirabelle's. more

I did see the review about the bartender, and I am hopeful that management will look into it. If it's true, its an abheration of the excellent service that I am accostomed to at Mirabelle's. The menu grows and changes over time, but I feel safe picking almost anything off the menu. Highly recommended more

Not what it useto be 9/30/2010

Read my review in chow hound. I hate to give one star but I feel like in this case it is really needed. I have been to this place well over a hundred times and fully enjoyed myself dining with friends and having lunch meetings. The service has always been the best and still is. With that said, I noticed the quality of the food has gone down, there's no thought to the dishes, it's just blah. I don't know what has changed. Did they get a new chef? A new manager? I'm not sure but what I am sure about is that restaurant basics were missing. No salt and pepper shakers at the table? It's not just my table but all the tables didn't have them. I had to ask the waiter-it's like having to ask for utensils or a napkin at a restaurant.  I also noticed the lively vibe of the place missing. The dining room use to be busy and so did the bar but now it seems like the place is taking a dive. God I really hope not, I've met the owner before and he was really sweet with me and my friends- he sat us down and even got our order for drinks. Overall my last experience was embarassing becase I was with fellow foodies. If not for the attentive servers the whole experience would have been worse. I would encourage management to step it up, get a consultant and turn this classic back into what it use to be. Focus your menu a little more and don't raise your prices - this will be the kiss of death for a restaurant in this economy. more

Transparent Bartender 8/30/2010

I stopped in Mirabelle after work around 6:45pm. I know they have a late night happy hour until 8pm. I took a look at the Happy Hour menu and ordered the cucumber martini and a bite to eat. Before making the drink, the bartender asked if it was o.k. to ring another drink on my tab and run my card as she was taking off shortly. I must say, I was taken aback. How rude. I asked if the Happy Hour was ending anytime soon, and she said no, that Happy Hour runs til 8pm. Not only did she pull this stunt with me, but solicited stacking an additional drink onto every other patrons bill before she left. Incredibly gaudy; I can only imagine what it is like to work on a shift following hers. She is taking money out of the next bartender's shift, and destroying the suspension of service by trying to squeeze an extra buck out of her clientele. Transparent! Needless to say, I won't be back. more

A Wonderful Experience 8/12/2010

My girlfriend and I stopped by Mirabelle's for a little discount happy hour drinking, with some eats to go along with it. While the prices were right, the thing that stood out the most was the exceptional service from our server John. Not only did he accomodate all our needs and wants, he was always checking out to make sure if we needed anything. While most server's can be overbearing, John was subtle in his attentiveness. Never intruding until the right time. Overall, one of the top 3 greatest servers I have ever had at any restaurant anywhere, and I eat out quite a bit. The food was also delectable. It was just a small sampling, seeing as how we were there for some happy hour deals. Those deals were very good. The chicken taco (spicy) was delicious, as well as the happy hour macaroni and cheese. We also had calamari, which was a bit tough, I've had much better in that regard, but overall, the food was very good. I can't hype the service enough though. That was the joy of the experience. Simply wonderful. Well done John. Well done!!!!!! more

Pretty Decor, Dry Turkey 3/15/2010

I enjoy Steve Martin. I like that he's had white hair for as long as I can remember, and that he's hosted SNL a bajillion times but was never a cast member, and that his last movie was a rom com where he smoked pot and made out with Meryl Streep. However, my favorite thing about Steve Martin is that he wrote "Shopgirl," a novella about a mousy young lady named Mirabelle who falls for a smooth, rich older man, and then cast himself as the smooth, rich older man in the movie adaptation. (Boy was he smooth though, guys. He bought gloves from her and then secretly sent them to her as a gift!) Jason Schwartzman was also in the movie, which is notable only because everything Jason Schwartzman-related is notable. Mirabelle the restaurant is totally the kind of place that Mirabelle the character would dine at with smooth, rich older men. It's managed to retained its stuffy fancypants-ness in a hip part of the Sunset Strip. Since I was there for lunch with my coworkers, I ordered a turkey burger with fries. The turkey part was kind of dry, but that's how turkeys are designed and that's how I like my burgers. That way it doesn't get soggy when I eat the other half for dinner as a side dish to my three mini dinner cupcakes. If I was there with a rich, older Steve Martin-type of man I probably would order something classier, like white wine and a complex salad. The restaurant is also nice for this sort of situation because it's kind of sunken in below the level of the sidewalk, so you feel like a sort of mole creature peering up, and it's good for discrete situations in case your friends walk by and you don't want them to see that you're out with a man old enough to be your father, or an ex-con, etc. more

  • The Scene
Walk down the handful of steps at this Sunset standby and enter a world of elegant dining with a touch of kitsch--Andy Warhol would dig the '80s-inspired lip-shaped sculpture. The glitzy pre-nightclub set sticks to the bar, while industry-ites and B-list celebs clutter the adjoining open-air restaurant and patio. Fresh seafood, daily oyster specials and classic entrees are the backbone of the American bistro fare. Jalapeno-spiced calamari is served with forgettable cocktail sauce, but the meaty blue crab cakes paired with tangy papaya relish and sweet chili butter are a hit. As an entree, tasty herb-encrusted Chilean sea bass, served on a bed of ratatouille, is a fish-lover's dream. The generous slab of grilled New York sirloin couldn't find a better companion than truffle mashed potatoes. Lamb lovers will enjoy the Colorado rack, simmered in its own rich juices and served atop a creamy pistachio risotto.
