Fast food service/ restaurant quality food 11/10/2009

Inattentive service and a language barrier causes slow service and confusion. Need to hire more English/Spanish speakers, not only the large number of Spanish speakers they currently have. They need to be a bit more diverse in who they hire so messages don't need to be translated/explained and or repeated. Things can be misunderstood and/or this process will only add time to processing and serving the customer. Leaving the hungry patron, impatient and starved and with an unhappy experience. Although Sit down service isn't quite as bad as their to go service where they don't even answer there phone; so don't bother ever calling. Pros: Good food Cons: Bad service more

My wife and I have been going to Mi Cocina for years. We continually return due to the consitency of great quality food, tasty margaritas, nice ambiance and good service. It's no wonder that many New Yorkers consider it one of the best in the city. Pros: Mexican food, Tequilas, Service more

Overrated, Overpriced, Tasteless Food 9/11/2008

Based on a favorable rating in Zagat's and positive reviews on this website, my girlfriend and I (along with a friend) went to dinner at Mi Cocina's recently eagerly expecting a tasty Mexican meal. What we got, instead in a word was - lousy. And that included everything from the service to the food to the prices. (I suppose, to be fair, the ambiance was nice and an initial look suggests that it might be a nice place for a date). First, this has to be one of the only Mexican restaurants in which chips and salsa are not complimentary. Rather, we spent $15 for mediocre (at best) guacamole and a couple of lousy salsas. Moreover, the chips, while better than store-bought ones, were nothing special. They were cold and flavorless. We still held out hope, however, that our main courses would redeem the meal. That hope was misplaced. The entrees were probably worse than the chips and salsa/guacamole. I can't speak for my friend who seemingly finished his selection (vegetarian enchiladas) merely because he paid way too much for it ($25). My girlfriend and I, however, were certainly not happy with our chicken mole and fajitas, respectively. Like the chips and guacamole (and salsa), these dishes were also bland. And they were also outrageously overpriced ($25 apiece). Thinking that at least one course would be worthwhile, we went ahead and ordered a dessert - "crepes." And again, reality crushed expectations, as this too was a disappointing slop of caramel, a few nuts and raisins, and uninspired doughy substance. Combined with overpriced (but tasty) margaritas our bill for three came to nearly $150.00. So basically, we each wasted $50 on a faux, tasteless Mexican meal. In short, don't waste your time or money on this place. (And you'll waste a lot of time because the service is slow, rude, inattentive and unhelpful.) Pros: None Cons: Everything - Food, Prices, Service all terrible. This restaurant deserves a 0 in Zagat's more

Had a Great time 7/10/2008

I went on a first date to Mi Cocina recently and we had a great time. We started off with some of the best margaritas I've had. This was followed by some really good, fresh tasting Mexican food. I had enchiladas while my date had a salmon dish. Both were excellent. I'd definitely go back to try their other dishes. The service was also good without being bothersome. Highly recommended! Pros: Food, Margaritas, Service more

Blah Food and Bad Service 7/10/2008

Despite four other people in the dining room, our wait for food and drinks was long. My salad was bland, despite the delicious description on the menu and our main courses were just, well, okay. Nothing special at all. The service was really poor, however, and brought the whole experience down to the lowest level. Reading the other reviews makes me feel like the restaurant is padding the ratings or something. The whole thing from beginning to end was so blah that I find it really hard to believe, given the small number of people in the dining room on any given eveining, that my experience was an anomaly. With so many good places to choose from in the area, there's no need to waste your time on this place. more

Mi Cocina has some of the best authentic Mexican cuisine I've had anywhere. Unique dishes and fresh ingredients make the difference. Mi Cocina also has a very extensive tequila list and the maragaritas here are fantastic. HIGHLY recommended. Pros: Cuisine, Ambiance, Tequila selection, Margaritas more

Bring back the Chilaquiles! 8/20/2007

I was a regular at Mi Cocina for over 5 years. THey have some tasty dishes and make an excellent Michelada. I have commonly found the service odd and inflexible however put up with it as I enjoyed the food, it seems almost like homemade and I live down the street. My favorite dish was the chilaquiles, a brunch item. THey have since done away with brunch - much to my sadness. I realize that chilaquiles are truly a brunch item however its so good that I would suggest serving it on the normal lunch and dinner menus. Most of the other items on the menu are good and though some feel overpriced, I think Mi Cocina is a higher quality Mexican resto, so not to be compared with Burritoville and the like, still, it is fairly pricy given the overall experience. Pros: you can always get a table, some very good dishes & good drinks Cons: no more chilaquiles (best dish), some dishes aren't great, service is strange more

A Cinco de Mayo in April 5/7/2006

MY friend and I were waiting for a warm day to try this restaurant since it's known for it's outside seating. Luckily, a sunny day in April seemed perfect. We sat outside, made it for happy hour, and had an axcellent meal. A little pricy, but worth it. We compare all Mexican restaurants to this one now. Pros: Margarita, Outside Seating Cons: Pricy more

WOW- I love Mexican food and this place is great! The decor makes it seem as though you are in another city but the food is totally perfect. Great for large groups or a place to take the parents - not at all a scene. Pros: great food, knowledgable staff, seasonal outdoor seat more

We love Mi Cocina. It is probably the best Mexican food I have ever had. It is authentic food, not tex mex, with really fresh and wholesome ingredients. my girlfriend is celiac and they went through all the ingredients in detail of the food - it is really fresh and made with original ingredients. It is not an exciting NYC scene like Dos Caminos, for example, but that suits us fine. It's not cheap, but totally worth it. Pros: Excellent food, Delicious margheritas, Great service Cons: A little pricey more

Finally, authentic Mexican Food! 7/4/2005

Its about time I found authentic Mexican Food in the city. Coming from San Diego/Tijuana, I am know what real Mexican cuisine should taste like. On Friday, we ordered an amazing dish called "Cochinita Pibil" which is an authentic Yucatecan dish that takes about 10 hrs to marinade. The dish was unbelievable! It was the perfect blend of spices and flavor---not too overpowering. Another dish highly recommended is the "Pollo en Adobada"--slightly spicy but delicious! It was definetely the best Mex food I have had in the city! Plus, the service was excellent and speedy--our waiter was Angel from Guadalajara, Mexico. Pros: attentive staff, romantic, fast seating Cons: slightly expensive, average margaritas more

Neighborhood favorite 6/13/2005

We've started coming here about once a week since April, because a margarita in the sun is hard to resist, and Mi Cocina has the best. The food is all excellent and made with high-quality ingredients. It's expensive, but they're not cutting any corners on quality so I'll pay. We've never had a problem with the service, in fact they've never been anything but polite. I've even sent food back when brought the wrong meal and they gave me nothing but an apology. They certainly didn't charge me for it. A table next to ours once had the wrong item on their check, but the waitstaff fixed the error without argument. Pros: outdoor seating, margaritas Cons: pricing more

OK, it's true that Mi Cocina ain't cheap, but that's only b/c we've gotten used to paying for Taco Bel* when we want "Mexican" food. This place is really, really good for New York City and it's not nearly as expensive as the snootier El C*d. The food is extremely well made [kickASS tamales!!!] and fairly healthy, the margaritas are strong and well mixed. When you mix in the lovely atmosphere, the prices aren't too bad. Great Margaritas 3/10/2004

I have searched Manhattan over for a decent margarita and this place has the best I've found so far. The best is the on-the-rocks margarita made with Grand Marnier is the best with the standard blended drinks being a good stand-by. Although the restaurant isn't on a super busy street the outside seating is fun in the spring and summertime for people watching. Also, if there's room they will let you have drinks in the tiny garder space in the back. more

What can we say - - - it' been around for years and it's a place we always seem to forget, but when we do go, it's always a treat. Food is wonderful and the ambiance is wonderful. Good margeritas too!!! Lots of tequila choices. Friendly waitstaff too. Great outdoor garden. Try the tortilla soup, enchiladas and the great chips and salsa. more

Excellent Authetic Mexican 9/4/2003

cmblitz Provided by Partner
After so many Americanized Mexican meals, I was thrilled to find authentic Mexican in a friendly neighborhood restaurant. My favorites are the camarones en pipian and various mole dishes. The maragaritas are great, but I prefer one of their great selection of tequilas or after-dinner liquors like the Xtabentun; if you remember tequila only from your college days, get ready for a completely different taste. The relatively new garden offers a romantic setting as compared to the more exuberant indoors. Sure its a little more pricey than most Mexican places, but it ain't Burritoville either: you get what you pay for. more
