Editorial review from Citysearch 1/26/2013

I was recommended to Dr Meltzer and i'm extremely pleased with my experience. His staff is wonderful, and the Doctor himself is very smart, accurate and works efficiently. I am very grateful for choosing him and for how wonderful and understanding he is with my particular circumstance. His staff did follow up with me the next day and were very kind. more

Excellent Doctor - so pleased I can go back to his office! 2/6/2012

I am a former patient of Dr. Meltzer and and so pleased that since my insurance changed I can return to his care. My other gyn just moved onto another group specializing in Oncology and in the search for a new doctor I refound Dr. Meltzer. He is terrific, straightforward, knowledgeable and funny. I rarely if ever go to male doctors, but Dr. Meltzer is one of a kind. I have some complicated gyn problems and am fully confident in Dr. Meltzer. more

Wonderful doctor and staff 6/3/2011

I found out that I had lost my baby at 15 weeks and was referred by my OB, who I completely trust, to go see Dr. Meltzer for a D&E. The doctor is top notch. His credentials are very impressive. He was kind, straight forward and caring. He's been doing this a long time. The staff was very friendly and answered all my questions honestly. I didnt want to hear some things they had said but they were things I needed to know (such as some of the scary things that could happen) I would recommend him to a friend or anyone in need of this service. I wish I didnt have to go through any of this but glad that if I did I had a good doctor. more

bad experience 7/28/2008

I had an bad experience with this office. He was nice enough but everything else was terrible.\r I went to Dr. Meltzer for pelvic pain. He seemed frazzled and distracted, barely looking at me. Someone interrupted us to ask why he was ordering tests that he'd already ordered for a patient. He asked her what was wrong with the woman, even though I believe he'd just seen her (and I think it was unprofessional to discuss it in front of me).\r During the exam people were knocking on the door while I had my feet in the stir-ups! He barely examined me (I guess you'd call it gentle) and claimed he found nothing out of the ordinary. He told me nothing, just said to have an ultrasound (which they don't do). \r The woman who took my samples for lab work told me they were out of certain tubes so they had to do it another way (out of supplies?). \r I was in there for 3 hours to give samples, a history and have a 5-10 min. exam. On the way out a office worker was loudly discussing late term abortions with a patient on the phone and even mentioned the patient's name.\r A lady called me with my lab results. She could not pronounce or spell the bacteria I had and didn't seem to want to go into detail (""you know, a uti? like its totally common!"" - well the bacteria I had is NOT common and dangerous). The prescription he ordered can be very dangerous to liver patients (he knew I was one) so I called to talk to him and they told me he NEVER calls patients. I said I didn't want to talk to his assistant because of my previous convo. Well too bad. I said I wouldn't be back, they did not care.\r \r I called to get a hard copy of my results and the lady was really rude, told me I had to come in sign releases and PAY FOR THEM- starting at $25, then per page. They charge even to fax them to another doctor! She said they were allowed to - well, just because you CAN doesn't mean you should.\r \r I reported them to the insurance co. they were NOT happy. And Quest Labs is faxing my results to me for FREE. Cons: charges for records even to other dr.s, rude unprofessional staff, lack of follow up and info more

Compassionate, Caring Doctor! 7/22/2008

I have been a patient of Dr. Meltzer's for 30 years. He is extremely knowledgable, and has a relaxed, but caring attitude towards his patients, which I appreciate greatly. Many years ago, my baby was born on a Sunday. He was not on call, but came in anyway to deliver him for me. Very rare for doctors to give up their own free time for their patients. He has delivered my two children, and has seen me through my whole lifetime of significant events and I feel so grateful and lucky to have found him those many years ago. more

Great Doc . . . Previous Reviewer must have had a bad day 12/13/2007

It is hard to know why my experience would have been so different, but I really couldn't disagree more with the previous reviewer . . .. I came to Dr. Meltzer with a really difficult problem which, thankfully, is almost completely gone. His surgical skills were top notch, and I found the family atmosphere of his office to be comforting and relaxing. . . particularly at a rough time. It is clear that there is a lot of love there. \r \r I also often heard Dr. Meltzer refer to other Dr.s by their first name, but I appreciated that he knew them well, some for decades, and, as such, was able to get their honest opinion of, and helpful information about, my condition. Oddly, unlike the other reviewer, who was offended that he called other Drs by their first names, I would never be so familiar as to call him Steven . . . . If you want to call your Dr. by his first name and get upset when he does the same, so be it. As for me, I'll take an extremely competent, caring Doctor with a kind hearted and comforting staff anytime. Pros: Really sweet staff, Highest competence, Very compassionate Cons: #$%^& insurance . . . not their fault more

unproffessional nursing staff, doctor is a poor communicator, find someone else if possible 7/26/2007

I had the unfortunate experience of going to Dr. Meltzer and his staff for a D&E following the in utero death of my baby. I was warned he had ""personality"" but was not prepared for the sarcastic and snippy atmosphere he and his staff have created for their patients. With Steven (he likes to be informal, insisting on referring to my other doctors by their first names) I felt ignored, teased, and humiliated. For instance, I was berated by his receptionist, a nurse, and then himself for not following directions (to bring my own ibuprofen to the pre-op appointment) that were never provided to me. I re-wrote his pre-post op instructions and mailed them back to him - would love to know if he incorporated any of my suggestions. My yucky memories with Steven and his staff includes: *the giggled warning from nurse #1 that I would be saying wierd things while medicated during the D&E - it would be funny, she said, but I wouldn't remember (laughing at the expense of grieving moms? - that's ""personality""); *while ordering my lab work, nurse #1 and nurse #2 engaged in an office chair bumper car-like game and answered each others personal cell phone; *Steven yelling highlights from a magazine article he must have been reading in his office to the receptionist at her desk (wine tasting at that place in San Francisco!!) while I waited for to see him. I have more substantial complaints that I am sharing with the referring doctor. If you or a friend is considering Dr. Meltzer -- unless it is an emergency, get another recomendation from your doctor!! Pros: i did not get an infection, i healed, i know better now Cons: attitude of doctor and staff, billing procedures, no communication of lab results more
