How is this place still open? 8/11/2008

The bartenders are extremely slow and inattentive. Drinks and food are completely overpriced. Kitchen is slow... considering the place was completely empty. Don't bother! Pros: Plenty of space Cons: Bartenders, prices, atmosphere more

Good food...just wish it had prices to match. 3/13/2008

I lucked out and slid into Mecca with a party of two on a Saturday evening. The first table they seated us at displeased me, but they were more than happy to move me to a more suitable table. The food and service were solid, but I couldn't help but feel like the menu was too limited...just not enough choices. It seems like the chef went a bit too minimalist. more

Great Bar Scene 1/10/2008

My friends took me out for a fun Birthday happy hour at the end of a crazy week and we had the best time! The cocktails are super tasty and the bar staff was great; they really made me feel special on my bday! I highly recommend the Orange Blossom. This place really draws a crowd, by 8pm the place was packed. I love that they place old movies on their big screen. The only thing I guess I didn't like was the music got kind of loud every now and then. We decided to stay for dinner and I enjoyed the food almost as much as my Orange Blossom. I had the Tuna Tartar and the Grilled Lamb Lollipops. I will come back just to have the Tuna Tartar. To top it off Tiffany from the first season of Top Chef was there, I am a huge fan. I didn't know this place was such a big deal. Pros: Great Cocktails and Fun Crowd Cons: Loud Music more

Avoid for now 12/2/2007

The menu had a mere 4 entrees. We were told the chef had quit and a new chef was working on the menu. Everything was pure salt or overly sweet. The Fillet Mignon requested medium was at best well done and dry. Creamed spinach was more like spinach in salty butter. Ribs so vinegary they were inedible. Pros: Great looking space Cons: bad food more

Best Happy Hour in the City 5/26/2007

Amazing meal! Fantastic restaurant! Three words: FOIS. GRAS. TACOS. okay, three more words: MINI. SLIDERS. ROCK. I have to go to more words than just three to describe the fabulousness that is Mecca. They have this amazing round bar where you can see everything that goes on in the restaurant at all times, and it's a beautiful scene to behold. They do a prix-fix menu every night of the week (and it changes every night too) for only $30 you get three courses of yummy soul food. So when happy hour ends at 7, and I guess i should go into why it's the best happy hour: $1 oysters, $2 sliders, and these indulgent fois gras tacos plus drink specials, you can stay and have a great dinner at one of their romantic booths. Great service, too. Attentive staff and the wine lists' divine. Pros: Fois gras tacos, cute waiters, TRUFFLE OIL french fries, excellent drinks. more

They are still fading away 5/20/2007

Had dinner here recently, party of two, wanted a wonderful date-type of evening. It was the third time in perhaps 4 years for myself. The circular bar is always novel and perhaps their best environment; it tends to have great bartenders. more

Chic Catro Hot Spot 4/18/2007

Mecca is chic, stylish and the food is cutting edge. Just last night I had foie gras tacos. Yes, crazy, i know, but absolutely phenominal. .. served with a strawberry salsa and cilantro. To die for. Pros: cocktails, crowd, food, bar staff, entire experience, valet, romantic, groups, everything! Cons: none! more

HOT, HOT, HOT!!!! 2/27/2007

What a great spot!!!!!!!! Having just moved to town from Chicago, I was looking for a place with great ambiance as well as five-star food...not always easy to find. Luckily someone recommended Mecca and I was glad they had valet. Three of us were seated promptly and our drinks appeared as if by magic after just a few minutes (I recommend the Lychee Daquiri--packs a wollop but goes down smoothly. Although the name is misleading; it's more of a martini). Things got better from there, I must say the food is the best I've had in San Francisco so far. I'll definitely be back! I also enjoyed chatting with the attractive waitstaff... Pros: Affordable, excellent cocktails, cute waitstaff, great ambiance, FANTASTIC FOOD Cons: absolutely none more

The Best Cocktail I've Ever Had 1/24/2007

I knew when I saw the Mecca BLUE DROP on the menu I had to order it, because the color was just so blue. It's basically the best lemon drop you can ever order, and the bar staff is so friendly!!!! I had an amazing time, I had just come in for a cocktail to check out the scene but it was so great we stayed and ordered some delicious appetizers, which happened to be only $1 per oyster as it was a happy hour. I think I have found my new favorite restaurant!!!!! Pros: Great cocktails, fabulous people watching, delicious food Cons: There were no cons. This restaurant is GREAT!!!!! more

Over-rated! 11/17/2006

Food was salty! Service was okay. Atmosphere was sociable, okay. As it's already listed, $$$$$$$$$$!!!!! more

What a shame. A great restaurant gone horribly, horribly wrong. 10/28/2006

The ambiance is still great as are their drinks. Love the SoCo Manhattan with the brandied cherries! The rest, alas, of what used to be a great experience is now pitiful. Cons: Portions, servers, twelve-year old manager in an ill-fitting suit more

Delicious yet again 9/13/2006

Mecca is consistently one of the best restaurants in San Francisco. They have gone through some changes in the past year, and all seem to be for the better. The food just keeps getting better, but some things, like dollar oysters and happy hour seven nights a week, stay the same. Every experience at Mecca, both in the dining room and at the bar, is a stellar one. I can't wait to see Spencer Day on New Year's Eve!!! They are bringing him back for a second year in a row and if it's anything like last years, it will bring down the house. The prix fixe menu last year was truly an amazing culinary experience, I'll bet they'll outdo themselves this year. Way to go, Mecca!!!!!!!!!!! Pros: ambience, cocktails, dollar oysters Cons: wish they were open seven days a week, and would bring back the fabulous brunch!!! more

The Bloom Has Fallen 8/8/2006

We used to be HUGE fans of Mecca - the bar, the music, the drinks, the oysters, the fries, the food, the FUN! Now there is a new chef.........smaller, meager portions that do not live up to the prices. $26 for a tiny chicken entree that lacked any flavor, the smallest half lobster appetizer known to man (I've seen tiger prawns bigger) for $19. The fries used to be those nice, skinny crunchy things now they are fat and droopy - the food was very disappointing. The drinks and the servers are still great but I do not think that we will be doing anything but drinking at Mecca in the future which is so sad because we have so many fond memories of great dinners there. Pros: Great bar, great atmosphere, nice servers Cons: Food is poor value for high prices, new chef not as good as previous more

slow service but good food 8/3/2006

My bf and I went to Mecca for the first time for dinner last Friday night. We had a reservation for 8:30 and the restaurant wasn't too busy, to our surprise. The bar area was huge and techno music was quite loud, which we could hear clearly from our dining table. After we placed our order for food, we had to ask our server to bring over the bread because it didn't look like it would ever come on its own. The butter spread was delicious though. Food really took forever, but once it arrived, we were very happy because everything was delicious! The lobster bisque was served in a clear glass container with a seal-tight lid. I could have had 3 servings of it! We had the best Kumamotos here. Don't know why... but they were so plump, HUGE (double the usual size), and super fresh! Better than any we've had at Hog Island, Foreign Cinema, etc. Kobe beef and pork chop was fair, but dessert was both pleasing to the eyes and yummy to the mouth! I think the presentation deserved an A+. Our waiter noticed that our food took forever, so he informed the host and he stopped by our table and offered us complimentary dessert wine. Nice touch. Pros: lobster bisque, excellent dessert Cons: slow service more

Great Service, Better Food 7/14/2006

We were at Mecca for dinner on Friday for the first time in years. We'd had such bad experiences in the past, but word that there were new owners and a new chef encouraged us to return. We were not disappointed. The dining room and bar look just as great as ever. And if you've never been in the bathrooms here, it's worth the trip! They are the coolest in the city. Our server was friendly and very knowledgeable of the menu. Service was prompt without being pushy. I had the halibut, which is probably the best fish dish I've had in at least a year. My partner had the kobe steak which was cooked perfectly, which meant hardly at all. The new chef certainly proved his worth to me. This is the best food that's been served at Mecca in all of my trips there. Pros: Food, Service more

awful 7/9/2006

this place is awful! i have heard quite a few things about this place, yet went in just to try it out. everything that i had heard was confirmed. the space is nice and swanky---the only good thing! the servers were running around like crazy trying to keep up with the customers--it looked as if they didn't have any support staff. not once did a busser or manager walk into the dining room to assist the servers. the food was bland and awful. there were'nt any outstanding flavors and it was apparent that the kitchen was undergoing some change. i am in the restaurant industry and have heard that the owner of mecca fired the former chef and also that recently the entire kitchen staff walked out. doesn't look like a good place to work or eat...just go somewhere else! more

service was the worst i've ever had 6/30/2006

the waitress was terrible. i went with a big group and i was not very hungry so i planned to order an appertizer and a dessert. i told the waitress to hold the appetizer and bring it out when everyone got their meals. the meals came and went and no appetizer. the waitress did not check on us so everyone finished eating while i was sitting there with nothing. when she finally came i told her that i didnt want the appetizer anymore because everyone was done and i didnt want to be the only one still eating. a few minutes later she showed up with the appetizer! i told her again that i didnt want it and she took it back and said she would bring a dessert menu for me. well, she did. but she did not say anything when she brought it and kinda just dumped it in the space next to me. then she shows up again with menus for everyone else, which she placed in everyone's hands individually. i never gave her a hard time and i have no idea why she would act like that. i will never go there again and will advise everyone i know not to go there either Cons: the waitstaff more
