Yep, absolutely wonderful food to please your palate...worth the wait, and worth the expense. Take the time to treat yourself.

They don't know diddly about barbecue! 12/13/2007

Avoid this place! They don't know how to properly grill steaks, and you can't get it ""just the way you want it,"" even if you give them a second or third chance. The owner is officious and doesn't respect customers' tastes. You can find better steaks elsewhere, such as the Madonna Inn in San Luis Obispo. Pros: Nice area Cons: No knowledge of grilling and poor customer service more

So-so food and Pseudo Francoise Owner/Manager! Pas de 7/12/2007

I just read the last entry and thought ""deja vu!"" The guy who owns this place has an ego bigger than a pregnant hieffer! The food is not terribly enticing and when I wanted to complain about my poorly cooked steak, the manager/owner was simply brusque and didn't want to hear a word of what I had to say. I was appalled and don't ever recall such treatment since I was in Paris in the 70s and encountered a self righteous French chef who didn't understand what I mean by the word ""stale."" The food at McPhee's isn't horrible, but it ain't no haught cuisine, either, and the owner/manager... well, he's just too good for his britches. Want good beef? You can save a lot of money and get more taste (in more ways than one) at In and Out burger up the road near Atascadero! Pros: Nice town and surroundings Cons: One bad apple... can't ruin the batch, or can it? more

Horrible Service 3/26/2007

Our group of 10 (all in our late 20's) went to this restaurant for an early dinner. The service was very slow. One of the ladies in our party used the women's restroom (which the floors were very slippery at the time, they may have just cleaned them) and slipped into the door on her way out. She is a little over 100lbs, and the manager (which I found out is also the owner) accused her of breaking the door jam and asked us to finish our meals and leave. I used the restroom subsequently and the door was fine. I asked to speak to the manager, he refused. He briefly stopped by our table, and informed us to pay our bill and leave and then walked away saying that he is to busy to speak to us. We finished our meals and on our way out I attempted to speak to the manager again. He would not give me the time of day and said that he could care less about our business. This is an extreemly poor way of conducting a business. The food was great, but the service was horrible. If you have any other options, please avoid this restaurant. Pros: Great Food Cons: Horrible Service more

Great Quality and portion size 11/17/2006

I love this place, it is the best place in town to get a steak dinner!! The portions are huge, defintiely enough for leftovers, and the service is unbeatable. They have a fairly comprehensive wine list. They also do brunch on Sundays with all you can drink mimosas....soooo good!! Pros: The food is high quality and the price is right. Cons: I have no cons about this place. always a great experience. more

A treasure on the central California Coast 3/5/2006

Several years ago when visiting Cambria, I was heart broken to find that one of my favorite restaurants in the world no longer existed! Ian's had closed.......not being satisfied that he could simply disappear into thin air I asked around. Sure enough, Ian had created a new location call McPhee's Grill in nearby Templeton. It's a lovely relaxed restaurant that still serves the world-class cuisine his Cambria location was famous for. The fresh ingredients, the flavorful surpises and the wonderful location just off Highway 101 in Templeton combine to create a DO NOT MISS opportunity for travelers, whether passing through or staying in the area. I'm looking forward to my next visit in April! Pros: exellent food, easy access from 101, relaxed atmosphere more

McPhee's... McPhoey! 7/2/2005

I went to McPhees twice in the past month and ordered two cuts of beef. On both occasions I had to send the steak back. The kitchen does not understand what the standards are for medium rare... no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't get them to cook my steak correctly. I would not recommend this place, despite what I'd heard were rave reviews by locals. I'm from the midwest, and I know beef. McPhee's Grill does not. more

Wonderful 3/11/2004

We go several times a year, always for Valentines Day. The food is always fresh, consistent, with great service. Ian is almost always there and makes the best sauces around. His wife makes to die for cheesecake. If your around the Sunday Champagne Brunch is wonderful, huge selection, lots of fresh shrimp, smoked salmon, a variety of salads, plus 4-5 cook to order items as well, all for less than 20 (although when we started going it was a steal for 13). Pros: fresh food, great variety, consistent service more

Perfect stop in between LA and SF 6/15/2002

If you're ever driving between LA and San Fran and you need to great place to stop, rest, and get a good bite, look no further than McPhee's. You don't have to sacrifice taste because you're on the road. They serve mostly California nouveau cuisine. Very good. Pros: Great food, Convenient on drive, decent prices Cons: in Templeton only more
