Wow all of these people are complaining 4/10/2012

Wow all of these people are complaining about bad service, and two weeks ago when we were there on a Saturday night we left our server a HUGE tip b/c we experienced the exact opposite! Our server was outstanding! He was prompt, courteous and obliged all of our requests. We caught a movie later in their upstairs theater and had great service up there too. McMenamin's has great bar food, but not-so great regular food. I think if you go there knowing that then you won't be disappointed. That being said, my husband's steak sandwich was dry and could have been vastly improved with a side of dipping sauce; while my pasta dish was amazing! So, go figure lol. The only reason I docked them a star is because the theater room could use some different seating other than what they currently offer. This is a hotel, and should reflect some of the character-otherwise, it was a great experience! more

Worst Service EVER! 8/18/2011

McMenamins already has a reputation for horrible service but the Grand Lodge takes this to a whole new level. It's amazing how a company can operate, seemingly profitably, but provide the absolute worst service of any place around. Why don't people support all of the excellent brew pubs in and around the Portland area and stop letting mcMenamins get away with such terrible service/food. It's a shame because they have cool places, but I refuse to go back. I'll give my business to someone who cares and wants it! When and if you get your order taken, the food, if it arrives, is not hot and rarely any good. The beers are ok but nothing amazing. My last experience (and I do mean LAST), we waited for over 45 minutes to get our order (for food) taken. Then after 75 minutes we left. McMenamins brothers - Are you proud of your empire? You should'nt be! more

WORST SERVICE EVER! 8/17/2011

We were so excited when The Grand Lodge came to town, it is a beautiful place and the grounds are kept up and actually MANICURED! that is where the beauty ends. I only go when there is an event and out of convenience, because of a class event or my friends want to go sit outside and have a brew in the summertime. Each and EVERY time we are dissapointed with the service (takes a minimum of 15 minutes to have a server get over to take your order), but that is not where it ends, it is another 30-40 minutes before you actuallly get the drink. we have ordered 2 at a time so that helps but the2nd drink is hot by the time you are ready to consume it. They have the RUDEST staff EVER! they all act like they HATE their jobs. if you hapen to complain to the manager you just may get YELLED at! and dispite of numerous complaints it remains the same...sad but the McMenamin Brothers are into ""cool"" places and good beer..the staff, and overpriced food that is horrible is not on their radar, and anyone you ask has the same experience, service is horrible, food is cold and greasy...and bad attitudes abound. Time to wake up boys, clean house and start over. you could make SO much more $$$ just by implementing CUSTOMER SERVICE! just think if you could sell more than 2 drinks per customer in 4 hrs! I know a lot of Great experienced servers that have NO interest in working there, they do not want to be associated with the horrible service and attitudes! more

Eminence Facial 4/10/2011

I recenty ran into this place, and was pleasantly surprised the Grand Lodge had such a nice spa! I scheduled a facial after a long hike near by, and found the greatest gem! I live in Portland and now I will have to make a few visits at Ruby's. Clean professional and the facial was amazing!!! more

If you want slow service, bad food yet good drinks... 2/19/2011

This is your place for bad food and service. Every time I come back here, I think it will improve, or I think, Hey, it was just bad luck....NO. I like you can walk around its huge yard in the summer and drink where ever you like. That is about it. more

Rethinking Mcmenamins 9/24/2009

So I have been going to Mcmenamins for 7+ years (hotels and restaurants) and lately in the last few years there food quality and restaurant staff have been subpar. My husband and I just got back from the GL for our anniversary and decided to do the Hammerhead package. Let me say that Mcmenamins has okay bar food but to spend 20+ on a steak and then receive it over an hour later and it be cold, and seem as if it were sitting out on the hotplate with dry mash was unexcusable. The wait staff was awful as well-not even apolologizing or checking to see if our food was okay. This is not the first time we have had bad service in Mcmenamins bars and restaurants and will now not be returning to them. On the good side-when we complained about it we were given prompt attention at checkout and received not only a gift certificate but also a phone call from the restaurant manager the following morning. Hopefully with more honest reviews Mcmenamins can begin to bring back the quality! Pros: great atmosphere, good concierge and lodging Cons: Horrible Service, Awful food more

Great place to relax! 6/24/2009

A friend of mine was getting married a couple weeks ago and so a few of us scheduled services here as a bachalerette party . My massage was the best that I have ever had! She worked every kink out of my back and I was so relaxed I almost fell asleep. After my appointment she took the time to give me some water and show me some streches to help my posture. My friends were all extremely pleased. The bride loved her massage too, and they had a japanese soaking pool for all of us to sit and relax in afterward. The entire staff was super freindly and not stuck up like many spas I've been to. I would recommend them to anyone who needs to relax and get some TLC. Pros: Friendly and educated staff. Not a stuck up spa! Cons: none! services are worth every penny. more

Great Place with Awful Service and even worse Food 1/17/2009

We absolutely love the Grand Lodge and go there quite a few times each year wiht the kids. However, as much as we like the place for the atmosphere, I am so disappointed that there service and food is consistently terrible.\r \r We went again last night for dinner. The drinks were fine but the boys and my wife had cheeseburgers that were like leather. and I had prime rib that was comparable to that at Home Town Buffet (Literally).\r \r I mean this was AWFUL and even though I ordered the smaller portion, I didnt come close to finishing it and I left still hungry.\r \r Furthermore, although our waitress was very nice, the service was terribly slow. My kids literally wanted to leave long before our food arrived. It took about 30+ minutes to get our food.\r \r Although I cant say we wont be back (we will), I honestly wish they'd improve the food and the service.\r \r PLEASE McMenamins......Make the place achieve it's potential. What a wonderful property it's such a shame to ruin it with crappy execution. Pros: beautiful property and fun for kids especially in summer Cons: Absolutely terrible food and service more

Want service? don't come here. Want good food? yah, don't come here for that either. 5/13/2008

At at the Iron Work Grill. Not only was the service just unreal, but the food was so terrible. I don't think anyone at our table of 8 finished or liked what they ordered. We ordered drinks with our appitizers. They never came with the drinks, I had to go to the bar to get them. Came back and they had finally arrived. We then went to the bar, where the bartender was more than just rude. Then, went to our room where the sink leaked all over the floor and where we were woken up at 7am to the sound of banging and what not from them ""installing a window in the basement"". that must have been some window. When we checked out, we told them of the noise and thier response was ""Once we heard about it we put a stop to it right away"" which was so funny because it was still going on (it was 11am at that point) and it was even worse than it was at 7am and could be heard through out the whole building. Pros: Uh, Not one that I could think of Cons: Everything. more

Too bad the food isn't as good as the atmosphere 11/17/2006

The food here is bad. We've given it so many chances it isn't funny. Finally, we decided to stop trying. It was never going to be good. \r \r We stayed the night here once, for my Birthday. I didn't sleep all night because the bed was so non-supportive and uncomfortable.\r \r They do have good beer, as they brew their own, but it is more expensive than your average pub price. The the atmosphere is awesome! Lots of artistic paintings on the walls and stuff. This place has GREAT potential if they would just get a good chef in the kitchen, it's not like they don't have the money!!! Pros: good atmosphere Cons: expensive, bad food, more

Lots of variety 11/2/2006

I have never stayed in one of the hotel rooms but we do go as a group quite often. Movies, several bars, soaking pool, live bands, FOLF, several restaurants, etc. If you can't figure out what to do visit the Grand Lodge... Pros: Tons of variety Cons: far away more

Only stay on the weekends. 6/4/2003

Most of the lodge (wine tasting, movies, other) can only be enjoyed on the weekends or in the evening (after 6 pm). Staying during the week is a waste. There is not very much to do except drink & play pool & lounge. Make the 2 hour trip to Edgefield instead, that place is loaded. Pros: Inexpensive Cons: Little to do more

Great place to get married 10/29/2002

We got married here in June of this year and were delighted with how our event turned out. Shannon McMenamin helped us to plan the event and prepare so that things went smoothly. We were able to spend the night here the night before and the night of our wedding which was great. Guests were able to stay here as well if they chose to do so. We were able to have massages, the rehearsal dinner, the rehearsal, ceremony and reception as well as a morning after breakfast with family all at one location and it was great. The only time service was a little lacking was in the pub - not bad, just not prompt. We had the suite and a personal bathroom - other rooms were European style and guests had to use bathrooms in the hallway. Pros: Great parking, Variety of services more

Probably won't be back 7/9/2002

I stayed there overnight in the middle of the week. Boring! They don't open the wine tasting room or gift shop until the weekend. Ate in the main restaurant and had to practically beg the waitress to take our order. Then tried to go to the Yardhouse Pub for a drink and the waitress there seemed annoyed at our presence. Waited several minutes and when she didn't even acknowledge our existence, we left. We were pretty much the only ones there and I think she wanted to close a few hours early. The day after we checked out, I went to the McMenamins website to rate my stay and never got a response. All in all, pretty disappointing. A nice property is not enough; you need to back it up with decent service. more
