Cozy Atmosphere, Fresh Dishes 4/19/2008

May Street Market is inviting from the moment you enter. The warm tones in the restaurant are cozy and classic. It is perfect for a date or a nice group dinner. I love how they change their menu seasonally. The food tasted spot on and full of the freshest ingredients. The wine list was great and there are a lot of different wines to choose from. I would definately check it out if your looking for a great meal without all the trendy hoop-la. Pros: Great food, cozy spot more

Like the "City that Works"...Everything at May Street Market just works... 4/12/2008

Everything from start to finish just felt right. Hostess greeted us like a friend greeting her friends at her front door. Our server took pride in the complexities of the dishes, his expertise and the quality of the food. We started with their signature app of maytage blue cheesecake and it did not disappoint. Our entrees sang with flavor; intricate balance and blends of flavors and textures were well thought out and outrageously successful. Service was pleasant and super attentive with out being intrusive throughout the evening. When we left we felt like we were leaving a great dinner party. Definitely hope to go back again soon. Pros: food, service, ambience more

Extraordinary Food, Service and Ambiance 11/21/2007

I have been to this restaurant three times now and it only gets better! May Street Market is easily the best restaurant in Chicago. The menu is diverse and changes every 3-4 weeks in an effort to use organic local fresh produce (e.g., from the Green City Market). I am a vegetarian and the vegetarian selections are excellent and also change on a regular basis. My friends are not vegetarian and they continue to be elated with their food too. I should mention that the menu is mostly meat/seafood and that is their specialty but there are at least 2-4 appetizers/salads/soups and 2 entrees that are vegetarian (and awesome!). The unique and ever-changing menu uses interesting combinations of ingredients to create dishes that are out of this world. Further, the service is top-notch and the comfy dining rooms (there are 2) make this a place to keep on visiting. I plan to come back on a regular basis to see what the chef has in store next. I highly recommend this place. Pros: Spectacular Food, Service and Ambiance; Excellent Wine List; Ever-changing menu; Valet Parking Cons: Absolutely None more

Will be back--and soon. 5/19/2007

I went to May Street Market last night, after looking at the tribune review and finding the menu prices reasonable in comparison. The food was excellent, maytag blue cheesecake and morel appetizers were delicious and the entrees were just as good (venison and stuffed tomatoes). The hostess and waiter were friendly and accomodating and there was a bottle of water on the table, so we never ran out--not sure how the review below had such a difficult time. The space is perfect for groups or even a date, stuck w/ martini's though--so I can't comment on the wine selection. I left feeling I had definitely gotten my moneys worth food AND service wise, I'll definitely be back. Pros: Morel Appetizer (go while you still can), Service Cons: Interesting chair fabric... more

Phenominal....Well worth the trip to its obscure location 4/11/2007

I had a wonderful experience at May Street Market. The food was fantastic, the service was great, and the wine our waiter suggested has now become our favorite white wine (Huia). The between-course treats that come compliments of the chef are a wonderful touch. The location is somewhat inconvenient. We took a cab to the restaurant, but had a very hard time flagging down a cab upon leaving. It took us at least 20 minutes. So, I highly recommend going to May Street Market, but do so knowing how you can get home if there are no taxis, which there may not be. Pros: Great food, service, and wine. The small extras are nice! Cons: Somewhat pricey, location is inconvenient to get to and from more

bad service, mediocre food, high prices 3/22/2007

I'm sorry, chantal, but I must disagree with you. Your servers not only don't know much about your menu or wine list, but they also are incapable of pouring the bottle of wine that their customers order ( I shouldn't have to pour my own bottle of wine when I'm out to eat.) Water refills were also hard to come by, as were silverware with which to eat our food with. And speaking of food, it was no where near befitting of the prices you charge.....bland, tasteless, are words that come to mind when I remember my dinner at your restaurant, and I wouldn't be so upset about it were you not all over several Chicago CUSTOMER FEEDBACK websites such as this and several others touting how wonderful your restaurant is. I suggest you step away from the computer and get back to training your staff on how to treat their guests who are spending large amounts of money on a very subpar experience. My waiter admitted to our party that he had never actually tasted most of the menu and therefore could not offer much advice.....and I'm supposed to trust his expertise? I don't think so. I could excuse this if I was paying TGIFriday prices, but not when I'm paying May St. Market prices. I als can't excuse dirty wine glasses and long waits between courses, and I certainly have no tolerance for the curt hostess who suggested that we allow more time for dinner when I mentioned the wait to her...since when is 2 hours not enough time for dinner for a party of 2? I consider my dinner at your restaurant money thrown down the drain. Pros: none I can think of Cons: pretty much everything! service, food and price more

Delicious food, nice atmosphere, a must see! 1/7/2007

While on a layover in Chicago we went to May Street Market to see what they had to offer. We had been told by several people to try May Street. First impressions: Exellent location, great atmosphere, skilled staff, and a tasty menu made us optimistic. I had sea scallops with polenta while my companion had filet medallions with a more traditional mashed potato. We both ordered a salad and shared a crab cake appetizer which the server gladly split. The appetizer was delicious. The crab cakes were perfect in flavor and were served with a pomegranate ice which was the best compliment to the crab cakes. The salad was tasty too! One thing I liked was the way they brought water to the table. If you have tap water with your meal they bring it out in a chilled bottle rather than having someone come around and refill your glass. The main course was satisflying, but my entree lacked flavor at times. The scallops were delicious, but the polenta was bland and simply soaked up moisture from the veggies making it soggy. I would have liked more of a sauce here. My companion's mashed potatoes were too salty. One big critique here: They need to fire their bartender. The drinks we ordered were mediocre. The Long Islands tasted like sour mix and club soda. The only drink he didn't mess up was my scotch on the rocks. Overall it was a great place and we'll be back. Pros: Nice menu, tasty food, excellent presentation. (Good date restaurant!) Cons: Terrible mixed drinks - stick with wine. more

Simply amazing food, good wine list, pleasant atmosphere 8/31/2006

F****ing amazing!! I have only eaten here twice (so many places to eat, plus fav's, plus cooking at home!), and each time blew me away. First meal: venison medallions, chive spaetzle, lingonberry sauce, carrot puree. The venison was flavorful without being gamey, the spaetzle was good (I suspect they have an honest-to-god spaetzle maker), and the lingonberry sauce reminded me how unerused this ingredient is. If anything, give the sauce more zip with the lingonberries. Second meal...foie gras heaven!!! My wife and I must have sub-consciously known the ban was going into effect because it was everywhere: seared and plated in the scrumptiously sweet corn soup; rolled in my lamb, rolled in her duck; seared and served with her duck; I almost ordered a second round of the soup for desert! But seriously, these two entrees show one (and there are many) of the strengths of May Street: the lamb was served three ways (chops, roulade, and an amazing shredded lamb wonton); the duck was served multiple ways (rare breast; roulade; one I am forgetting; along with the seared foie gras). Really, these entrees blew away the typically entree (including the incredibly mediocre prix fix Valentine's Day menu at Bin 36 which featured a similar duck item). All in all, this place is a welcome addition to my burgeoning "West Town," and has slightly better food, but not quite as good of wine as the West Town Tavern. Pros: Food, parking, food Cons: The chocolate torte is overdressed more

One of Chicago's Best New Restaurants 8/30/2006

May Street Market is excellent. Signature Maytag Blue Cheesecake appetizer outstanding. Mussels/lemon soup was special (Note: it was suggested that it be split as a mid-course) Vennison - the best I have ever had. Lamb - good not great. Chocolate Flourless cake could use some perking up. French Press coffee a lark! Service from Julie - world class. Wine list unique, and fairly priced. Area is industrial. Parking a little tough. Maitre 'd couldn't break a conversation to say good-bye. We will go back. Pros: One of Chicago's Best New Restaurants Cons: Can be noisy when full more
