Delicious food & 'the bomb' appetizers! 8/1/2010

I've been going to Marco's for 10 years now and they had been excellent as far as everything you would expect in a restaurant atmosphere. The staff is super friendly, the atmosphere is awesome (not to mention: Happy Hours are the best to go there with your friends), and the food is just scrumptious! Go now and they will make your day or evening! Pros: Happy hour menu, best staff! Cons: nothing more

Great Resaurat. Great Experience. 8/1/2010

As I walked in a friendly smile was waiting for me to be seated. Got some yummy bread, got some super yummy food, and ended with a super tasteful dessert! I have nothing but complements about marcos. Great place to dine! and best of all, it created a lasting experience! I definitely recommend. I gave it a try and I'm ready to come back again. Pros: Amazing customer service, tastful food more

Cool place & delicious Italian cuisines 8/1/2010

I came to Marco's a while ago for breakfast and had "Marco's Breakfast." It comes with a great amount of food. I am very impressive the way they presented the food. They just make the breakfast look a little fancy, but the price is still decent. btw, I especially like the bacon and sausage. A few days ago, I came to this place again with my friends. We got some pizza to share and other entrees. I like the Pizza Mamma. The pizza is full of small pieces of chicken with cheese and tomatoes on the top. Moreover, the pesto gives more flavor to the whole pizza and makes it taste less greasy. I also got Melanzane Alla Parmigiana for myself. It is fried eggplant layered with tomatoes sauce. I got this because I LOVE eggplant. However, I was worried that it might be a little greasy and too salty, but it turned out pretty good. I think this dish look like lasagne, but it just replaces pasta with eggplant and brings out different flavors and textures. Also, the presentation of food is good. I also like the simple space design which makes the whole space warm and neat. The service is good as well. The atmosphere is also very comfortable to chat with friends. The only problem is parking because it is located in West Hollywood. I was lucky to get a free spot on the street, but a friend of mine took a while to find one. Pros: great food, nice service, neat & warm place Cons: parking more

Sangria Sunday and Weekday Happy Hour. Yes, please! 1/14/2010

There seems to be a bit of confusion over the three locations for "Marco's" on Santa Monica Blvd. This review is for the trattoria...not the cafe or the pizzeria. My friend and I popped in on a Sunday afternoon looking to grab a quick bite. We noticed they had a happy hour menu with ahi tuna tacos, by this point I was drooling. YUM! The server informed us that the happy hour menu was only M-F but that they were in the middle of Sangria Sunday--which meant $5 sangrias for us. He also talked to Marco, who said he would go ahead and prepare the tacos for me and only charge the happy hour menu prices. YAY! We enjoyed a lovely meal and service and I made a note to come back. On the second visit I took a different friend out for a treat. The servers were fabulous and we had access to the full happy hour menu this time. However, Marco was not there this night. We ordered the tacos again, as well as the chicken skewers and parmesan fries. The tacos were skimpy and totally unsatisfying this time around and the skewers were a bit overcooked. The fries were super delicious. These had a nice parmesan flavor with lots of herbs which made them absolutely delightful. I would go to the trattoria again. But, I will call first to make sure Marco is there. :-) Pros: Marco, Sangrias, Happy Hour Cons: If Marco isn't there the food isn't as well prepared more

really? went here with a friend who wanted to surprise me. hmmmm ive been before a year ago. it was bad then. now its just plain terrible seriously good reviews from citysearch? i suppose people think that olive garden is italian food? horrible food. just plebian and overpriced and under qualiy Pros: location, interior, wine list, service Cons: food quality more

Great Italian, Non-Pretentious, Affordable, Their Own Parking. 11/26/2008

I've been going to Marco's for some 15 years now, beginning when it was run by Marco's mother. She would seat us as if we were guests in her home. Although "Mama Marco" (as we always call her) is no longer with us, I still feel her presence every time we enter the restaurant. Water, foccacia and menus all show up almost as soon as we're seated. "May I get you a beverage?" is one of the first things we hear. No "my-name-is-Steevan- and-I'll-be-your-waiter", but instead a more-personal "how are you this evening?" From the fresh foccacia with tomatoes, then to minestrone soup and Caesar salad, and then the main course (hmm...what tonight? Lasagna? Pizza? Ravioli, spaghetti, chicken piccata?) Everything I've ordered is delicious, which makes it hard to decide. I often choose lasagna bolognese - I love lasagna but it's really time-consuming to make at home, and this is probably better than mine anyway... Their portion is so generous that i often take half home and have it for lunch the next day. My boyfriend loves their meat ravioli in bolognese sauce, always asking our waiter for "extra, extra" sauce. Last night it was pizza - medium crust, "Mama's Special". Really delicious, very filling. After soup and salad, we couldn't finish it and took half home - which we reheated and devoured for a midnight snack. Everything - bread, tomato sauce, iced tea, tiramisu - tastes freshly-made. That's why I could eat here a couple of times a week and not tire of it. L.A. may be a food 'scene', but Marco's isn't part of any 'scene'. Good food, made from scratch, with a warm staff. It's like eating in my grandmother's home, but without the guilt. Pros: Delicious, fresh food. Free parking (!!) Relaxed, unpretentious. Small and intimate. Patio available. Cons: Landlord (Walgreen's) wants to tear down and build a drugstore, so no improvements to the premises for a while now. more

YOUR SEARCH HAS ENDED! 10/30/2008

Looked at countless reviews to find good pizza last night, then stumbled on this place. I'm sure glad I did! Had a 100% great experience. Great people - Great food - Fair Prices. Pros: Stop reading and go have a great meal. Cons: You're not there yet! more

you feel catered to 4/29/2006

We finally tried Marco's after having been by it a bazillion times. Walking in you immediately think small, but warm and cute. The menu offers something for everyone, along with a list of pasta dishes that are a twist on standard italian fare. I really enjoyed the spinach and roasted garlic ravioli, and my boyfriend gave a thumb's up to his Lasagna (one of about 3 on the menu). He was so busy eating, it wasn't easy to communicate. Splitting a salad, a bottle of wine and a dessert, our meal was barely $50. How often can you find that in L.A.? We will definitely be back to work our way through all the great offerings. The best part was that we were treated as best clientele by everyone, and always with a smile. Pros: good solid fare, great pricing, fantastic service Cons: small wine list more

Great little gem. 9/23/2005

We decided to try out Marco's due to it being convienantly within walking distance of our new place. We ended up there during late-breakfast/early-lunch hours, so there were only two other parties there. The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful and the food was impressive. We decided on lunch due to the time, but cannot wait to go back to try their breakfast menu. If they can hold up their quality of service during peak hours, this can easily become a favorite. Pros: intimate setting, reasonably priced, ample parking Cons: limited patio seating more

Lots of Garlic!!!!!!!!! 10/3/2004

Had to try this place out because of the praise it received here on CitySearch. Good Italian food is tough to come by in this town, and Marco's lived up to its rating. Everything was loaded with garlic and absolutely delicious. I was especially impressed with their sauteed mushrooms in butter, white wine and garlic! My carryout was ready upon arrival, and everybody was so nice! I think I finally found a new favorite Italian spot! Pros: Inexpensive, Food, Service more

BEST ITALIAN IN L.A.! 8/19/2003

Marco's is by far the best Italian restaurant in L.A. Marco, Gyorgy and the rest of the staff all go out of their way to create a memorable dining experience. Italian favorites served with flair, everything a good value. Very friendly and unpretentious. Great outdoor patio, perfect for warm summer evenings. Bring all your friends! Pros: Value, Fresh, Homemade Food, Friendly Service more

Thanks Marco 8/17/2003

After a long day of driving with no air conditioning and getting heat stroke, I couldnt have picked a more welcoming and accomodating place than Marco's. I was sicker than a dog - and Marco along with the rest of his staff did everything in their power to make me feel better - from getting me water and hot tea, to filling rags with ice to put on my head, to driving my boyfriend around LA to find a place to fix my air conditioning. 2 hours later I was feeling better - boxed up my ceasar salad, and ate it in the car later! It was delicious. THanks Marco for all of your help. Without you I probably would have landed in the hospital. I rate Marco's a 10!! Pros: QUaint, Great food, Friendly staff more

excellent 8/16/2003

There are a few Italian restaurants that I can think of where the food and the service were both top notch. Yet this place has both without having an expensive price tag to go along with it. What a wonderful place to just go dine at or the take a date to. If you haven't been to Marco's yet, make sure you check it out. You will not be disappointed! Pros: Excellent service, Delicious food, Modest price more

Impeccable Service 7/8/2003

I went to Marco's for the first time a few weeks ago and fell in love with it. Located in a small strip mall, one would not expect the high level of friendly service and delicious food. The waiter was so sweet, he gave me a glass of wine from his personal collection. BTW, you can bring your own wine and they won't charge you! The food was wonderful; fresh, flavorful and served piping hot. This is one of my new favorite restaurants. Pros: Hospitality/service, Delicious food, Amazing prices more

wow - yum! 6/22/2003

marco's is a neighborhood joint that looks non descript in a small strip mall. from the moment we sat down, to the moment we finished our meal, we were impressed. the food was delicious, prices were very affordable, but most importantly, the service from everyone was impeccable. they were friendly, curteous, knowledgable, and didn't make a bunch of noise when clearing the table (my pet peeve). we will definitely be back on a regular basis. Pros: great service, tasty food, good value more

if I'm in the neighborhood... 3/31/2003

Marco's doesn't serve the best Italian food I've ever had, but it's a solid neighborhood place to eat. The prices are reasonable, the service is good, and the food is decent. The complimentary focaccia + bruchetta topping is a definite plus. I also thought my penne arrabiata was pretty good. Nothing fancy, but a decent, satisfying bowl of pasta. My friends weren't impressed with the spinach lasagna and the pizza they got, but they weren't bad--just not exceptional. Pros: reasonable prices, focaccia Cons: bland pizza more

Great lunch specials! 12/13/2002

I have a very short lunch break. I have lunch at Marco's about 4 times a week. Their $5.25 lunch specials include a large slice of pepperoni pizza, a Caesar salad a fountain drink (refillable). With the $7.95 specials you get a soup or a salad, a main course of 7 choices (including Spaghetti with meatballs or a lasagana) and the focaccia bread and their fantastic bruschetta tomatoes. A full meal for $7.95. Where else can you find that? They have a great roast beef sandwich either with fries or salad for only $7.50. They have fried calamari, fried chicken tenders and you have to try the fried cheese ravioli (all for $6.95). You can be done in 30 minutes the most. Pros: fast, cheap, free parking more

A definite winner 12/12/2002

I visited Marcos on my trip to West Hollywood last month. The place is nothing fancy, they dont use expensive table and silver ware and its only paper napkins, but its great food at very affordable prices. Its fast, the service is friendly and excellent. I had breakfast and dinner there. With Marcos breakfast, for $9.75 you get so much food, you cant even finish everything. The eggs, bacon sausage were all cooked right. The pancake was delicious, too. You cant beat this. Their thin crust pizza is absolutely fantastic, even for a New Yorker, like myself. I will go back when Im in LA again Pros: food, service Cons: can be crowded more

I love the breakfast at Marco's. 12/5/2002

The couple who gave them 4 must have had them on a bad day. I love the frittatas there. The chicken and asparagus and the salmon and spinach frittatas are killer. I yet have to find a place with better frittatas. My pancakes were great, too. Fluffy, tasty, looked good. Chcocolate chip pancakes with strawberry topping is fantastic. It's very reasonably priced and you don't have to wait in lines. I can't ask for more. Pros: affordable, free parking, no waiting in lines more

Your Home Away From Home 11/28/2002

When you cannot get to Rome by 8:00 pm, and there's no Italian relative at home to cook for you -- the next best thing is to drop in at Marco's. I say "drop in" because this cozy, friendly, food-festive restaurant will soon become a favorite hang-out -- and the "back-up" of choice when you don't want to risk a bad experience in a more expensive zip code. Where else can you walk out after 90 minutes and only 30 bucks for 2 -- without gambling in the desert? Pros: Top quality food, Inexpensive, Friendly Cons: The secret's out more

A neighborhood trattoria and pizzeria on Santa Monica Blvd

Owner Message
  • Marco and his beloved "mamma" opened a small trattoria in West Hollywood in 1993. With a lifelong passion of hospitality and a deep love of the food from her Italian birthplace, they created a neighborhood trattoria and pizzeria that spun over a decade of fabulous "home cooked" foods, wonderful loving friends and the culinary memories of an era long gone.
Now, 16 years later, a new "Marco's" is born but the philosophy is identical.
Create a neighborhood restaurant where: The energy is upbeat and without pretense. The food is wonderful and memorable & The prices are fair and value driven. Our menu and diverse wine list have been created to offer a vast variety of comfort food flavors spanning the culinary globe. Upscale in the quality of ingredients and presentations, yet centering on that original Italian restaurant started so many years ago ...

Editorial
  • In Short
Started by Franca "Mama" Capanni and her son Marco in 1993, this charming, homestyle Italian joint serves time-tested dishes with authentic recipes straight from the boot-shaped country. While its weathered green awnings and worn-out signage may unintentionally turn away new customers, the warm and welcoming waitstaff manage to step things up. Servers are attentive, slipping sizzling pizzas, topped with everything from chicken and shrimp to mushrooms and eggplant, onto shimmery glass tabletops. Other house specialties include the gooey, mozzarella-topped meatloaf and their hearty--and famous--helping of spaghetti and meatballs.
