Not so bad, but learning 5/1/2006

My wife and I visited on a Sunday night in April 2006, and we definitely enjoyed ourselves here. I would agree with the other reviewer, however, that the ownership change has definitely altered the quality of the place relative to what Citysearch thought it had been. My duck was pretty good, but it paled in comparison to the one I had the previous night at Mews, the other way on Commercial. I tried to order a different dish, but Martin House had run out, unfortunately. My wife's rabbit stir fry was fun, but tasted very basic. We had a great time with the wine, however. Champagne (PJ) and a half bottle of pinot later, and we were content. The surroundings are fun. Fireplaces are gas rather than wood, but they still provide ambience. Altogether, this is a good restaurant. Not the best in P'town, but not a huge disappointment. Pros: Atmosphere Cons: Unrefined menu, New ownership, Learning more

New Mgmt=Disaster 8/14/2005

Easily THE worst dining experience of my life and I eat out almost every nite in NYC. I've had many wonderful meals at the Martin House but this was a Disaster. The service was horrible including adding a 20% gratuity for a party of 4; waiting 40 minutes with an advance reservation; not havnig three known specialities available on a Saturday; waiting 2 hours after ordering because the "stove broke down." AVOID THE MARTIN HOUSE. more

  • The Scene
The polite, knowledgeable (but never condescending) waitstaff is as soothing as the historic setting they work in. The 18th-century Cape house faces the harbor, and evokes moments of old New England without trying too hard. For even more intimacy, request a table by the fireplace when you reserve.

    The Food

The global food movement is in fine form at the Martin House, where top-notch New England ingredients are fused with international techniques and flavors. Case in point: Plump, voluptuous Wellfleet oysters, set on the half shell with ponzu, pickled ginger and wasabi. Or the pheasant confit with dried cherries and roasted chestnuts--a remarkably successful combination of textures. The roast partridge wrapped in wild boar bacon is an exercise in richness under its gooseberry and chipotle glaze. In the decadence department, only the chocolate chestnut rum torte gives it a run for its money.
