Food is good, but the 2 hour wait for food is not. Consistently takes that long for delivery. Not worth it.

amazing event venue 12/15/2009

I recently had the pleasure of celebrating my daughter's bat mitzvah at Mantra Restaurant. It was a fabulous experience in every regard. The food was great, the price reasonable (w/no hidden fees or surprises at the end!), the setting both elegant and uber-hip, the staff extremely professional but no less warm and friendly. They went the extra mile when I forgot to bring Chanukah candles and a staff member rushed out to find a box. If I could add a 6th star to the rating I'd do it in a New York minute. Pros: food, staff, decore Cons: none that I found.... more

Good lunch special 7/30/2009

I often head there for lunch with my co-workers. The food is very decent, if somewhat limited in selection. Service is good, although I've had to ask servers to restock some of the dishes on a number of occasions (they constantly run out of watermelon, for instance). The designer chairs look good, but tend to flip backwards (be careful, when getting up). Must visit the bathroom (and take a peek at the old bank vault nearby). Pros: Great price for a lunch buffet, good service, bathroom Cons: Limited selection, odd furniture more

WOW 3/22/2009

WOW - This was my first time at Mantra. After buying a dinner for 6 at a fundraiser, I was excited to use it. We arrived on Saturday evening with a group of 6 and were seated promptly although the restaurant was full (we did have a reservation). The walk to our table was amazing - The place is absolutely Stunning. Great decor and restaurant music. Pros: FOOD- FOOD -SERVICE - FOOD - Cons: couldn't eat anymore more

Great new tapas menu 3/12/2009

I recently enjoyed a wonderful experience at Mantra restaurant, in the theatre district. They just came out with a new sharing plates (tapas) menu and everything was delicious. My boyfriend and I went in thinking we would get a couple of entrees, but instead ordered 8 sharing plates and got to try a little of everything. more

Valentine's Day disappointment 2/17/2009

After reading another review of Valentine's Day at Mantra, I wanted to share my similar experience. My husband and I were surprised that there was only a prix fix menu. After being sat, we waited a long time before a server came over - and he said ""Anyone check on you yet? No, well someone has to take you, I guess I will."" Boy, the Valentine love was certainly flowing. We ordered our meal and half way through we notice bread on other's tables (I guess there was sauce - but we never got this), so we flagged someone down. Also, we did not receive one of the courses, but it was very hard to get someone's attention so we let it go. Plus, the food was tepid and not great, so another course was not really missed. Dessert was awful. The creme brulee was an odd consistency and the cupcakes tasted old. Pros: Very lovely decor. Modern. Cons: Service was lousy, food was tepid and poorly prepared. more

Worst meal I have had in Boston especially for the price 2/15/2009

This dining experience was a complete disapointment. I have been to many of Boston's great resaurants and this is not one of them. I brought my girlfriend to Mantra for Valentine's day. To start the valet sign was hidden on on the opposite side of the street from the resaurant making it difficult to find. The menu was a prix fixe so I was unable to taste their traditional dishes but for the price the meal should have been outstanding. The waitress circled our table (literally) 4 times before coming back to take a drink order. After finally receiving our drinks we were given grilled flatbread with a chocolate rasberry dipping sauce. Unfortuantely the sause tasted like neither. I tried it many time trying to like it to no avail. My appetizer of prawns in a cracked pepper tomoatoe sauce was nice but my girfiends tomato soup was bland even with the hint of hot pepper. My filet was ordered medium rare and came out well done and the scalloped potatoes were raw and crunchy in the center. My girfriends roasted chicken was fine but her potatoes were raw also. This meal was a complete disaster. Even dessert was a dissapointment. We both ordered the chocolate and cardamom creme brule. It was more like a mousse rather than a custard and the brule was soggy and non exisient. There was no crunch to the caramelized sugar. The smokey flavor of the spice in the dish overpowered the sweetness of the chocolate taking away from the overall dessert experience. While all of this is going on they are breaking down tables to turn over to a night club before 10 pm! They couldn't wait????? It's Valentines day! I asked where they checked my coat three times and was pointed in a certain direction to the coat room which by now was covered and hidden with curtains for the club. The manager did adjust the bill for the miscooked food which was nice but I would have rathered paid full price for a great meal! Do not eat here - there are so many other better options. more

Not all together AND NOT WORTH IT! 1/11/2009

I was looking for a difference place to take out my husband for his birthday. We live in Boston and know of many great spots with terrific food. I wanted to try something new and what a disappointment Mantra was. The decor didn?t really had a theme, as the orange/salmon curtains where in place to hide stuff and the floor was very poorly cared for. The walls had left over tape from past events and the atmosphere was not as pleasant as described on their site. We were sited and the table wobbly for beginners and my husbanded was sited on the ?couch? where we first thought it would be super comfortable and intimate, but the upholstery was ripped and dirty. We requested to be moved, but we should had left. To compensate the food was ok, but nothing impressive, so we were not deeply regretting by the fact we decided to stay until the ?restaurant? was being taking apart, to turn into a club. Tables and chairs were being removed while we were still eating, drinking and talking. My husband and I thought it was rude and tried to ignore what was happening around us, until the waiter come to us saying that we need to move because they needed to remove our table. We then decided we were going to leave and not move. To top of our experience I was seating and waiting for my husband while he went to the restroom and I was asked to be moved again. HORRIBLE ATHMOSPHERE, OK FOOD AND RUDE MANNERS. We went to have desert at the Liberty Hotel and had a blast!!!! Pros: ok food Cons: terrible decor, ripped sits more

Editorial review from GrubHub 6/23/2008

Mango Basil Chicken pretty good, a bit too sweet. Salad wasn't fresh (some pieces starting to rot, was washed but not properly drained so overly wet ). Delivery took over 2 hours and was never notified by restaurant about delay. Disappointing lack of consistency and quality by this restaurant who in the past has been very good. Not sure I'll order from this place again. more

The rudest hostess you can come across 5/6/2008

I must admit I was a big fan of the food at Mantra and still am I am really surprised that they have still kept the hostess around after so many negative reviews. I personally had a bad experience with her when we reached 15 minutes late for our reservation, our table was given away and she spoke to us as if she was doing a favor by providing us with a table when it is available. Very unprofessional and I have now stopped going to Mantra after this recent experience. more

worst ""club"" EVER 2/8/2008

This place was unequivocally the worst time I have EVER had!!!! My friends and I were on their list so we got to skip the six mile long line... but then we got in and it was $15!! Ok I will pay that much money for a place that is worth it but not for this place. And then you HAVE to check your coat, and that line was a 15-20 minute wait and it was $5 for each coat. And they were at least 200 people above what the capacity should've been. It was not even a comfortable place to stand, FORGET dancing. My friends and I were pushed and shoved, had drinks spilled on us multiple times, and even when we attempted to forget about how mad we were someone would just trip all over you and remind you why you were mad to begin with. And each drink was at least $10 each. And the crowd was AWFUL. Like gross dudes all over you that don't know how to take the word no. Maybe its a nice restaurant but that's exactly what it is. It should never have been allowed to call itself a nightclub. Oh and there are THREE bathroom stalls for the whole place. And there is a downstairs lounge area, which might have dispersed he crowd a bit except they were playing the crappiest music ever down there so there was never more than like 10 people there at a time, and they were probably just trying to avoid the 20 minute wait at the upstairs bar for a drink. I don't even know what else to say this place should just be shut down. AWFUL- do NOT go there- save yourself a horrible night! And you'll never get a cab home either! Pros: NOTHING Cons: EVERYTHING more

Great on Fridays and Saturdays... Thursdays not so much. 11/16/2007

Saturday night is great for the college club scene. Friday is more of a mash up. I've been to both too many times to count. Its a great place to have your birthday party. more

worst restaurant week experience ever 8/8/2007

We went to Mantra for lunch during Boston's Restaurant week. Its a very cool atmosphere, and when we arrived, we thought it would be a fun place to come for drinks after work. There was also a buffet that seemed to be well stocked with tasty smelling indian style dishes. Pros: fun atmosphere- looks like a decent buffet Cons: wait staff, food more

Five star price, one star quality and customer service 6/22/2007

My boyfriend and I are a quite food lovers and I used to be a server in a five star restaurant in Boston for several years. I know what people expect from fine dining. Mantra is known to be the one of the finest restaurants worth trying in Boston.... Let me tell you! It was the worst food I've ever had in all the fine restaurants I have gone to so far. We ordered two appetizers, soft shell crab and seared scallops. The soft shell crab had way too much breading. I couldn't taste the crab at all. The scallop was overcooked so there was no juice in them which is crucial for the flavor of scallops. Sauce was too bland. Our entree was even more pathetic. The veal tenderloin that we ordered was too dry and again the sauce didn't bring out the flavor of the meat. The stuffed pork tenderloin had tastless stuffing that I wasn't able to tell what they were and the white asparagus on the side was so hard I had a hard time chewing. Then the service was as bad as you get in Chinatown. Our server didn't even know if the seasonal appetizer on the menu was available, didn't bring out the wine menu until we asked for it ( it was 15min after we were seated), got our drink order wrong, and then took away our entree even though I still had much food left in my plate. If we pay 20 something dollar for an appetizer and close to 40 for entree, we would definitely anticipate the food quality and service to be at a much higher level. But unfortunately their food quality and service didn't even deserve one star. I highly recommened to NOT waste your money at Matra and go elsewhere. You'll tahnk me for it. Pros: Ambiance was really nice. Very nicely decorated. Cons: Food, serivice, attention to detail, shall I go on? more

CONSISTENT FOOD & SERVICE 4/5/2007

I never bothered writing reviews, pessimistic that no one cares. But i had to about Mantra because of my recent experience (this Saturday) versus numerous awful experiences over the 2 year period that i frequented the establishment (Live around the corner). It seems that the club is still favored but now more controlled by a very protective gentlemen overseeing the dinning floor. No more breaking down of the surroundings while dinners are still eating and more of a restaurant atmosphere. Now i feel like i am having dinner in Miami or New York and still part of the scene. Great food and service. Too bad you can't reserve a dinner table past 10 pm. They only do early dinner on Friday and Saturday. But it's about time that Mantra discovered their true identity. Great Job... Pros: Great Atmosphere, Great Food, Great Service Cons: Early dinner only more

GROUNDBREAKING EXPERIENCE 3/29/2007

The whole experience from the beginning to the end of the evening was amazing. The staff was lively and made our stay the best that we had in Boston ever. We regret finding out about the space on our last day in this city but we will be back on our next trip and make our first stop. The french cuisine was a surprise but delicious (we were expecting Indian cuisine) . Chef Anupam came out and greeted us as we got the check and spoke a little about his cooking. We were treated like rock stars. The city was a bit cold but Mantra more than made up for it with it's staff and warm and welcoming decor. This place should be a MUST on everyone's restaurant list. And the host with the french accent brings a sexiness to the whole place. Pros: Beautiful Scene, Great food more
