Mani's 1/13/2009

Mani's is a great cafe for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Everything is real healthy...vegetarian and vegan plates are available and everything is whole wheat or multigran. Their breakfast plates and sandwiches are amazing. They also offer a great selection of tea, smoothies, and coffee drinks! more

avoid at all cost 10/8/2008

I will NEVER eat at Mani's again. I'm a vegan, and seek out places that accomodate my diet with enthusiasm and excitement. However, the first time I ate at Mani's they served me ""veggie bacon"" which my server promised me was vegan (I asked three times). At the end of the meal I was still suspicious enough to ask if I could see the packaging of the bacon product, as it just tasted too ""good"" to be vegan. Turned out it had both egg AND dairy in the ingredients, and I was sick for two days. Cons: horrible service, untrained staff more

delicious and healthy 8/18/2008

This food here is so delicious and made with the best quality, organic ingredients - its a great place to go to get something satisfying and unique that's still health conscious both in terms of calories and natural ingredients. Their wraps are especially good and their desserts are great because they don't make their stuff too rich or sugary. This is hands down my new favorite spot to eat out! Pros: delicious, healthy more

Worst Value for Breakfast....just terrible. 8/3/2008

For $10 i received two eggs....two miniscule turkey sausages (nothing homemade, nothing special) and...no joke....5 little pieces of potatos.....no bread....no fruit....no salad....and that was called something like ""Breakfast the way you want it""....something along those lines. When I realized I needed more food, I ordered some toast (olive bnread)....that costs $5. I never once felt like I was eating anything I couldn't have made at home in about 5 minutes and for about $4.....Worst value....nothing special about the food. more

worst burgers ever 6/12/2008

don't order a burger! or you will end up with something comparable to one from mcdonalds, at triple the price. it was embarrassing how dry and old the patty was, same applies to the bun. everything was blunt and tasteless, even the hot air french fries were just the same as the frozen ones. in & out is way above its league. Pros: location Cons: bad food more

Incompetent or Uninterested in Service, It?s Hard to Tell? 5/6/2008

I really wanted to love Mani's. As a mother who wants her kid to eat wholesome and organic food, I thought this would be my new favorite place for cakes and treats. I ordered a birthday cake, no problem the pastry chef was helpful and informative. However, when we went to pick it up at the time we specified, it took nearly 30 minutes to get it. It was hard to tell if the guy behind the counter was a complete moron or just didn't care one bit about the customer. He kept saying he was looking for a box... and then would come back with ""what were you here for again?"" URGH. So frustrating when you're trying to get to your son's birthday party. Anyway, the cake was ok. I've had better fruit sweetened cakes... so that coupled with the horrible customer service, I unfortunately won't be going back to Mani's. Pros: The right idea... Cons: Bad execution... more

If I'm Not an Actor, Can I Still Get Service? 3/6/2008

I've been here four times. Twice for late-dinner/snacks (after working late, trying to grab a healthy bite) and twice for breakfast. I had better luck at late night, although each time I ordered breakfast (I'm a breakfast guy). The first time, they had a delicious Watermelon juice, fresh-squeezed. I've always hoped they would bring it back, but it was seasonal and never returned. I usually get eggs, potatoes, pancakes, the like. Usually, it's pretty good, but sometimes the potatoes are dry and stale. It is truly overpriced, as other reviewers have already said. Last time we went, my girlfriend got justifiably irritated that we could not get service because the waitress was gloating over Jason Lee. She was so distracted by him, that she screwed up our bill and our credit card was never charged. Thanks Jason! Pros: Watermelon Juice (when available) Cons: Waitresses with eyes for Jason Lee more

Over Priced 1/22/2008

My fiance and I went to Mani's for the 1st time on Sunday. He ordered 'eggs the way you like it' which consists of 2 eggs and your choice of 2 other items. When he selected the veggie sausage (which looked exactly like the MorningStar sausage from the grocery store) the waitress told him it would be $2.00 extra. This was not written on the menu. So he got 2 scrambled eggs, 2 sausage patties, and some average ho-hum potatoes for $12....ridiculous! I ordered the $10 oatmeal, and while it came out in a HUGE bowl, it was nothing to write home about. It had some granola sprinkled on top with 2 strawberries and a half a banana. But $10, seriously! And no one can eat that much oatmeal. Offer half the amount for a third the price. We were very disappointed. $30 breakfast.....NOT WORTH IT. Nothing special at all. Pros: It's location on Fairfax with outdoor dining Cons: Extremely overpriced for average food more

Good Gluten Free Bakery & Restaurant 11/6/2007

Finally found a restaurant where I can enjoy gluten free baked goods! While they may have a decent bakery selection, their restaurant menu isn't as accomodating for people intolerant of wheat products. BUT I did have a fantastic Huevos Rancheros one afternoon. Fresh and cooked with healthy ingredients. I was VERY impressed. Coffee was delicious and the service was friendly. I see people complaining about the lack of taste in the bakery selections. That's what happens when you make a product without wheat, dairy, etc., for people allergic to those ingredients. Stop your whining! At least you can have a real donut, croissant, bread, etc. Pros: GLUTEN FREE baked goods! Cons: Restaurant menu lacks a lot of gluten free items more

Worst Cafe Ever 8/5/2007

This cafe has the worst service ever and the food doesn't make up for it either. The first time we went, we sat outside for 15 minutes with no server. We were finally fed up and decided to leave. The second time around, we got menus and sat inside, and finally got a server after 15 minutes (who by the way had no personality and seemed very incompetent). He took our order, but never returned with our drinks. We finally had to ask for our drinks after 10 minutes of waiting, and when he brought out drinks out, they were in to go cups and he mumbled a long explanation of why our drinks took so long, but neither my boyfriend nor I were able to comprehend what he was saying. And after another 20 minutes, I saw our food being placed on the counter, which sat for another 5 minutes before one of the cooks brought out the food. The food was decent, but my Caesar salad didn't have any croutons, which is a huge minus in my book. The server never came by once to check on us, and I had to go to the register to ask for refills on our drinks and ask for our check. One of the worst experiences. Pros: location Cons: service, food and everything else more

Wedding cake botched, horrible service 4/30/2007

I ordered my wedding cake from Mani's for my Dec. 2006 wedding. I met with a friendly and very helpful cake chef and thought everything was set. I went the night before the wedding to pick up my cake. Instead of the elegant and simple vanilla icing cake I had ordered, they gave me a cake with chocolate icing that was drowning in hideous white and brown chocolate shavings. The service people were so busy and inexperienced, they just went about their business after I told them it was the wrong cake. After a long while one of the workers offered a pathetic apology and an even more pathetic 50% discount. I shouldn't have paid a cent and at least one of the service people could have stopped running around and tried to figure out what could be done to remedy the situation-- but they didn't. Pros: healthy Cons: tasteless more

Great service, healthy food 9/5/2006

I have been to this place a few times and I love it. If I lived in L.A. I would eat there everyday. They are very dog-friendly, the establishment is clean, the food is amazingly good despite the fact that it is actually healthy and the staff is awesome. The only downside is that the place is kind of small, so it does not facilitate the crowds very well. We waited half an hour for breakfast one day, but it was well worth the wait. I hope this restaurant expands! I always make a special trip to Manis whenever I am in L.A. Pros: Great food, great staff, reasonable prices Cons: Facilities are a bit small for the amount of patrons that frequent this restaurant more

Big screw-up!!! 6/18/2006

I had read that this place had one of the best apple pies in L.A. My dad requested apple pie for Father's Day. I ordered the apple pie four days in advance. They requested my credit card number to hold the pie, and they asked me what time I would pick it up. Just to make sure it would be ready, I called the morning of Father's Day to confirm my pick up time between 12 and 1pm. I got there at 1pm, and the pie was not even made yet. I had ice cream in my car, it was a very hot day and I could not wait around. What a big screw-up!!! I'll never order dessert from this place again. more

Wow this place is terrible 6/6/2006

I gotta say -- it's all ""natural"" and whatever, but MAN do these ""desserts"" taste like crap. I'm sorry, they're all nice people and I appreciate what they're trying to do, but cookies made with burlap and berry juice just don't hit the spot like Nestle Tollhouse. Unless you're some kind of vegan-on-a-mission-to-eat-crappy-food type, stay away. more

Really good Vegetarian Chili! 5/8/2006

The Vegetarian Chili is really good here! They have a good Amandine Wrap as well. The baked goods can be hit or miss. The bagels are the perfect texture...moist yet firm! Nice atmosphere. Good for a late night snack or Weekend brunch. Pros: good service, good food, healthy Cons: parking more

Delicious and healthy! 3/17/2005

This place was excellent. The salads were huge, very flavorful and really good. They come with fresh baked bread and the jalapeno cheddar bread is really good. We bought some cookies afterwards, all healthy and organic and they were amazing! definitely try the chocolate chip cookie!! Pros: Cookies, Healthy more

Incredible 3/15/2005

I went to Mani's for my first time today and had a great meal. There was no wait, the service was fast, and the lunch was terrific. I ordered the cobb salad and can't wait to go back to try other things on the menu, including the breakfast menu. We also managed to order about 8 cookies to bring back to the office and they were a huge hit. For supposedly healthly cookies, these didn't at all seem boring or dry. more

Vegan Chocolate Dipped Cookies 9/20/2002

Yeah, if you're not interested in vegan or healthy desserts, screw the desserts. But for vegan fodder, they're really freakin' good. The chocolate dipped chocolate chip cookies rival the real thing. Desserts aside, the food's really good, well priced, good service and great coffee. I like the sidewalk dining as well. Pros: Vegan desserts, good food, nice decor Cons: Can get crowded more

Good Food Tastes Like Cardboard? 5/21/2002

Mani's staff is really nice. For a popular coffee shop/bakery, they are surprisingly human. The location is a little cramped to sit in and there is only street parking. Dogs and eating disorders are de rigiuer if you sit outside. I was underhwelmed by their baked goods. Mani's tries very hard not to make pastries or cake with with sugar, butter, or other fat. Instead, they bran it up and use lots of fruit juce or fruit. Wheat is not allowed in the door. Anyway, their treats taste dry and bland. Most of the salads, sandwiches, and cooked items are really good and tasty (plus about as healthy as you'd expect.) more
