Rudolph (on 4th & Colorado) is THE person to see for a great cut that lasts! Granted he's a little more than Ive ever spent on a haircut but he's worth EVERY penny. I usually have to come in right after work when Im tired, crabby, and look my worst but the staff is always so welcoming and friendly...even if its close to closing time. I am probley Avants longest running client. I started going to Roy Fredericks 20 yrs ago. When he retired from hair to focus on being an Aveda Educator and growing Avant, I was devestated. I gave another Avant stylist a try and have never looked back. Avant is Austins original Aveda salon. In 20 yrs I have seen many imitators but Avant is still the best and most original. It is easy to see why Avant has been chosen the ""Best Salon"" in Austin for the last five years by the Chronicle, as well as ""Best Spa"". Avant is one of the best salon experiences I have had. I am in town working on a film and had my hair destroyed by our stylist. I was not going to let anyone touch my hair till I got back to LA, but when would that be. One of our interns suggested Avant, I gave it a shot, and I feel human again. I went to Avant for 3 1/2 years. For the first year, I was satisified with my blonde highlights. Then my colorist left and I never got the same awesome highlights again. Like another woman stated in her review, the two other colorists I tried out apparently couldn't read the old notes of what color I used to get--my hair would turn out brassy blonde instead of the cooler blonde that I was used to. Every time I would go back I would state that I hated that brassy/copper color blonde and wanted the cooler blonde that I used to get--they would play with my hair and pretend that they were listening to me in the mirror...and then it would turn out brassy. For some reason, I kept going back, thinking that it would get better, but my hair color just turned into a mess. I don't understand why they even take notes about what color they used the last time because they don't seem to follow it. \r Also, over the years, the staff seemed to get snootier and snootier and made me feel like some kind of loser from the moment I walked in...come on people, this is Austin, not NYC! \r The staff can even be cold when you're setting up an apt. over the phone...usually you're on hold for at least 5 minutes and then they act like they don't even care that you're scheduling an apt. with them. \r Anyway, I hate to rant so much, but I've had it. The good news is, I finally tried out another Aveda salon in town that my friend has been recommending for years...and I was completely and totally satisfied. Yay! I had my bridal make up with Jackie from this salon. She was tremendously patient, helpful, and calming. I love the make up that she did for me. Plus, she is really nice. I had Jackie and her assistance did my entire wedding parties & mothers... and everyone was just so happy and looks very pretty. They really listened and tried to achieve the looks that you want. I recently spent close to $200 on a cut, color and products at Avant. I walked out the door with a fashionable, but unbecoming hair style. My hair had already been colored several times, and I think the colorist did his best, but the results weren't great. The stylist was in a big rush, totally ignored what I told her, cut my bangs exactly like I told her not to, and when I asked her to re-do them, did a sloppy job (when I got home I discovered a strand of bangs so long it hung down the middle of my face to the end of my nose). To top all this off, the cashier was rude and condescending when I paid my bill. For this amount of money, I'm going elsewhere. Pros: attractive atmosphere Cons: price, staff attitude more

I had been searching for a salon for months - much research lead me to Avant. Brandon was my colorist - he is just fantastic. I have had many, many compliments on my color from Brandon. For our three year anniversary my husband gave me an Avant gift card for a day of beauty at Avant spa. Everybody was so friendly! The spa area was very relaxing and welcoming. Sara gave me the best facial ever and the body treatment with Melissa was fantastic. I spent half of my day there and it was a real get away. I love my husband even more. I came back there again ang got my hair colored with Robert - he is very talentedand and professional. We had a very thourough consultation and the result was outstanding. Avant Spa is heaven. I just went in with a gift card I had gotten at Christmas-why did I wait so long? I got a facial and brazilian bikini from Jaime and a haircut from Jen Marie--fabulous! I just received the best massage ever! I've gone to several of the top spas in Austin and have never received such a relaxing treatment. The spa is much bigger than it appears on the outside and the treatment rooms are far removed from the busy salon atmosphere. The massage therapist really concentrated on my shoulders and upper back as requested, and I felt wonderful afterwards. I highly recommend their services! more

I have given Avant several attempts. First time my mother and I went for a 1 hour facial. My mother received 45 minutes of her facial and that was it. My lady cleaned my pores with Qtips (no joke!!). I actually had breakouts from my facial. Second time I tried to schedule a brazilian wax. Tried calling the downtown and central location 3x each and no answer. Tried the northwest location and the manager was extremely rude and condescending. There are plenty of spas & salons that want your business and that will pay attn to you! I have seen JAIME MILLER at Avant Spa for brows several times, and they always turn out AMAZING, but I just saw her for my first brazilian bikini ever. What an experience! I thought this would be torture, boy was I wrong. And to think I've been shaving all these years. She made me feel very comfortable, did not hurt me and was quick and very thorough. I would reccommend this to all ladies----once you get waxed, you'll never go back---to shaving that is. Love Jaime, love Avant! Try it. Pros: friendly staff, good location more

It's always difficult finding a new place to get a hair cut and color when you move. I tried this salon three different times (hoping each time it would improve). The first time, the stylist cut my hair very short and she styled it in a way I repeatedly asked her not to. The third time, the colorist changed my color....darkened it significantly; afterwards I sat on the couch waiting for my haircut for so long that my hair actually dried. The front desk staff fail to understand that most people don't want to spend 3-4 hours getting a hair cut and color, and cannot seem to schedule a back to back appointment without explicit instructions. In my opinion, if a salon is going to consider itself 'upscale,' it should treat their customers in a befitting manner. My suggestion is, don't bother. I received a massage today from Melissa Mizner. She did a wonderful job, and I thought someone should know. This was my first time at Avant (the massage was a gift), and she definitely left a good impression. Generally I gravitate toward smaller, more personal salons or spas, but Melissa made me feel so comfortable that it was just as good as being in a more intimate setting. The young women at the front desk were also extremely friendly and welcoming. Overall it was a good experience, and I would definitely request Melissa again, as well as recommend her to others. I went to Avant downtown for a touchup for my light blonde highlights. Instead of light blonde, which I specifcally asked for, the ""colorist"" told me my hair was too light and proceeded to give me dark blonde, brassy color, not much lighter than my own light brown. Not a good look with my fair, cool complexion. I went back to my old colorist for color correction. Now, my hair is in the worst shape ever because a colorist did what she wanted and not what I asked for. The lesson learned - its not where you go but who does your hair! I've had many services at Avant. Color, cut, massage, pedicure, waxing. The waxing is the only service I have ever been pleased with. I recently received hightlights, a $150 later, I walked out of there with roots. I know the colorist isn't supposed to go all the way to the scalp but this was three quarters of an inch away.
