Good country style cookin' 1/17/2007

If some good down home country cooking is what your looking for then you have got to give this place a visit. Just make sure you bring a good appetite or you'll be asking for a take home box. If you haven't had the chicken fried steak here you don't know what your missing. The chicken fried chicken is almost as good too. If you happen in on Friday make sure you try the breaded catfish. If you have room make sure to try a slice of pie. I've been to both the Lewisville and Harry Hines locations and both are equally good. The Harry Hines location gets extremely busy during lunch so if you have a large party to seat be prepared to wait. The prices are very reasonable. You will average under $10 per person. more

Mama's Daughter's Diner 4/3/2006

Located at Old Orchard and Main Street, Mama's Daughter's Diner is like going to Grandma's for dinner. You get great old-fashioned cholesterol-laden, artery clogging, cooking, served by no-nonsense waitresses who call you 'hon' and 'sweetie'. Meatloaf, chicken & dumplings, salmon croquettes, chicken fried steak.... All the old home favorites are here. Accompanied by the traditional sides - mashed potatoes & gravy, macaroni & cheese, turnip greens, okra, corn. Start off with huge yeast rolls and corn bread. And finish off - if you have room - with cobbler or pie. It's worth going just for the peach cobbler. Served with Bluebell vanilla, of course. You can't eat like this every day, but MAN, it's worth it once in a while. Going home never tasted this good. more

Great Salads and Good Local Place to Hangout 7/14/2005

Mama's Daughters is one of those places where everyone eats there because it used to be the only game in town, so to speak. It has such a long history that legend says it was built by Stephen F. Austin himself, but that is legend, mind you. If the name says "Flow" from that old 80's hit show, Mel's Place to you, well, you aren't too far off. The salads are the only reason I ever stop by. You are served huge portions for a fairly low price. The other stuff, sandwiches and breakfast, I don't touch. There are too many other superior places closer to my house that keep me from getting too adventurous Plus, I've heard from ex-coworkers that if you've had the salad, you've had the best at this restaurant. I did, however, tried their chicken fried steak waaaaaay back in the day (10+ years ago). It was average. It didn't offend me, but when people say the words chicken fried steak I think of other establishments before I think of MDD. I recommend the Cobb salad. Like I mentioned, huge portions, fresh ingredients, and the ranch is good. It's a down home kind of place so expect that sort of decor. Nothing too spectacular, but if you are in the mood for a good salad close to home, try 'em out. more
