i have traveled all over the country and i stop for indian food where ever i can find it. I have worked for two different Indian restaurants and have learned the tricks and secrets of the art of curry making so i can tell when i am handed lumpy leftovers. This place takes bold flavor to a new level with the fresh healthy ingredients and perfect tongue tinging combination of spicy tangy and even subtly sweet sauces. The mint chutney alone was a testament to the chef's attention to detail. If you want a dining experience that feels more like a passionate love affair than a meal give malabar a try. From my house in richmond i have to drive past 4 other indian restaurants without stopping to get there and it is worth it every time Pros: fresh ingredients, new twists to classic recipes Cons: only drawback was i couldnt keep on eating forever more

Best Indian Restaurant in Town 6/21/2008

The nicest owners/excellent flavors/not greasy/pleasant atmosphere and getting busier everytime we go. The service is sketchy sometimes but never ever rude or unpleasant - just overwhelmed by unexpected volume some nights. Even my children have grown to love the food and look forward to our visits. Heard the lunch buffet is fabulous but haven't tried it. Hurray for the non-chain! more

Great Indian Food. 2/2/2007

Wonderful place to eat. It's not usually very busy, so it's usually quiet and cozy. I've had alot of Indian food in alot of different places and this place definitely ranks close to the top of my list. The service is pretty good, although everyone there doesn't speak English. Desert isn't their strong point. Make sure to try the Naan! Pros: Cozy, Quiet, Great Food Cons: Service is a little slow and not everyone speaks English more

South Indian or Norht Indian? 8/26/2005

The place is decent in looks. Seems relatively new. But I was not impressed by the food or the service. I am not even sure it is south Indian or north Indian. All the dishes had similar flavors. There was not much difference. There was this strange pungent smell in the restuarant that overpowered everything. I would most likely not go there any time soon. Pros: New looks, clean, cozy Cons: food, smell, drag more

A different Indian Restaurant from the usual 8/8/2005

Indian restaurants (I have seen so far) all across USA maintain an amazing consistancy - Same bland tasteless food and smileless service. Malabar IS DIFFERENT from the rest. They have a unique menu with a mix of southern, konkan and north indian cusines, which will truly challenge your taste buds with a right mix of everything and most importantly they serve all customers with a smile. Isn't that wonderful for a change. Great place to host parties up to 50 people or to take food out for parties and gettogathers. more
