Dining at it's best 7/3/2010

My sister and brother-in-law took me here for dinner with her son, daughter-in-law and the two grandchildren, they loved the service including me, not too pushy. I ordered the pork chops, and the kids whatever they ordered said it was the best. Their menu will please any fussy eater which was me and the grandkids. And their desserts are to die for - make sure to leave some room for those yummy desserts. Pros: Warm Elegance more

Eh. 10/14/2009

We went out for my girlfriend's birthday. The place was half-full, but the service was pretty slow. It may have been because the game one of the ALDS was on, but there was no music in the place. We were seated near the bar and there were two middle aged guys there talking loudly about what was wrong with social security and how lawyers were to blame for all society's ills. My girlfriend and I are lawyers. That's just a funny coincidence, but there should have been some music on. The food was expensive for the quality. My hanger steak was tough, even for that cut, even though I ordered it medium rare. The cake served with homemade coffee ice cream, which has to be ordered with your meal, was superb. That cake alone was worth going to this place, but have dinner somewhere else. Pros: Phenomenal Dessert Cons: Everything else was mediocre. more

TERRIBLE 9/21/2009

I used this restaurant for an event. I've always been meaning to try them because they have a nice looking exterior and have been around for a while, but just never did. Some people I know have been there and said it was good (not rave reivews I guess). Anyway, I used them for this event because, well, they were available and my first choices were not, and figured, I'm sure it will be good enough. I was so extremely disappointed I can't even get over it. And this isn't a new thing for me, I've done tons of large family and friends events over the years and have been pleased every time at other neighborhood restaurants -- this is the first time I've felt like this about a place -- these guys were BAD! Maybe they were once good and now are slipping and that explains why I hadn't heard they were so bad before, but I wouldn't recommend them in a million years and would say ""stay far away"". Pros: attractive enough Cons: rude, overpriced for average food and awful service more

Very average, at best. 2/9/2009

It wasn't horrible but not great. Service was bad, the waiter spent most of the time chatting up the bartender or reading the newspaper. There was supposed to be a complimentary kids' meal on Sundays but apparently both adults had to order a full entree (not a sandwich or pizza) in order to get this (mind you this was not written anywhere). Fine. In the meantime, it took them 45 minutes to serve our daughter's pizza....not sure why since it was no big deal. My husband' $13 burger was worse than you could get at most diners. There are far better places in this neighborhood. We won't be returning. Pros: nice lighting Cons: bad service and value, average food more

Yummy comfort food 12/8/2007

This restaurant almost makes you think you've left New York. Tried dinner on a Friday night around 9:00pm, and got the impression that my fellow diners had all been there many times before. It has a real neigborhood-y feeling, with food that tastes like it was made by your grandma--the one who's a really awesome cook. The wine list is humble, but the selections are solid. The portions are large, so bring an appetite (we ordered an appetizer and regretted it once our ginormous entres arrived at the table). All in all, great food, in an understated atmosphere (i.e. not so hip). If you want to have dinner and be able to hear yourself speak, this is a great place to go. I highly recommend the ribs. Pros: Tasty food Cons: bland environment (office tiled ceiling) more

ninety-nine point fourty-four 11/14/2007

For our weekly 'date nite' (so cheesey, but it works people) I took my man to Magnolia. We arrived before the dinner rush, got a great table by the window. Beautiful rich color scheme, fantastic ambiance... Pros: price, location, ambiance Cons: none worth noting! :) more

Nice atmosphere 4/17/2007

Quality food and nice atmosphere. I went during Brooklyn restaurant weekand had a had time choosing which entree to have. I would recommend the scallop entree or the ribs. This place seems to have a great local following. It is cozy spot and the staff is nice. Pros: food, service more

hidden pearl 8/5/2006

Worst of Park Slope 4/18/2006

This place is horrid. The food is sub-par, the service is completely unprofessional and it is way too expensive. There are a hundred awesome restaurants in the Slope, so don't waste your evening here. I tried the price fix and te waiter looked offended when I requested the price fix menu. Moreover, food was a complete disappointment. It had no flavor, was poorly prepared and lacked any culinary vision. I tried the place again for the Monday night pizza and pint special and it was even worse. You had to sit at the bar for the special where the Bar tender did his best to ignore all clientel he had not previously met. The pizza was THE WORST I HAVE EVER HAD. It was a matzo cracker with cheese and sauce. It was so bad that it was offensive. Never go here. Pros: cute place Cons: Food is aweful, Service is aweful, Price is aweful more

don't overlook it 4/14/2006

Neighbourhood's little secret on 6th Ave. may be somtimes overlooked, but for those who haven't dined yet at Magnolia ,one word , run! The place has such delicious food you have to try it yourself to categorize it(they dry age their steaks on premises),the space is very cozy and filled witha warm glow, good service and value while still getting quality, they even have live music, and in a warm weather tables out front, once you sit down you'll never want to leave. This is where I go to relax and unwinde, even when they are packed on weekends the atmospher is less hectic than in most of the restaurants I have been to. Another plus -you could come with anyone, young or old, shy,or fun loving, the staff is friendly and accomodating.I could go on but I couldn't say enough. Do something nice for yourself, go to Magnolia. Pros: value, great food, cozy more

One of Park Slope's best hidden secrets 3/24/2006

Excellent food - brunch or dinner. Quiet, romantic atmosphere. Nice outdoor space. Friendly, prompt service. Pros: excellent food, quiet, outdoor space more

good neighbourhood restaurant 3/13/2006

Recently moved to park slope and have enjoyed several good meals at Magnolia. The prix fixe menu is extremly good value. The service was of a high standard and this restaurant will be seeing me more more

Go for the $20 prix fixe dinners 3/10/2006

Magnolia offers a three-course, $20 prix fixe dinner menu (everyday, I think, but it may be weekdays only). As one might expect, the fixed price menu is limited to chicken- and salmon-like dishes, so if you want something more special you'll have to pay a little more. But the restaurant, like the neighborhood, has a very comfortable feel, and the outdoor seating is a nice bonus. The portions are probably a little smaller than average, but they are perfectly adequate, and probably reflect the restaurant's emphasis on quality, not quantity. more

I Don't Understand the Bad Reviews 7/21/2005

We've had good experiences with Magnolia. It's a lovely restaurant with good food and a fantastic value $20 prix fixe menu. Our waiter was nice and professional (although the restaurant could use more than one waiter). I find Magnolia to be consistently good and everyone is very nice! more

Delicious 7/10/2005

The food in this place is as good as I've ever had in far more expensive restaurants. How do they do it? It's true that the service is a little spotty, but the overall ambiance is attractive and relaxing, and who cares about anything else after such a wonderful meal. Pros: Food, Restrooms, Music Cons: Wait more

No second chances here.... 6/11/2005

We went to Magnolia soon after moving to Brooklyn b/c it looked like it could be great. It failed at every level. We were kept waiting for a table for an hour even though there were always one or two empty. After being seated, we waited over 15 minutes to order our drinks. Dinner was unremarkable, the wine list was weak and the service was unattentive and slow. We ordered the recommended dessert ahead of time as they suggested but when it came time for it, the waiter had ""forgotten"" it. It's just too bad that the guy behind me who did not order it, but requested it after dinner, get it about the same time. For some reason, these guys are trying to impress all the wrong people. Pros: nice looking Cons: food, service, wine list more
