keep an open mind 1/23/2006

like most everyone else, I have spent many days at lutsen growing up in Mn. I have skied the Alps, Colorado, most of the U.P. and although there are many other places I would "rather" be skiing, Lutsen Does provide an opprtunity, albiet a small one, to get into some turns that you can't find in the twin cities. The value is not always good, however there are some good sales during the season if a person can be flexible in scheduling. The view is spectacular! Pros: Lake Superior view, Gun flint tavern, I'm not at work Cons: cost/value, snow conditions, too much run-out more

lutsen-eweh 10/14/2004

I'm a mn. native that has moved to Utah via Truckee Ca, Via Ketchem Id. If your options are limited and it's all you've got, It's a joint with chairs and your doing the deal rather than armchair sking/snowboarding. It's strongest in the catigory of Alpine Boarding (You know those people that race gates on directional boards with hard boots) ( The ICE is fast!) But for soft boots and my powerboard- Forget it! Same with the skis- get a pair of race sticks and let them carve you into the Great white ICE. Lots of Condo party-in/ Party-crashin due to the MN. nice factor provided your the outgoing type. Your money is better spent out west. ( No-DOUGHT! ) Pros: Avail-WOMEN, Carvin-ICE, SKI-IN?/SKI-OUT Cons: , BOOZE ACCES, LOCATION more

Top 10!? are you kidding me 10/14/2004

This survey is EXTREMELY inaccurate. Don't get me wrong, Lutsen is great for Minnesota skiing, but as a national top ten you have got to be kidding me! There are a number of other places in the rockies that weren't even mentioned on the suvey that are FAR excede Lutsen. Pros: view or lake superior Cons: , not great snow, small ski area more

Lutsen...NOTTA 10/14/2004

After living in the Midwest for a number of years, than fortunate enough to live in Montana & Wyoming. I am now living in the Southeast. There is "NO WAY" I recommend Lutsen (ice/cold) Hill; over "ANY MOUNTAIN OR MOUNTAIN RANGE (powder/comfortable)" out west. Plus the skiing in the Carolinas also is iiiccceee, be careful out there ;) Pros: Hot Totties, Warm Fireplace, Scandanavian Ladies Cons: , COLD, HILL more

Good for training 10/14/2004

Not worthy of a top 10 rank. Too far from the Twin Cities to make a day trip out of it. Not worthy of an extended stay and not inexpensive enough to be a mediocre alternative to the mountains. The conditions are bitter cold and the base is more ice than snow. But, if you can ski well on their ice you'll instantly ski like a pro when you get on the Colorado powder. Pros: Scenery Cons: , price, location more

VAIL OF THE MIDWEST 1/2/2003

BEING THAT I GREW UP SKIING LUTSEN THIS RESORT HAS MUCH TO OFFER FOR THE MIDWEST. IT HAS GOOD SNOW MAKING WHICH IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT FOR A RESORT THAT DOESN'T GET MUCH MORE THAT 80 INCHES OF SNOW A YEAR. THE NEW PAPA CHARLIES SERVES UP THE BEST LIVE ENTERTAINMENT NORTH OF THE TWIN CITIES AND MADISON. IT IS THE LARGEST AND THE HIGHEST IN THE MIDWEST AND AND HOME TO ONE OF THE BEST MOGUL RUNS IN THE NATION!! Pros: LAKE VIEW, PAPA CHARLIES, MOGULS Cons: MANAGEMENT, COST, LOCATION more

Best of the midwest, BUT... 11/17/2002

Yes, this is probably the best ski resort in the upper midwest. It is certainly much larger than, say, Afton or Welch in the Twin Cities area or Sundown near Dubuque. And it's the closest to mountain skiing you can get anywhere near the midwest. Problem is, it still isn't anywhere close to *actual* mountain skiing. A beginner or even lower-intermediate skier can stay happy here for a few days if they aren't too adventurous, but I like to have a little more fun. Unfortunately, there wasn't enough to keep me interested for more than about half a day. Pros: Location, Not Crowded, Lodging Cons: Small, Monotonous, Scenic more

R U KIDDING? 11/13/2002

How in the name of Fargo can you rate this place over Mammoth Mountain or Heavenly Valley? I've been skiing since I was 3 (most years 60+ days) all over the world. Please tell me that you are Kidding!!!!!!!!! Just because it is close does not a rating make. Just because a McDonalds is 3 blocks closer than Le Dome. It is not in the same class. Pros: cold, colder, coldest Cons: Cornfield, Hayfield, Pumkinpatch more

TOP TEN - NO WAY 11/11/2002

This is a homey little ski area, there is no way that it is a TOP TEN ski area, this blows the complete crediabilty of your web site and writers. Let's get real, no Mammoth Mountian, do you guys know what skiing is. Pros: cheese heads Cons: no veritcal, small # lifts, no way more

Great Potential 11/11/2002

The lay of the land allows Lutsen to be the best ski areas in Minnesota. Unfortunatley, Lutsen management does not take full advantage of this geological wonder. The antiquated lifts and layout of the runs make me go elsewhere! The unecessary gondola is a gimick and serves no runs! Go West! You'll find better accomidations, runs and value. I rate this 100th of the top 100 US Ski Areas. Pros: Land Potential, Sceanery Cons: Lifts, Run Layouts more

Bunny hills 11/11/2002

Time for a face lift on this terrible resort. The lifts a old and slow, the hills are as steep as ant hills. If you want to go skiing don't waste your time going here. The are plenty of other ski resorts in the good old U.S. more

Lutsen is the finest in the midwest 11/11/2002

As far as skiing in the midwest goes it doesn't get any better than Lutsen mountains! 84 runs on 4 hills right on the north shore of lake superior. They have runs from beginer to expert with a bunch of glade runs. The longest run is 2 miles and it is a calf burner, plus the only gondola in the midwest. I've taken a trip there for the past 3 years and will be going again this year. If u haven't been there I would check it out. I LOVE LUTSEN! more

THE WORST 10/27/2002

THIS PLACE STINKS!..SOME OF THE POOREST CONDITIONS...PERSONS AND SET UP THAT I HAVE ENCOUNTERED IN 25 YEARS OF SKIING..i OR MY FRIENDS WILL EVER GO BACK. IT IS FAR BETTER FOR US TO DRIVE ANOTHER 8 HOURS AND SKI IN COLORADO. AGAIN DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME! Pros: NOTHING Cons: LIFT LINES, GROOMING, APRES more

Editorial

  • The Scene
Lutsen offers four mountain peaks with 90 runs, plus rock-lined trails, awesome views, and it's right on Lake Superior at the edge of Superior National Forest. While it's no Colorado, Lutsen towers above its regional competitors, with slopes more than twice as high as anything you'll find within driving distance.

    The Slopes
Expert skiers head straight to Moose Mountain, finding a challenge on the Plunge or North Face Couloirs. Intermediate skiers usually hit Eagle Mountain, with its long, cruising runs. Eagle's also a big hit with snowboarders, who flock to Sawtooth Ridge for a 400-foot half-pipe and terrain park. The ski school is closest to Ullr Mountain's easygoing runs. Mystery Mountain has long, winding trails, great for beginners and intermediates. The gondola makes short work of getting from the base of Ullr to near the summit of Moose. The mountain is also serviced by one surface tow and seven double chairlifts.

    Vital Stats
    Vertical drop: 986 feet
    Base elevation: 702 feet
    Top elevation: 1,688 feet
Lifts: Nine, tow rope for Bunny Hill
    Skiable acres: 1,000
    Beginner terrain: 18 percent
    Intermediate terrain: 47 percent
    Advanced terrain: 35 percent
Snowboarding: No park or separate runs, but snowboarding is allowed on all ski runs
