disgusting 7/31/2009

i went here with my dad tonight because it was right down the street and neither of us had tried it. walking in we stood there at the front podium for about ten minutes before anyone aknowledged we were even there. when we were taken back she asked if we wanted a booth or table and i said booth and she sat us at a table anyway. i ordered the egg flower soup and #2 combo. the soup was digusting and didn't even come with crackers. The egg roll was not good at all either. just tasted like a mini omelete deep fried, there was maybe 2 pieces of lettuce in it. The almond chicken gravey was probably the grossest i've ever had, it tasted microwaved. the pork fried rice tasted old and crunchy. i guess the chicken chow main was ok. it was the only thing i ate. the chairs were odd, and all the other customers were def over 80. The whole time I kept commenting how I wouldn't come back here. I didn't even take my leftovers home. Pros: the waitress refilled my water every time i took a sip Cons: food, atmosphere more

Great priced lunches 9/24/2008

Great Happy Hour 9/24/2008

A group of my friends came into Louie's to celebrate our buddies birthday. It was to be our first stop of many planned. When we got there we saw the happy hour menu and special drinks of the day. We ended up staying there in the lounge for the entire night. The bartender and waitress were awesome. They went out of their way to make sure we had everything we wanted. That is not something you find in restaurants and bars any more. The kicker for the evening is they had a psychic doing readings for who ever wanted one. It was a blast. If your looking for a place with a great staff and great food Louie's is the place for you. more

Awesome food and staff 9/24/2008

I took my family for dinner the other night. It was my sons birthday. I was impressed with the pleasant staff and the size of the restaurant. Our waitress was wonderful. The food was fabulous. At the end of diiner our waitress went out of her way and presented my son with a happy birthday sundae. I happened to find the lounge on my way to the rest room. It looks so inviting. There is a fireplace for those cold days and I saw their happy hour is half price appetizers. It had at least 10 items to chose from. Over all it was a great experience. We will be coming back for that happy hour for sure. Pros: Friendly staff and great happy hour Cons: Bathroom is downstairs more

Avoid unless you have had your taste buds removed 7/21/2008

This is one of the worst chinese restaurants I have ever been to. The food was completely bland and flavorless, and no insult to the older set, but that's who was being seen there and perhaps they like their dishes that way. The gyozas were the only redeeming feature, and only because of the nicely balanced and spicy sauce provided. The 1970s decor has not been updated since then and the low lighting (probably designed to keep you from seeing the state of the decor) is depressing. There is much better to be had, although not in that area. Pros: Parking, service Cons: ambience, food, value more

I paid full price for tainted food... 12/31/2007

Nastiest meal consumed in a restaurant. This place is down the street from my house, so we thought we'd give it a try for lunch. There was a sign posted in the entry way of the restaurant stating it had received points as a 'neighborhood favorite' or something of the like. The worst thing about this place was that I found garbage in my food! An old and obviously very cooked twisty tie (the paper covered metal type) was in my chow mein. When the wait staff was notified he actually didn't say anything, but took the twist tie away, and still charged me for the dish. The rice was cold in the middle, it tasted like it was microwaved leftovers from the night before. The chow mein was very clearly made from over cooked top ramen noodles and lacked any type of flavor. The rest of the items were okay at best, and only because they did not appear to have been reheated and did not contain garbage. The ambiance was terrible as they had 'Jingle Bells' playing repeatedly. Not different versions of the song, but the same track looped over and over again. I would never ever in a million years recommend anyone to eat at this restaurant. EVER. Pros: None at all Cons: Nastiest meal I've eaten in a decade. Tainted food. more

Kids love Orange Chicken 5/2/2007

We have been here a few times with our kids (10 &12) they love to look at all the nic nacs and the tall booths keep the noise level down. The staff are always pleasant and the food is reliably good. We're not super adventurous, my son is downright predictable in his choices. Our favorites are the hum bow, bbq pork, egg flower soup, orange chicken, pot-stickers, and chow mein dishes. Sometimes food can be a little slow, but on a busy night with lots of families in the place that's what I would expect. They also have a small banquet room for parties. Pros: free parking Cons: bathroom could be updated more

Good Hot & Sour Soup, that's about it.... 3/22/2007

Well, the service was very good, and the tea was hot and strong. I work 3 blocks from this place and always avoided it. Any place without windows is extremely suspicious to me! But I have a cold and only hot and sour soup would do. I ordered the prix fix lunch which was the soup, some weird bland dish with under cooked seafood (the prawns were RAW) and over salted green beans. Honestly, I couldn't even eat it. The atmosphere is drab, downright depressing, right down to the alcoholics sitting at the bar having martinis at 11:30 in the AM. With all the outstanding restaurants in this town, this is one you'll never have to go to. Pros: Good Hot & Sour Soup, excellent service Cons: Lousy food, odd patrons, bad ambience, no windows, too salty more

If you want great chinese food look somewhere else! 1/21/2007

For some reason, my review below was marked with an ""average"" after I saw it was already submitted and posted with a ""Not Recommended."" I'm simply reposting with the ""Not Recommended"" and if they had a ""Avoid like plutonium laced bear-poop"" rating, I would give it that.. Pros: Funky decor, pleasant waitstaff, easy access Cons: Horrible food. more

Chinese comfort food 7/14/2006

This is the Chinese food I remember from my childhood, and no matter how gourmet I may think I've become as an adult (Szechuan this, Haka that) this is the comfort food I often crave. I like the waitstaff here, and have had success asking them what they recommend. Nice takeout, too. Louie's is for when you just have to have a nice won ton soup and egg foo yung! Pros: big parking lot, good service, no waits Cons: Food is "old-fashioned" more

Stay with what you know . . . 12/21/2005

The dishes on this menu are either great or generic. There is no real middle ground. Things I recommend: Dry-Fried Cantonese Steak, Orange Beef, Hum Bows (as an appetizer), and maybe Chicken Fried Rice. Found the Bok Choy dish disappointing as it is all stalk and no leaf. I like the decor its like a 70s time warp. Service is cute lots of older ladies running around, generally very attentive. Ordering over the phone for p/u orders can be a hassle in terms of communication, but whatever. Parking is usually not a problem. Pros: Decor, Inexpensive, Parking Cons: some menu items more

User review by kristan515 10/16/2005

Our waitress was terrible. It took us like 30 minutes to get a Coke after we ordered it. Also the sweet and sour chicken was good but the chicken fried rice wasn't very good. The eggflower soup was the most bland I have ever tasted! We are not going back! Pros: Inexpensive, Good parking Cons: poor service more

Good Chinese food in Ballard 7/30/2005

My regular meal: seafood potstickers, BBQ hum bow, Shanghai Noodles with beef, and sweet and sour pork. I am never disappointed; the food is always good. I lived in Asia for a year and LOVED the food over there... I find Louies to be a good replica of SE Asian cuisine. I do have to say that I didn't enjoy the food in their combo meals. The food was unimpressive. So if you want a good meal (and you know a little bit about good Asian food) then don't order the combo meal. On the other hand, my boyfriend (who is far from adventuresome when eating (he leaves dim sum meals hungry)) really enjoys the combo meal. It's a safe meal for the granny's. My boyfriend does love the fried bananas and the fried apples for dessert. He orders a side of vanilla ice-cream and is in heaven. Pros: good food, relaxed atmosphere, Ballard Cons: moderately priced, some entrees bland more

Quality and consistancy 9/28/2004

Louie's is a Ballard favorite and has been for years. You can always count on excellent service and delightful dishes. It is a great place to take the family as well as a wonderful night out with a friend or a special someone. The lounge is large and friendly. The fireplace makes it even more inviting and romantic. They serve food until late and don't rush you out the door. If you are a single female in the area it is a safe place to enjoy a drink and a pleasant conversation with the bartender or fellow barmates. Can you tell I love this place? Pros: inexpensive, friendly, great food more

This is the ""best""? 7/25/2003

No. It is very plain Chinese cuisine, bland taste, small portions, and a very limited menu. 3 meals later, (since this restaurant continues to receive high ratings I kept trying different dishes) I would not recommend this restaurant for anyone wishing a wide selection of well-flavored and medium-portioned cuisine. Cons: No taste, Small portions, Limited menu more
