The Best Stand in the Farmer's Market 2/15/2010

Don't bother checking out the dolled up version of Loteria Grill in Hollywood. The real deal is at the original location in the Farmer's Market at 3rd and Fairfax where the people watching is just as good as the potato tacos. Order the taco sampler which allows patrons to taste bite-sized versions of 12 different tacos on the menu (the cochinita pibil is a favorite), or opt for something more traditional, like a chicken mole burrito stuffed with fluffy rice and tender black beans. Either way, a trip to Loteria is not complete without a side order of plantains and an agua fresco. Just be sure to bring your wallet and patience - the quality Mexican fare does not come cheap, and there is always a line to order. Pros: Unique taco fillings, quality ingredients Cons: Expensive, long lines more

Appetitively DIsappointed 12/29/2009

When i first saw Loteria Grill it seemed like a good place to eat. Being the big eater i was i knew i had found the place to kill my hunger for the day or so i thought. Before anything else i am a healthy fit person who works out daily. My order was placed (Burrito de cochinita pibil, taco de carnitas, side order of rice and beans, and two fruit drinks), my tab comes to $21.05 for a single person. When it comes to good food price is not an issue for me. Once i receive my order i see the size of the taco kiddie size, burrito is barely an appetizer for me, the side order of rice and beans terrible (dry and tasteless respectably), and the drinks one of them 3/4 full only. As a native Mexican i was terribly disappointed, the food is not worth the time or wait. Until they chance the quality of food this is not a place to eat. I give it zero beans out five beans..... Del Taco fast food restaurant has better food and prices than Loteria Grill. By Aragon on 12/29/2009 more

Always a line for a reason! 4/11/2009

Firstly, I'd like to say to those who wrote bad reviews you are insane. Secondly, STOP COMPLAINING THAT IT IS EXPENSIVE! YOU ARE IN LA and at the GROVE nonetheless. Anyway, Loteria is bombbbbb! Best chicken nachos ever. Great tortilla soup. The tacos are amazing too. I've gone 10+ times and never tasted anything I didn't like. It has better Mexican food than some of the places I've eaten at in Mexico, and that's not a lie! Pros: Great food! Cons: Busy. more

Mexican food, but really real Mexican food. 2/12/2009

After reading the different reviews, and having been a steady customer since Loteria's opening, all I can say is, try this place once, and I bet you'll soon be back for more. Pros: real mexican cuisine Cons: not close enough to Anahein more

best mexican food in LA BY FAR! 1/19/2009

amazing huevos rancheros 7/27/2008

Great breakfast food. Tasty tacos. Everything is a little expensive ($10 for huevos rancheros is a little steep), but still worth it. The flavors are amazing. I just don't like waiting in (sometimes) long line and fighting the Farmers' Market crowd. Pros: everything is super tasty Cons: large weekend crowd at grove/farmers' market more

honestly the best 7/2/2008

I am a native of Mexico City, so I am always on the lookout for truly Mexico-City style tacos, which are smaller, usually come with onion and cilantro, and include non-processed, authentic tortillas (whiter corn). These tacos are one of the few I've found in LA that are truly Mexico City style, with less grease and all flavor. The mole and the chicharron tacos taste homemade, like the way my grandmother cooks. It's a no frills place, but good food is all you need in a real taco stand. The prices are ridiculous, esp. compared to what you pay for tacos like these in Mexico. Recommend getting the platters that come with tortillas. You'll get more food and can make your own tacos. The breakfasts are also great. Oh and keep in mind, burritos aren't truly Mexican. They are an American invention (I never even knew what a burrito was growing up until I came to the states). So while they sell them to please American palates, they are not the most authentic thing on this menu. This is a TACO stand. Come for the tacos. Get a burrito somewhere else. more

Not the best by a long shot 5/3/2008

Some tv special (I think it was Elmer Dills) claimed this place was one of three in Los Angeles to have the best tacos in town. Not! $3 for a taco that you literally will finish in two bites. The taste was not great, but okay. For the price, uh,uh. tHE average person will need at least six of these bite size taco's just to qualify as a meal. that's $18 for one person's taco's. Not a great value and not the best tacos. Much better for the price are Pepe's in Downey,Ca, Burritos El Chavo in Studio City,King Taco in Pasadena, and Burrito King in SilverLake. These are just a few quick stops for much better food. Poquito Mas and Las Fuentes in Reseda are also very good. Like one review mentioned, Farmers Market food stops are way overated. Somebody must be gettin paid. more

The absolute BEST authentic Mexican food ever! 2/11/2008

The Loteria Grill has the best Mexican food, hands-down. Here you will find traditional recipes without loads of cheddar cheese and refried beans. (The term ""Mexican food"" can be misleading -- real Mexican food isn't as greasy.) It's a great place to take family and friends. Pros: Tasty food at reasonably affordable rates; 10% discount for KCRW members Cons: Parking; often very crowded with long lines more

The BEST Mexican food in Los Angeles, maybe in the entire USA!!! 1/25/2008

Loteria Grill is awesome. I've lived in the southland my entire life and I've never come across Mexican food so tasty, so tantalizing to the tastebuds than this little spot at the 3rd Street Farmers' Market. Do not scoff or disagree until you've tried it. I've taken many a friend here, and all have been blown away by the fantastic food. Pros: The food. All of it. Cons: Getting to the Farmers' Market is a hike and parking stinks. BUT IT'S WORTH IT!!! more

The only authentic Mexican place in Southern California. 12/21/2007

I am from Mexico City, born and raised and I was very frustrated that I couldn't find any good Mexican places in Southern California. I tried literally everything from the Spanish Kitchen, through the taco trucks passing by East LA and the Valley, and all of them disappointed me terribly. Pros: Flavor, authenticity Cons: Parking more

I'd hardly call it Mexican. 10/26/2007

I'm in agreement with the last review. Although I am not as saavy as to the origins of dishes and such, I can safely say that on its best day, La Lotteria doesn't come close to even the smallest hole in the wall in the ""real L.A."" The farmers market is always highly overated and overpriced however, so I didn't have many expectations to begin with, just an apetite and not enough time to go elsewhere. Despite the fact that I was starving. Do the owners even realize that some of the ingredients they use are not even commonplace in Mexican food? Truly, I was disappointed and will NOT be eating there again. Just travel about 10 miles east of this place and 10 out of 10 of the restaurants you find will exceed the standards of this place for half the price. more

Great, Fresh Mexican Food 4/14/2007

The Farmer's Market offers so many delicious options, but 9 times out of 10, Loteria is always the top spot. The papas con rajas burrito provides an interesting mix of flavors and is very filling. As mentioned in other reviews, the watermelon aqua fresca is delicious and perfect for warm days. Even though Loteria does not offer margaritas, you can grab a beer from the 360 Bar directly behind it. The major downside to Loteria Grill is that it is highly addictive! Pros: Great food, relaxed atmosphere Cons: Long lines more

Best taquitos 11/13/2006

These are the juiciest most savory taquitos I have ever had, a little on the pricey side for mexican food though. The mole sauce is a little sweeter than Conquistidor but made very well. The nachos are delicious, the enchiladas and tamales are mouth watering. The chile verde sauce is excellent. The watermelon juice is fresh. I just wish that the prices were a little more fair. Pros: Great tasting food, leaves you full and satisfied Cons: Not a great value for the price more

sooooo yummy! 11/4/2006

I love their pollo en mole poblano sopes. It's absolutely delicious!!! And I can get full off of just one. I also think their plantains are the best I've ever had. Kinda soft, but with a perfectly caramalized edge. There's always a line to this place, but if you sit on the barstools, they'll take you're order without you having to wait in line. No sodas, but agua frescas. Yum! Horchata! Most likely the best place to eat at the Farmer's Market. Pros: great food Cons: long lines more

Consistently Great Tacos and Fabulous Watermelon Juice 11/1/2006

Despite our close proximity to Mexico, I find it very difficult to find good Mexican food in Los Angeles. Perhaps it's the fear of the use of lard in this town. Fortunately there are still places like Loteria Grill willing to defy ""healthy"" trends in order to provide yummy, greasy food. To be fair, I've only had their tacos and quesadillas but I found both to be flavorful, spicy and filling - not to mention cheap. The watermelon juice - so sweet and refreshing - was also a pleasant surprise. Too bad they aren't a formal restaurant with margaritas and stuff...that would push the rating higher. Pros: Great mexican food; watermelon juice Cons: No bar more

Sope con papas rajas 9/21/2006

Despite all of the other options at the Farmer's Market, I have to stop here for a sope every time I visit. more
