love good food long time 6/20/2011

have been eating there since it first open in its original location almost some 30 yrs ago, ain't many places can say they have been around that long, must be doing some right, sure it lacks in decor, but hell you ain't eatin the decor, anyway.i really enjoy the soups, makes me feel as if i am in hills again, the t-bones and pork chops are great ,ain't every seen them @ any other thia place.pad thia is good.fried chicken wings, angel hair noodles grrreat, the warm beef salad to die for. calamari excellent,I have tried other places and this place is pretty good.no artsy fartsy food here.i think the best part is that everything slows down when you get there,go to the lounge have cold beer or bloody mary, toast Dick . put your order in.its a small operation and some times it gets hectic, but don't go there to eat if you have an appointment in the next hour. they want you to come out set awhile and enjoy... i know you can't please everyone.. but they try too . if you haven't been there since Dick passed go out say hello to surin and malee. they will fix you up. more

Possibly the worst food I've experienced in 30 years 2/15/2011

My wife & I both had a day off from work & decided to spend that valuable time together dining on Thai food. We went to the web & looked for places that had numerous good reviews & were off the beaten track. Little Thailand seemed to fit the bill. We jumped in the car & headed out of town. As we pulled into the ""rustic"" dirt parking lot, we noticed that a couple letters were missing off the old rotting sign spelling something like ""_ittle _hailand"". We should have taken this as a warning. But being as hungry as we were, we headed in anyway. Ok..second warning sign. I've seen crack houses that looked cleaner. Again hunger won the argument & we sat down. The large family of local farmers next to us seemed to be enjoying their meal (I misread their silence as deep personal enjoyment of the food. I now believe they were in a state of shock realizing the size of their tab & the shameful lack of mere food mass) & I took that as a good sign. The short menu was a bit disconcerting, but occasionally a short menu can mean that the chef has nothing to prove & the 5 items are stunningly good. Holding this fantasy as a last hope, we ordered. The prices were as high as some of the upper-end places downtown & in no way fit the decor or condition of the rickety old shack. I could see that we were going to be at least $40 in to it before dessert. By now we were ravenous & the futile screams of my wallet trying to get the attention of my rational mind were being drowned out by the primitive need for sustenance. We started off with the stuffed chicken wings & to be honest they were surprisingly good. Ok, we thought, we can put our fears to rest. The Pad Thai arrived along with a green curry & some other dish that my mind has blocked from my memory for sanity's sake. The ridiculously tiny portions were over-salted to the max, over cooked & tasteless. There were 3 or 4 tiny dried-out shrimp in one dish that featured the item. The food reminded us of what a bored unskilled housewife might begrudgingly produce to merely earn her keep. No passion, no skill & no resemblance to any Thai food we've ever had in numerous cities around the world (including the food we had in Thailand itself). My wife was quite upset & gave the owner a piece of her mind (an extremely rare occurrence being Japanese & very polite) as I sadly paid the bill to the owner who obviously didn?t give a damn what we thought. We left bitterly disappointed, angry & still hungry. In short, you couldn't pay me to eat there again. If the rating system allowed for a 0.5, I would give it to Little Thailand just because we didn't get food-poisoning from the obvious lack of cleanliness I observed in the kitchen. When reading the glowing reviews this place has received, I realize that they must have been written by the locals who have never had any other international culinary experience other than an I-HOP Belgian waffle. I wouldn't recommend this dive to an enemy. more

Disappointed; not worth the drive 9/26/2009

We usually eat at Titaya's or Satay but decided to try this, for a change. We had vegetarian spring rolls, curry dish with potatoes and chicken, pad thai, and Some Tom w/ beef. The spring rolls were OK but nothing special--hard to mess up anything fresh fried. All the other dishes were extremely salty, even the pad thai which was truly surprising. The large horsefly on the wall next to the lamp with the hanging dust was not pleasant either. If the food was fabulous I wouldn't have minded the no frills ambiance, but the food was really a disappointment. Pros: Great spicy Bloody Mary; nice owner Cons: Food was way too salty more

Little Thailand 6/3/2008

A small place in the middle of not much. Service is OK, although not exceptional. Decor is about what you would expect based on the outside. The food,...fantastic!!! I've tried all of their daily specials and I've liked everyone! Pros: THE FOOD! Cons: Location, Ambiance, difficulty in locating the first time. more

Best Thai in the Austin area 3/11/2003

Amazing warm beef salad, larb, stuffed chicken wings & lemongrass soup. Wash it down with a cold Sing-Ha and you have the perfect meal. Be sure to visit to lounge in back after dinner. They treat you like family here. Don't let the location or lack of ambiance fool you- this place is a hidden gem. Pros: Incredible food, Inexpensive more
