Editorial review from Citysearch 11/20/2012

This is one of my favorite restaurants. Ive been going for years. The taste of the food, the decor and of course their complimentary delish pizzas and bread and cookies at the end of the meal really stand out as unique customer service. Its our family's birthday stop. I love their flavorful pasta dishes and ricotta cheese and strawberry cake. more

Amazing Service 5/4/2011

My wiffe and I go hear when we go to the movie at River Oaks - or when we want something like a nice pizza and a glass of wine in the bar. The good is consitently excellent in this place and it is amazing that a place so large has such attentive service. Full marks to the management and the chef - if you haven't been or have not been in a while- go back. You may find like my wife and I did that it has actually gotten better than we remembered. more

Generally good, but don't get the snapper OR THE SALMON 2/14/2011

We've been to La Griglia numerous times over the last 10 or more years. My husband invariably orders the boar chop and has always been pleased. I usually order the salmon which is almost always good, though the size varies. However, the last time we dined there I ordered the snapper, as I had eaten salmon the day before. BIG MISTAKE! They served it with portobello mushrooms and a heavy brown sauce, which worked fine for the mushrooms but was terrible on the fish. To make matters worse, the three puny asparagus spears were burned. Maybe that's why they put the fish on top of the asparagus instead of the other way around. All in all, a very poor entree. If you go, get the boar chop, the salmon or something else on the menu, but steer clear of the snapper! more

Moms Love La Griglia 4/13/2010

Here is a list why it's a treat to take mom to La Griglia which has been an original neighborhood favorite even though Landry's bought them out a few years ago-- Pros: Brandon is back; happy hour; more

Truly a disappointing experience! 10/11/2008

Our group of 8 people made a reservation for 7:30PM tonight(Saturday night) and arrived on time. We were told by the hostess that our table would be ready in 10 minutes. THIRTY minutes later, we were still not seated. It took us 3 times of going up to the desk to get seated. Then, it just got worse. We didn't get our menus until 10-20 minutes after we were seated. The WATERBOY brought us our bread basket. We waited 45 minutes just for an appetizer and one soup to come out, and we got our food 90 minutes after we sat down - only because we complained as a table several times and asked for the manager twice. Our waiter never came by to even ask how we were doing. Two tables around us ate an ENTIRE meal after being seated before us before we even got our food. The only waitstaff that checked on us all night was the waterboy - he kept our glasses full all night. To top it off, it only took the waiter TEN minutes to get us our check and clear our table after keeping us waiting all night. He never came to apologize. The only concession the manager made was giving us 4 slices of dessert(for EIGHT PEOPLE) to make up for our NINETY minute wait. Pros: Waterboy was efficient and caring, food was fresh when it came out Cons: terrible wait staff, extremely long wait more

Avoid 10/10/2008

This used to be one of my favorite restaurants. I do not know if they got a new cook or what. But the food is no longer good. They recently changed the menu and i asked for something off of the old menu and he said absolutely no problem. When we got our food, it was absolutely nothing like what it used to be. It was quite disgusting and the fish were so dry. Other people at our table said their food was cold and just okay. The waiters took awhile to come to our table. We probably didnt order our food until an hour after sitting there. Like I said, this used to be a favorite of mine. I dont know that I will go there again because I was so disappointed in the food that I received after expecting something that I loved. more

Another Landry's 6/24/2008

Don't read the reviews prior to 2007 because it was under different ownership then. Its now a clone of the Landry's chain and has come under the corporate boring sameness of all Tillman Fertitta's restaurants. I still like the bar however for its people watching and martinis. The last time we were there I was in the bar around 5 and asked for some bar snacks. I was informed the kitchen wasn't open til 5:30 so paid up and left! I would pass on eating in the dining room and stick to drinking the bar. Try Tony Mandola's Gulfcoast Kitchen down the street. Pros: Bar Cons: Corporate cloned food, value more

Best lunch and dinner spot in town. 7/8/2007

La Griglia is my restaurant of choice for lunch or dinner at any time. The General Manager, John Smaistrla, is usually around greeting guests and making sure everything is prepared well and delivered to the tables as ordered. If you don't see something on the menu, ask for it and chances are that it will be made exactly as you described. This is especially helpful for patrons who have special needs when ordering food. The wait staff is usually knowledgable and pleasant, but on rare occasions when there is a problem, it's usually because the place is so busy. Pros: Adequate parking or valet; great ambience, wonderful food. Cons: It can be tough to get in, even after all these years. more

Careless Service 10/30/2006

I was amazed by the lack of concern they showed. Five of us dined there a couple weeks ago. Three of us ordered the special which was described to us. One who had a shellfish allergy double checked with the waiter to see if it had shellfish, he said no. Our meal arrived we started eating only to discover that the special was loaded with SHRIMP. We called the waiter back, he said sorry, they hadn't put shrimp in the description given to waiters and said he would bring a new dish. Minutes later the dinner returned. IT WAS THE SAME PIECE OF FISH that he had just pulled the shrimp off. We knew this because the fish had already been cut into. We called him back, asked if he realized how severe shellfish allergies were. He said sorry again and what else did she want for dinner. She was finally able to get a meal that would not put her in the hospital but by that time the rest of us had finished our meals. The waiter offered a free dessert for her trouble. The check arrived and we were charged the full amount minus a dessert. We dine out a lot and can forgive a lot. This was just too much. The complete careless disregard for something as serious as a shellfish allergy, the obvious insincere apology for continually bringing the wrong dinner and then the lack of any attempt to compensate for all the trouble. My friend later called the corporate office to file a complaint. They apparently passed on her phone number to the waiter who was responsible for the problems, who then called her. Clearly the entrire organization is out of their minds. I will not be surprised to see legal repercussions against this company in the future if this is the way they treat their customers. more

ALERT...If you have a food allergy 10/15/2006

We explained in detail about a food allergy a member of our party had, and how severe it was. The waiter told us how he understood and actually discussed how important it was. We placed our orders and after we had started to eat we realized the dish was loaded with it. It was a terrible situation for us, and they treated the problem with a total lack of understanding and a quick dessert to move us on our way. Total poor management...they are into themselves and if you look for service............ dine elsewhere! more

One of my faves in town !!! 10/3/2006

The place is so pretty. The service is the best and very attentive. You get a basket of assortive breads. The best is the one which is a lot like cheese pizza, they also constantly fill the basket. They are very good on selecting wine. The food was sooooo good. The salads are so fresh and different, very good. The entrees are awesome. The chicken with the goat cheese mash potatos rocks. Then they have an awesome dessert charts with over five desserts. Huge servings all round. Very very very good. The service I have to mention again, is soooo good. You have so many people waiting on you. If you want a fabulous dinner and feel like a princess you must go here. Pros: bread basket, wine, entrees Cons: there are no drawbacks more

great for a business deal or a family event. 9/16/2006

I like this place although it feels ""chain-ey."" The food was great and the atmosphere fun and colorful. The service was fine and we had a nice little bottle of wine. The bar scene, where we started our evening, was a disaster, with desperate 40-something men and sun-bleached women trying their hardest to get someone- anyone- to go home with them that night. Kind of depressing, unless that's your scene. Ugh. Thank god I'm not single anymore! more

A fun place to celebrate! 9/8/2006

In my opinion, La Griglia is one of the best places for a celebration!! Although if you're not ok with loud restaurants, this is not the place for you. The atmosphere is fun and funky with their wild tile mosaics, bright wall murals and very cool glass light fixtures. You'll keep getting your bread basket refilled with their awesome pizza bread sticks...they're so addicting! The service is unpredictable and depends on the crowd. We either have three people attending to us at one time or end up waiting a bit too long for food to be served. We have never been disappointed by the entrees and the dessert cart is very impressive. Also, if ordering coffee, be sure to ask for the biscotti, which is a great way to end a great meal. Pros: Pizza bread sticks, atmosphere Cons: Loud...but fun! more

Bone In? 2/13/2006

I started the night with a round of champagne, my girlfriend and i were celebrating valentines one day early. Shortly after I order a bottle of SHRIAZ, the waiter comes back and presents me a bottle of champange? After returning with my correct bottle, he breaks the cork(oh by the way we still have no, water or menus). So now another waiter comes back over with a new bottle of wine(what do you know he brings me a cab). Now I came in to this place with high expectations, and now im dieing to leave(I would have if it were any other night). Cons: BAD SERVICE, BAD SERVICE, BAD SERVICE more

I'll be eating that tuna again 7/13/2005

This was my first time at La Griglia. We started with the snapper appetizer, which we both enjoyed. The waiter suggested the yellowtail tuna, so I ordered it, rare, and my wife ordered a lobster pasta dish. The tuna was OUTSTANDING. The flavor, a gingery balsalmic vinagrette taste, was perfect for a piece of tuna that was definitely sushi grade. The portion was large and the tomatoes and mushrooms were divine. My wife's lobster pasta lacked presentation, but she said she liked it. Normally she'll mention a really good dish, so I'm thinking that it was just above average. The bill was $68 for the two meals, appetizer and 2 drinks (sans tip - $80 with). I considered it a fair price. I don't believe the tuna was a fluke, because the waiter was so gung-ho that it was the best item. Pros: Tuna, Atmosphere, Staff Cons: A little loud, Parking more
