Where to go for coffee 10/23/2006

Where to go to grab a cup of coffee before taking a weekend stroll onto Walnut St. or sitting on a bench in Rittenhouse Square to read a book. I would highly suggest taking a quick diversion onto 19th St. and grabbing a cup of coffee from a cafe that is serious about coffee. There are no muffins or scones at La Colombe, but some chairs, a few tables and people standing in line for simple order of a café au lait, cappuccino or an Americano. The coffee here is so aromatic, and the coffee art truly shows how much of a real coffee house this place is. If you want to study or work on a paper, I would suggest going early and getting one of the tables near the window to be away from the people standing in line. The place can get a little noise. more

i won't go back 3/21/2006

Very crowded and not much turnover. Very hard to get a table because the hipsters love to sit and drink their coffee. And sit some more. The hot chocolate was very bitter and very gritty and overpriced for the tiny mug I got. I would not waste my time going there again. more

I want some coffee! 12/15/2005

If you enjoy a great cup of coffee just as I do then I know for a fact that you'll love La Colombe. The coffee that they serve is supreme. The cafe itself is also nice but it is the coffee that is most important here. I also adore the pastries that they sell, they are so good. I never give up a chance for coffee and pastry - never. The prices are similair to those of other "famous" or well known coffee shops in town. The service is quick but the servers are not the happiest bunch that I have come across. But the point is that they have such great coffee. more

Excellent, freshly roasted coffee 12/15/2005

The service is quick, but don't expect casual conversation with Baristas. This place is so popular that you can hardly find a place to sit. Unlike Starbucks, their strong and roasty coffee does not upset your stomach yet packs the same punch. When the weather is warm, I would get their frozen coffee. The sugar and cream is included, and the power isn't diluted. If you have a craving for iced coffee, this place, unlike many others, adds a shot of espresso to their iced coffees so you don't end up with watered-down coffee. I can't recommend a better place for a cup-o-joe. more

Simply the Best 12/10/2005

This is the BEST cup of coffee I've ever had in Philadelphia. Anywhere actually. The atmosphere is nice a cup of artisan coffee is very reasonable. I would love to make a habit of coming here every weekend, but Philadelphia parking is always tight. more

Philadelphia's Best Coffee 8/15/2005

La Colombe has a reputation for excellence where coffee is concerned. It is rumored that Martha Stewart drinks La Colombe coffee. The coffee shop in Center City is right next to Rittenhouse Square and has lower prices than most other establishments (regular coffee $1.25, iced coffee which includes a shot of espresso $2). It also is excellent coffee served in real pretty china glasses. But this is no fancy-pants establishment - the workers have a vaguely punk look and the clientele tends to favor "artistes" who come in looking bedraggled and sketch at the tables or local students with dog-earred philosophy books. Which may or may not suit you. The clientele also have a tendency to talk to you and the music (alternative sort) is played loud so it's not great for concentrated studying. more
