We now live in Franklin Village. We walk the dogs by La Poubelle daily, and tried it on a late night when we first moved to the neighborhood. That night the service was courteous...

Great Date Night & Great Food!!! 3/26/2007

I just had my date night with my wife at La Poubelle and we had a fantastic experience. When I called in to make the reservations I told them that it was a special night for my wife and I, they were so attentive and friendly on the phone. When we arrived, we were seated promptly and the staff and owner were their to greet us. Our waitress was attentive, knowledgeable and very friendly. She really knows her wines! Thanks! She recommended a few dishes (which we ordered) they were great, and they were mouth watering, simply wonderful. The owner and her gracious daughter sent over a fantastic Spanish brandy (on the house) that complimented our chocolate desssert. All in all we had a wonderful date night and we HIGHLY recommend this restaurant. We were told that weekends are very lively and reservations are a must, so if you are looking for more intimacy go during the week. We recommend the filet mignon and the coq au vin. Great place! Pros: Friendly & Knowledgeable Staff, Food, Ambiance Cons: None more

Best Service, Ambiance & food 3/26/2007

I Absolutely love this place. The food is great, the service is wonderful and it is lively!!! I eat at least twice a week at La Poubelle and have always had great food and service. The owners are the most caring people. They are friendly and welcoming and I always feel like I am at home their. Make reservations on weekends. Also a must have is the Coq au vin, just spectacular!!! more

The WORST service in Los Angeles but a good place to drink 3/26/2007

Drinking at this place is fun. Eating there is a NIGHTMARE! The food service at this place is terrible. Honestly, it is comical. If you eat past 9:00 on thurs, friday or the weekend... forget about it... unless you love people's butts touching the back of your head, and eating cold food, skip it. The food is 3/10. A good laugh is had because the owner is a dedicated french lady who is rude and loud. all in all, I would go for a drink... NEVER to eat! Pros: alcohol, smoking patio Cons: everything else more

Great Neighborhood Restaurant 2/17/2007

We LOVE this restaurant!!! We recently moved to this neighborhood and some friends highly recommended La Poubelle. What a fantastic restaurant. We have had great food, great service and have recently met the owner, who is this exceptionally beautiful and charming young women. A great piece of info on this place is that it has been owned by the same family for 40 years. The young women that we met is 2nd generation and she just loves her "living room" as she calls it and takes great pride in her work. This is not your typical Los Angeles restaurant with cookie cutter formulas. This place truely reminds us of a bustling French bistro somewhere in France. Pros: FOOD, AMBIANCE. SERVICE Cons: NONE more

Scream 4 2/9/2007

I will never return to this crazy place. I was there last week and the food was way below par- I had pasta and some salad that came AFTER the meal. The owner was totally degrading a waitress right in front of us, saying things I wouldn't want to repeat and a big party at the table next to us said that's how they always treat thier employees. It was like watching a train wreck and these people need to realize that so many of us in L.A work in customer service and despise seeing servers treated so horribly. After that, the owner poured into the bartender, screaming at the top of her lungs as the entire restaurant got quiet. It was obsurd. I have never seen anything like it. We and the party next to ours made a deal never to return there as we all have been in the service industry at one point-most people have. I hope the staff wakes up and leaves!!! How appropriate that La Poubelle means "The Trashcan", it's being run by Oscar the Grouch. Pros: non Cons: where should I start? more

Cute ambiance, delicious food 1/31/2007

I loved this cozy, little French bistro on Franklin Avenue. The artwork on the walls is amazing. I ate with a friend at the bar, and I found the bar staff to be superfriendly and helpful. It was a slow night, and I appreciated the quiet of the restaurant. The food was great--we had the hummus as an appetizer and split the "La Poubelle Pizza." Instead of valet parking, I recommend searching the cross streets for free street parking. Pros: food, ambiance Cons: parking more

Great Neighborhood Restaurant 1/24/2007

My friends and I have been gathering at La Poubelle every Sunday nite for the past year, and what a great year it has been. I accidentally found this restaurant about a year ago when my friends and I were looking for a place to gather, eat, drink and be merry. The staff has been exceptional with us from day one. The chef prepares special meals for us, and to top it all off on Sundays they have these fantastic wine deals. We highly recommend this fantastic neighborhood gem. more

GREAT BIRTHDAY!!! 12/29/2006

I had my birthday party at La Poubelle last nite and what a great celebration it was! The food, the service, the attention to detail -- I felt like I was Queen! I highly recommend this restaurant. We were a large group (18), and everything was really FANTASTIC!!! The chef made a special menu for our party and it was to die for. We started with a goat cheese croquette salad and I had the duck confit -- really AMAZING. For dessert we had a fresh berry cake -- which I will be dreaming about for months to come. All of my friends had a wonderful evening which really made my nite! I feel that you get great value and I am truely glad I found this place. Pros: accommodate large parties, food, service, value Cons: nothing more

Fantastic Food & Service!!!! 12/29/2006

I have been dining here for about 10 years and have always enjoyed the family owned aspect of this restaurant. It is fun, has great food and very friendly service. Our waitress recommended the wild salmon and the filet mignon, which was absolutely SUPERB!!! She also suggested our wine pairing -- WOW, she gets a 10 out of 10 from us. We finished off our meal by meeting the chef and having his white russsian creme brulee w/ a spanish brandy. It is nice to have a restaurant with character in a world of cookie cutter chain restaurants. Pros: FOOD, AMBIANCE. SERVICE Cons: none more

Worst Dining Experience Ever!!! 12/7/2006

In high spirits I went to La Poubelle to celebrate with my best girlfriends tonight. Little did I know I was going to leave extremely upset, angry and dissappointed. When we arrived we were ignored, even though the place was empty and we had a reservation. The waitress was rude to us on several occasions, our food was undercooked and bland. The wiatress described chicken breasts for one of the main dishes but we received thieghs that was neither marinated nor hot, the burger was pink inside even though it was ordered well done. The wine was horrible and after waiting an extremely long time for the waitress to come back we finally had to get up and go to the bar to ask her to come to our table. When she finally did she asked in an aggressive way "do you need something?" She was defensive about the wine and was rude when we asked for to exchange it. She was horrible and made this special night everything but. I wanted to leave the whole time and kept waiting for the evening to turn around instead it just got worse. I will never ever go back to La Boubelle. I would never recommend this place to anyone. more

Incredible food & Fun atmosphere 9/11/2006

Went with a group of co-workers and everyone had a fabulous time. It is a relaxing and enjoyable place to unwind! Pros: valet, food, atmosphere Cons: none more

BEST BIRTHDAY EVER 9/11/2006

I CELEBRATED MY LAST BIRTHDAY AT LA POUBELLE AND I MUST TELL YOU IT WAS THE BEST BIRTHDAY PARTY I'VE HAD TO DATE!!! THE SERVICE WAS EXCELLENT, OUR WAITRESS WAS TOLD IT WAS MY BIRTHDAY AND WENT OUT OF HER WAY TO SHOW US A GOOD TIME. THE FOOD WAS DELICIOUS THE MUSIC, THE VIBE, THE AMBIANCE WERE ALL TOO PERFECT!!! I WOULD SUGGEST TO RESERVE YOUR PARTY AT LA POUBELLE. THEY OBVIOUSLY KNOW HOW TO TAKE CARE OF LARGE PARTIES!!! Pros: SERVICE, CUTE WAITRESS AND WAITERS, CUTE BARTENDERS Cons: NONE THAT I CAN TELL more

GREAT FOOD & SERVICE 9/7/2006

Really fantastic restaurant with fabulous customer service, very attentive & friendly. We will surely make this a staple. The coq au vin was fantastic so was the filet mignon. Great small wine list with very reasonable prices. Pros: food, service, valet Cons: nothing more

BEST CREPES & WINE 9/7/2006

Great food, service, ambiance & value. What a treat this restaurant is. We happened to be walking on the franklin avenue strip and decided to try La Poubelle. My wife and I sat outside on the patio and ordered a fantastic bottle of wine. Little did we know that the already well priced bottle was actually half price!!! What a fatastic surprise. We will definitly make this our regular spot - great food, great service & value! Highly recommend this restaurant. Pros: food, ambience, service Cons: nothing more

Awful 8/4/2006

Having been once before, where the service was poor and the food barely passable, my girlfriend and I gave it a second chance. Maybe it was a one-off, we naively thought. We walked in and all the tables were free so, with no one to greet us and suggest otherwise, we sat ourselves down. The waitress came over and TOLD us to move. But why, I asked? "Because the table's for three people and there's only two of you." Impressed by her ability to count, I pleaded mercy citing the fact the place was empty. "It's company policy," was her bizarre retort. I said well I suppose we'll go elsewhere then, and she just flounced off in a huff. The whole scenario left my girlfriend and I in a state of shock. We're weren't mad, more just in disbelief as all the great restarants in L.A. have never treated us like that. Hmmm, maybe this place isn't quite in the same league. We went to the Italian place a couple of doors down and had a nice, uninterrupted meal. Go there instead. After finishing our dinner we left and had to walk past La Poo. Oh, looky what we have here...two people sat at the "three person" table. You gotta chuckle! The waitress- you know who you are- was a disgrace, a complete and utter joke. Pros: Ya joking, aren't yer? Cons: Service more

HORRIBLE, RUINED MY EVENING!! 7/27/2006

I went to La Poubelle for the first time with my girlfriends last night. Many of them had been there before and had never been too impressed but were never very disappointed after leaving. I must say, this was one of the worst evenings I have ever had. The service was horrible. One waiter for about 10 tables inside the restaurant. As we were seated we were told they would try to "find" some menu's for us. 25 min. later, the waiter returned again saying that he was trying to "find" us menu's. Our appetizers came out about 4 min. before the entree's and after we had finished our empty plates sat on the table for about 15 min. The owner (i believe) was one of the rudest people I have ever spoken to and this is probably the most UN accommodating restaurant in Los Angeles. I would NOT recommend anyone going there. more

Great ambience, food second 6/4/2006

This restaurant has the cute bar/french bistro air to it. But I wouldn't say the food is the main attraction. I would find it a good place to go if you are not to hungry but just want a good place to sit, drink and nibble on something. more

Give it a Go! 2/17/2006

Good french food, though a bit sceney. A lot of tapas style plates and an amazing hamburger. The service is subpar but something tells me they know this already. A fun place overall but don't come with high expectations in any area except food and ambiance. Previous reviewers must have had some bad experiences because all of mine have been great. Pros: Food, Scene Cons: Service more

Fabulous!!!! 10/8/2005

We love this restaurant! We have been dining here for over 10 years, and evey time we go we love it more. The filet mignon is hands down the best in the city, but don't forget to try the crepes. We love the staff and the family that owns this place. What a gem! Pros: food, atmosphere, service more

Won't be going back 8/3/2005

On my first trip to La Poubelle, I blamed the terrible service on the fact I had out of the way table in the corner. On my second (and last) trip to La Poubelle, where I sat in the middle of the dining room in full view, the service was even worse! Despite the fact that it took 40 minutes for 1 shrimp appetizer to appear, our waiter completely ignored our table and spent the entire evening chatting with other customers on the front patio! When finally able to flag him down to take our drink order, the order was never brought - though it did end up in the bill! The food - when you get it - is decent, but all in all I wouldn't recommend the trip, it's just not worth it. Cons: service, service, service more

  • In Short
Serious diners arrive early, before young, carefully disheveled Hollywood crowds clog the center aisle and vintage Michael Jackson hits the turntables. Loosely translated, La Poubelle means "trash bin," referring to the broad menu. Bistro dishes like pommes frites mingle with chicken marsala, shrimp scampi and farfalle. Escargot swims in garlic and butter, and salad chevre is a house favorite: baby greens topped with slices of Granny Smith apples, walnuts, vinaigrette and goat cheese.
