Service Par Excellence!!! 4/12/2005

I recently visited La Griglia with my girlfriend for her birthday and the whole staff was extremely accomadating. i had asked them to do some extra special things for me that day and they did not dissapoint me at all. Everyone was extremely attentive they had set everything up as I had asked and my girlfriend shed tears of joy at how well she was treated. The food was amazing espcially the tiramisu, ( the best I've had so far,) I can't wait to take my mother an granmother for mother's day. I have a new favorite family restaurant. Pros: great service, nice ambiance, good food Cons: a little noisy more

Unpleasant experience 12/13/2004

Shrimp and Crab ""Cheesecake"" - If you like heavy green souse on a top of cheesy seafood mix shaped like a cake this one is for you. Shrimp Bisque was too spicy and tastes like from the can. Grilled Scallops appetizer - this is two grilled jumbo scallops on a bed of polenta. Scallops were over cooked, dry and tasteless. Polenta was terrible and seems like was made day before and then heated in microwave. Grilled Squid - It is by far worth grilled squid we ever had! It was dry, tough to chew and my girlfriend actually asked me to cut her squid because it was so hard for a knife! Vegetables that came with it were saggy and tasteless. Cream Brule was not so bad, mostly presentation. And all this for $67.72! I dont think we will be back in La Griglia for a long time. more

It was by far the worst meal that I've had at a Houston restaurant ever. I ordered the Veal Paillard , it was over cooked and drenched in salt and pepper. The cook treated the veal like it was a rough cut of steak. The accompanying roasted potatoes I think were roasted the day before and left out to dry. The fried asparagus (yes fried) was undercooked and the coating was mushy. My dinner companion did not fare well either. Ordering one of the dinner specials that was described as, ""snapper topped with lump crabmeat on a bed of spinach"", arrived fried (yes fried snapper-actually deep fried not even pan fried) with the fins and bones. The coating was too thick and mushy as well, with a measly quarter size portion of spinach. And something that looked like a hush-puppy. Just not like La Griglia used to be! more

A huge fan 6/21/2003

Keep up the good work Brandon! Brandon Busch continues to lead one of the finest staffs in the city. Polished, friendly, attentive, and talented. (No, I am not his mother :) ) The food never fails to please. I appreciate the effort and I will continue to make this on of my most regular spots to dine, entertain, and recomend to friends. more

Obviously I'm in the minority 2/28/2003

...but, I think La Griglia (and all Tony's restaurants) is not worth a second visit. I've eaten there several times (at friends' suggestion) but recent visit was first in several years. Still the same: bad food; decent, not great service. I was there on a weeknight, seated promptly, wine list was good. Salads are mixed -- the best is the autumn salad with goat cheese, nuts, etc. The pastas are fair, but much better dishes can be found at MANY other restaurants that are far better. The worst appetizer sampled is the mussels -- tiny, old mussels, with no flavor. Several had broken shell mixed in with the mussel and some were so small that they were not worth fighting to get out of the shell. Pastas, fish and shellfish should be excellent in an Italian restaurant -- note here! Pros: fun wall murals Cons: appetizers, entrees, dessert more

Great Service & Food! 2/25/2003

Great food and service. The food is a little pricey but a splurge every now and then is okay, too. I love the hip decor. Beware: The wine list isn't too great....they've got alot of ""young"" wines"". more

What a restaurant! The service, the food, the atmosphere grade A. A little pricey, but worth it. The bread is awesome. more

Not Your Typical Italian 11/19/2002

Fun murals on the walls; unpretentious wait staff; the best bread basket and bellinis in town. La Griglia is often crowded, so I'd recommend a reservation, but the food is reliably good and worth the wait. Pros: Fun lively atmosphere, Fabulous bellinis Cons: Crowded more

worth a try 11/14/2002

I liked the fun murals -- drawings of dressed-up animals dining on a table with table legs of a human - drawings that you may see painted by a talented street artist on a NY building. Since I wasn't paying the bill, I did not know if we were overcharged like some other reviewers mentioned, but I wouldn't think so, and the waiters were friendly and attentive. Food was good, not memorable--hmmm...what was that appetizer I liked. more
