Best

The best atmosphere, the best (and largest) traditional margaritas and the best chicken mole, what more could you ask for?

Worst

This place has an interesting menu, but, I think it is somewhat overated. The service is slow, the restaurant isn't very roomy. Overall it was an average restaurant.

Never miss this one for evening atmosphere 3/14/2006

Great place to relax and people watch while waiting to be seated. If you are a patio person request outside seating. The firepit is great on a cool evening. Beautiful lighting at night. Can handle big parties with ease. The only gripe is the $10 price of having the group sing a requested song. This should be pointed out BEFORE they sing. Maybe put a sign on the tables. So I recommend just listening while they play for others. Otherwise, this is THE place. Pros: Great atmosphere, Good Margaritas Cons: $10 charge for song., Parking more

Great Food for a Great Price 2/24/2006

We took our daughter there for her birthday on January 1st and the food was excellent. The service and prices were great too. The scenery was totally awesome. We dined indoors but had a full view of the outdoor patio through large glass walls. We were entertained by birds bathing in the outdoor water fountains. The restaurant walls also had beautiful ""Old Mexico"" decor. Mariachis came over and serenaded our daughter and the night turned out to be a memorable night for our daughter. I highly recommend this restaurant to all those in San Antonio and in other cities. We are from Poteet, so the 45 mile drive was well worth it. Pros: Great Food, Very Romantic, Great Prices Cons: Need more locations more

I love it here! 1/27/2006

I began my love affair when I was introduced to this beautiful restaurant 17 years ago. The food is authentic - not like Tex/Mex most SA restaurants serve. The green enchiladas are the best in the city. The aguacate relleno is delicious as well; stuffed with some of the best shrimp salad I've ever tasted. Whatever the occasion, the margaritas are to die for. Make sure you don't have too many, I've never been able to walk a straight line after 3 of them! The wait staff is attentive and friendly. I have never had a bad experience here. We celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, and special events here as often as possible. This is definitely the best Mexican restaurant in the area. Pros: delicious food, excellent service, great drinks Cons: small parking lot, crowded more

A Patio Dream! 12/23/2005

I would definitely agree with previous reviews that the food here is average, at best. But, you cant go wrong with the overall experience if you vie for a patio seat. Combine the outdoor dining with friends and a sangria swirl margarita (or two) and youre set for a great time. It helps to have this restaurant in an off-the-beaten-path location so that there is not much road noise if you're dining outdoors. One food item to recommend: try a dish that includes a tostadita, a mini-tostada topped with refried beans, chorizo, guacamole, sour cream and white cheese. I've been coming here for years and have yet to visit without having a tostadita. Pros: Patio Dining Cons: Average Food more

A Wonderful Packaged Experience 8/1/2005

First off, the food is only average. Second, the service is just adequate. YET, La Fogata is put together in a way than it is greater than the sum of its parts. I rarely recommend a place that doesn't rate the best food and service. La Fogata is a perfectly packaged experience. I would describe it as a cozy oasis. The margaritas are very good. The patio is designed with many semi private spots. The best way to enjoy this place is to find one of these spots, orders margaritas and share appetizers and a dish or two with your group. There is nothing like this place. more

The Patio 7/25/2005

La Fogata has one of the best margaritas in town and the best patio. If you want to hang out on the patio and down a few drinks this is a great place. The food is average at best, but after a couple of margaritas the taste will not matter. more

Love the chicken mole!! 5/22/2005

The absolute best chicken mole and the tacos nortenos were memorable! A ""must"" when visiting San Antonio. Didn't get a chance to try the ritas but will definitely be back for more! more

Home dining experiece 5/7/2005

The menu isn't the greatest as far as variety, but the food is good and the service is good. More known for their margaritas than food, the food is good and the margaritas are strong. The restaurant is in the middle of a neighborhood in what appears to be an old house, split into several seating areas. Get directions before heading there, it's tucked away in a neighborhood, but well worth the drive. Make sure you have a DD if you plan on hitting the ritas! Pros: Best Margaritas in SA Cons: Limited menu more

Great food and view 5/19/2004

Ask to be seated in the ""patio"" for a very pleasurable outdoor dining experience. Their ""Un poquito de todo"" or a ""little bit of everything"" is outstanding, just make sure to leave room for their great deserts at the end. Award winning margarits. Pros: View, Food more

We LOVE La Fogata!! 5/13/2004

My husband and I have been faithful customers of La Fogata since they were little more than a remodeled gas station. We've brought family from all over the US, friends from England, Sweden, The Netherlands, Germany, etc., to La Fogata to introduce them to the delights of delicious Mexican cuisine (not pseudo Tex-Mex that they are accustomed to in Europe). Introducing them to the best was probably a mistake...as we're expected to send La Fogata's salsa all over the world, and now BY THE CASE to our grown children and grandchildren in Oregon and Utah for both birthdays and Christmas. We could chose anywhere in town to celebrate birthdays and holidays, but we usually choose La Fogata...where we're always welcomed as old friends, we know the margaritas are nearly as good as our own, and whatever we order always hits the spot. Average Food, Good Drinks 5/7/2004

The margarita's are terrific, just like El Mirasol's (and I think these two restaurants are related - correct me if I'm wrong). Try the Cadillac Margarita. The food is so-so. The salsa tastes burnt, maybe this is what makes it good to some people but it isn't good to me. Food is very expensive, and not that good. I agree with the other poster- this place is overrated, because it is pretty and nice, and with good 'ritas. But, the food leaves something to be desired. When you sit inside, you get these spindly little metal patio chairs on a tile floor so you have to adjust them just right so that you aren't in a crack and rocking back & forth. Pros: Good Margaritas Cons: , Food more

Good food, strong drink 2/4/2004

I was in San Antonio from Minneapolis and went to La Fogata one of the evenings I was there. I thought the Grilled Steak Fajitas were excellent, however the tortillas seemed a little dry and not as fresh. I will forewarn you on the Margaritas. I have no proof but rumor has it they put 151 in them. I can hold my own of which it took two to knock my on my butt. I will go back when I am back in town. Pros: Drinks more

Overrated 1/21/2004

There many far superior mexican food restraunts in San Antonio. If you're thinking about trying LaFogata, make it a night to try one of the others. The service is terrible, and the food is not much better. The setting is beautiful, but they need to stop surviving on their reputation, which is far out of date by now. Cons: Poor Service, Crowed, Poor Quality more

A little dissapointed 12/8/2003

I had high expectations after reading all the reviews, but I was a little let down. I judge all good mexican food on the basis of Fajitas first. Fogata does theirs differently, and it had no sizzle to it at all. Waiters were VERY good. Margarita was VERY strong. I will try it again and get something else, but initially I am a little let down. The pictures on the patio of all the stars that had visited were pretty cool. more

Will go again next visit to SA 5/19/2003

Best food! Great service! Polite staff. Will go again this summer when visiting! Pros: Great atmosphere, Very clean Cons: overcrowed parking more

Queso! 1/2/2003

We had a drink in our hands before we were even able to make it to the host stand! We were seated quickly and enjoyed the band while waiting for our food. Get the ""little bit of everything"" A+++++ more

Not romantic! 11/15/2002

La Fogata is not romantic. It's casual and loud. Fun to go in a group of friends. This survey asked for the most romantic restaurant and this certainly isnt. more

I love this place! 8/26/2002

La Fogata is one of my favorite spots in SA. I don't even mind waiting for a table because as soon as you sit down at the patio, a friendly waiter is there to take your drink order. All I can say is don't hesitate to order a Margarita. My personal favorite in SA... heck, anywhere! It's so relaxing to sit and sip a Margarita and laugh and visit with family and friends. The Patio has a beautiful fountain and is a wonderful tropical setting. Even when it's really HOT outside it feels cool there! Then when you do get seated for dinner get ready to enjoy some woderfully authentic Mexican food. The hot sauce is HOT and the waiters are attentive. I just love this place! Only drawback, not enough parking on busy nights and having to park in surrounding neighborhood in front of someones house. Pros: Margaritas, Ambience Cons: Parking more
