Nice atmosphere, but limited vegetarian options 5/11/2008

I visited this restaurant a couple weeks ago, it was recommended by my hotel concierge. I was excited to try it out, but disappointed to find limited meat-free options. Really there is only one safe dish on the menu - spaghetti pomodoro. It was edible, as well as the side of cannellini beans, but both were super garlicky - and I like garlic! The tomatoes were diced really small and were pale in color, so not as ripe as they should've been. I ended up trying a similar dish at N*ob Hill Cafe on Taylor, and their version is much better. Came back to Kuleto's with work colleagues last week, and I didn't want to eat the same dish again so had 3 veggies sides - the beans, spinach, and fingerling potatoes. They were all just ok. My dinner mates finished their plates so I guess the meat dishes are good. The cannoli for dessert was excellent, I would return and have that alone. Pros: Nice atmosphere, good dessert Cons: Not enough meat-free options more

Great Food, Great Service, Great Location! 4/19/2007

My fiancee have eaten here a couple different times, including the other night, and each times we've been delighted with the overall dining experience. Often times when eating at a restaurant you'll get great food and terrible service or vice versa. Not at this one. It was the perfect dining experience. The food was really good and the service was fantastic. Our server, Katy, was quite knowledgable about both the food and wine menus. We both had appetizers and entrees. I had a salad and my fiancee had some of their housemade salami (or salumi?) which was unbelievably good. Katy said they cure all of the meat in the restaurant so it was definitely fresh. For entrees, we shared some delicious pasta and splurged a bit and had the filet and both were great. We didn't get dessert but the people around us did and it looked great. I can't really think of anything negative to say about it other than that we had to wait a few minutes for a table. But it was a Saturday night and we didn't have a reservation so it's not that surprising. I just wish we lived on that side of the bridge so we could go there some more! Pros: Great Food, Personable & Knowledgable Staff, Extensive Wine List more

Delicious Italian in Union Square! 4/6/2007

I visited Kuleto's last weekend for dinner while shopping for dinner. As a SF resident, my impression was that the restaurant basically served average Italian food but did well because of its touristy location. I couldn't have been more wrong. I eat out quite a bit and Italian's my favorite and Kuleto's ranks right up with some of the better Italian restaurants around town. Our server told us that the restaurant had just been purchased and that the old chef from their glory days had come back. What a huge difference. The service was fantastic. Our server was a ""real"" person with a personality we could relate to and she had some excellent suggestions and definitely knew the menu well. The food was really good too. We started with bruschetta with arugula and fresh mozzarella that was to die for. I had veal and my wife had some pasta and both were excellent. My only complaint, if you can call it one since we didn't have a reservation, was that it was crowded but even at that we only waited about 10 minutes. I can't recommend this restaurant enough. And as a somewhat tough critic on SF restaurants, Kuleto's definitely passed my test and can't wait to go back. Pros: Food, Service, Location, Price Cons: Parking - But garages surround the place more

Perfect Before A Show 4/2/2007

We came on a Saturday night around 6:30 and were seated immediately at a table for two by the front window that faces Powell. We were able to eat and watch the bustle of the street outside. The bruschetta was superb! Some places are afraid of garlic, some places put too much on! This bruschetta was perfect, and the sun dried tomatoes (instead of the romas) were not too sweet. The pasta was okay, but not the best I've ever had. The bottom line is that Kuleto's was perfect for our purposes: a quick--yet romantic--dinner before Jersey Boys. Pros: Ambience more

Overrated restaurant...but, location, location, location 3/16/2007

Kuleto's on Powell Street was once a really good restaurant with pretty reasonable price...about 10-12 years ago. I would dine at this restaurant at least 3 times a month, maybe more. The quality and customer service took a dive a couple of years ago. I noticed this after have three (3) consecutive dinners there with my wife. The service was atrocious, but (of course) my wife really liked the radicchio appetizer with the goat cheese, so we would go back for that and some wine, since we couldn't replicate the dish at home too well. That dish was really the only dish that was good. They overcooked the pasta EVERY TIME I had it there. The last time I was there (for a business meeting) the waiter said that they couldn't cook it differently, because the chef doesn't do it like that! (I sware!)...so I ordered the veal. That evening I was extremely ill...getting ""sick"" all night into the morning. More to the story that I won't get into...Needless to say, I have never been back since. Pros: wine and apps, decent price points Cons: service is horrible, was sick all night after eating, that it's as busy as it is more

Good Modern Italian 12/3/2006

This has always been one of my favorite spots. Great atmosphere, food and wine. You must visit this restaurant early. It gets very crowded and your reservations do not always mean much. I have experienced spectacular service, even with children (which they do not like in their restaurant). Pros: Very Good Food and Service Cons: Hard to Get Seated Quickly- Long Waits more

SOLID MODERN ITALIAN 11/3/2006

Food in this busy eatery was an A- with highlights being the heirloon tomato salad (5 generous slices of different tomatoes), the salami to start, and the roasted monkfish. Portions are generous. We could have eaten our starters with bread and wine for a light meal. Wine list is extensive and a bit pricey, but our Giacoso white was well-worth it. Our waitress was aloof at first; she did warm up as our meal progressed. Water glasses kept full. Busy, busy place. Obviously full of happy smiling diners. Only negative is the noise and clatter, but some people do not mind that, do they? Convenient location nr. shopping and theaters. Pros: salumi, seasonal ingredients Cons: noise more

Average for the price 10/18/2006

I went there with friend of mine. We had reservation however had to wait another extra 30 minutes. Food was tasty however waiter attitude was horrible. I would pass next time on this one. Not worth the wait you overpay and on top you have to put up with staff attitude. Thanks but no thanks Pros: not much pros Cons: staff attitude more
