I absolutely love Korean food, and I heard this place was great. Well the food is, but the service is absolutely horrible. I am normally a great tipper (20-25%) and I contemplat...

I'm Korean and this food is very average. 2/27/2008

I'm Korean and I have been to many Korean restaurants obviously. On the spectrum of Korean restaurants, this restaurant was average to me and below average of the spectrum of actually good homemade Korean food. Pros: large variety of sushi and offers some good pork and shrimp bbq. lots of parking, pretty good service. free sidedishes Cons: sidedishes were below average and food was average. more

Not so good. 2/27/2008

I moved to Austin in Sept 07 and a couple of my friends have been taking me to different restaurants. Korea House is by far the worst. They've made me go here twice already and I didn't like it either time. The staff is actually really nice, but I notice that they put the americans on one side of the restaurant and the koreans on another...anyway they have a nice garden outside as well. Cute little bridge and a pond. The sushi though...not so good. It's decent but they put that rooster sauce on EVERYTHING. The best thing I've had there was the Austin roll. It was actually really good, but 3 out of 4 sushi rolls had rooster sauce on them even the white tuna the chef gave us had that sauce. The place is over priced and the sushi is old and boring. I don't know what all these other reviewers are raving about. Pros: The pond and bridge outside. Cons: The sushi. more

good korean, cheap - great lunch 12/28/2007

I have only had lunch here, and usually stick to the lunch specials. The spicy pork and bulgogi are good. The sides are all good. The fried dumplings are also good. The korean bbq looks great but i have never had it. I cant speak to the sushi, so cant recommened or otherwise on that. They are busy at lunch which is good - b/c that means they will continue to be around and I dont have to eat damn mexican food as much. Generally they seem to know what they are doing. its a korean restaurant - so your service will be typical of that. Pros: good food, good price, good lunch Cons: none. more

GREAT KOREAN BBQ 9/4/2007

Ordering the Korean BBQ and sitting a table with grill for you to cook your own food was an awesome experience, although very much on the spicy side, its all edible and good. Sushi is very good as well, somewhat pricy, but worth it, try the spider roll. Very fresh material. Service is great, the male waiters are specially customer oriented... Pros: Sushi at the bar is a nice experience Cons: Toilets could be better more

Very average food, definitely overpriced, and I ain't ever going back! 9/2/2007

We went here for lunch on Sunday as it was the closest thing available. We ordered the sashimi at 11.95 and the Lunchbox B for $12.95, thinking that 2 orders would be enough for me, the wife and our 8 year old daughter. Almost always, whenever we eat out, 2 entres are enough for us. Boy was I wrong. The sashimi was like 11 pieces but the salmon looked old and had a light brown/gray color to it meaning it was definitely not fresh. Piled high on a 3 inch bed of ice, my wife was disappointed that there was'nt any rice. Yeah, I know, it's not chirashi but then damn, don't charge 11.95 for this junk The Lunchbox B was supposed to come with bulgogi and spice pork bulgogi but the portions were so small that they were easily eaten in 1 bite each. And to top it off, the waiter just dumps a small mound of rice onto a serving place as if to say go for it instead of placing it in a rice bowl. And no banchan! Yeah I know since we ordered a lunchbox, but come on, at least bring out some frickin' kimchee. We're Korean after all, not some Caucasians that don't know anything about Korean food. Pros: When you're a beggar, you can't be choosy. Cons: Old sushi, overpriced, small portions. more

I love this place! 8/28/2007

We take anybody and everybody who visits us to this restaurant and they always want to go back! We go for the superb bul go gi (beef or pork) with all the nutritious and adventurous sides, and the chop chae which is ""can't stop eating this"" good! We like grilling the bul go gi ourselves, hanging out with a couple of OB's or Kirin's, & enjoying the company! We moved away for six years and since returned, having found the owner to be just as friendly and gracious as he ever was, huge smile whenever we walk in! All of their rolls are magnanimus...be careful of over ordering, the Mexican O*g*sm is luscious! Pros: Bul go gi & chop chae more

To all detractors 8/16/2007

I have been eating at the Korea House for three decades. It is still the best Korean food in town. If you want American style service with your meal go to F?ing Apple B?s you miserable P.O.S.! I am so tried of people who have no culture other then idiot. Go vote for W. again o? you already did that. Let me make it clear if you want the best deal on the freshest sushi in town with bigger cuts this is the place. Straight up good old Korean style service not American. They do not have chicken fried steak either. Louis is my name and good food is my game. more

Cranky AND Still Hungry 8/14/2007

I've been going to Korea House on and off for years, but TODAY WAS MY LAST VISIT. The Korean food is delicious (although I'd skip the mediocre sushi, since much better can be found in town), and the price is moderate. But the service!! Terrible is not sufficient to describe? Pros: Very Good Korean Food Cons: Horrible Service, Mediocre Sushi, Unclean more

Terrible banchan, and service is crappy 7/26/2007

I'm surprised that all my friends think of ""Korea House"" when they want to eat Korean. I'm native korean, and they are not, so maybe I have different standards. Pros: It's always packed for some reason Cons: Terrible side dishes, flies flying around, kimchee tasted WEIRD, and the food gets a C-. more

The sushi was fresh and the service was great 5/31/2007

i don't know if they changed up the waitstaff from the time some of these people did reviews, but the service was very friendly. They did forget my Miso soup, but all i had to do was ask, and i got it promptly. As for the sushi, it was very tasty, fresh and the rolls were terriffic. (We had the diana I and the 90210 roll) Personally, i *like* the ambience there, the best sushi places I've found have the worst look to them, mostly because they are concentrating on the food, not the ""specialness"" of the resturant. If you want a romantic setting, i suggest Mikado or Uchi, but be prepared to pay out the nose for your romantic night. Korea House will most likely become my new place to get regular sushi, as well as the fact that the Korean dishes come highly recommended by some foodie friends of mine. This place is a great standard to the Austin sushi scene. Pros: great service, great sushi Cons: not as 'pretty"" as other places, if that matters to you more

Fun time in the afternoon 1/15/2007

Great place to go after a movie on a weekday afternoon. Missed the lunch specials but had some great food - beef and noodle soups, spicy tofu soups, and each table gets samples of various Korean pickled dishes which were fun to try and pass around. Price was reasonable and took home left overs becuase the portions were huge. The service was quick and friendly - however there wasn't many people there at the time. more

Most authentic sushi in Austin with great service 1/13/2007

This is my favorite sushi joint in Austin. While there are upscale sushi restaurants that put alot of effort into the ambience and presentation, Korea House has straight-forward good food in a rather ordinary environment. The service is top-notch, and the food is authentic. I recommend, if you're there for sushi you should sit at the bar where G and his partners can treat you right. Pros: excellent food, friendly service, best sushi in Austin Cons: it's a whole in the wall more

My Fav. Korean restaurant! 10/29/2006

I'm korean but never learned to cook it from my mother. This place is perfect. Just like home! I love the bbq spicey pork! The beef bbq is great too! I love all the sides that come along with the dish. The sushi is very good as well! The meals are served timely and the staff is great (although they don't speak much) If you enjoy Korean food this place is a must! Pros: food! Cons: a little hard to find at first more

Really good food and overall experience 8/27/2006

My boyfriend and I went to Korea House after a coworker recommended it. I had a beef dish which was excellent and I am generally very picky about red meat. My boyfriend ordered the chicken teriyaki and I liked his a lot too. As an appetizer we shared a mixture of shrimp and vegetable tempura which was also excellent. All the different side dishes that they serve with the meal were really fun and interesting to try even though I wasn't sure what half of them were. Pros: food, parking more

poor sushi and horrible tea 8/21/2006

We went to the restaurant with my wife because our friend recommended it as a cheap place with great food. I am not korean, and not a sushi expert, but still I could notice some things unacceptable in the restaurant. more

indifferent service, but good food for cheap 6/22/2006

Yes, the service will be so-so. Yes, that is normal. Just be prepared to order all your food at once (which helps prevent missing/incorrect food) and have it delivered to the table as it comes out of the kitchen. Take a look at the sushi bar on the way in - if the fish looks good on the day you go, this is the best sushi and sashimi deal in town. Stick with sashimi, nigiri sushi, and simple rolls - the rolls with a lot of ingredients are sometimes poorly executed. Lunch specials are a great deal - the various bulgogi plates are generous and you get to choose your side dish. Yakki mandoo (pan-fried dumplings) are tasty, as are the fried vegetables (kind of like a veggie fritter). The atmosphere is what I imagine to be the Korean version of a roadside diner.... a bit greasy but with no pretensions of haute cuisine! Pros: cheap, tasty, and fast enough for your lunch hour. linger over beer if you go for dinner. Cons: definitely not health food (unless you get sashimi), kind of a greasy-spoon atmosphere more

Advice from a Regular 6/21/2006

LOL. Bad service? All the regulars realize that the service/customer relations is SUPPOSED to be that way. My favorite is the eldest waitress. She hates everyone!...but in a very loving way. Food is fantastic and the pond/gazebo is a fun place to catch a smoke. Don't expect chain restaurant here. Think family dinner with stern mamma. Once you become a regular and bring your friends, the people do warm up a bit. Never go here for a ""quick"" dinner. This is a great place to spend time talking and munching and just taking it easy. Pros: Excellent sushi - FRESH Cons: don't expect chain restaurant service & attitudes more

Terrible service! 5/22/2006

At Korea House--once one of my favorite restaurants--we were met with AWFUL service. Server was pushy to get orders, and then forgot about us the rest of the time. NO refills were offered on drinks--always had to request them multiple times. I requested a glass of water 3 times in the span of 45 minutes until it finally came. Server seemed totally spaced out. Friends ordered a dish which they apparently ""forgot about,"" (exact same dish was delivered to customers seated *way* after we were seated) Upon questioning the status of of our order, the server said ""oh, it hasn't arrived yet?"" I requested compensation for the horrible service, and the woman at the front and waiter suddenly failed to understand English and the situation at hand. Server came back and said that ""a meal couldn't be taken off because the check was already hand written"" BS!! Extremely dissapointing--NOT recommended. Cons: service, mediocre sushi more

Horrible manager and waitstaff 3/4/2006

I have been going to Korea House for over five years and up until today, it was my favorite korean restaurant in town, but after today's lunch experience, I will never go there. Waitstaff has never been exceptional but today, they refused to refill on their side dishes (they usually do this for free) or give us extra rice without a $3 fee. They claimed that we had not ordered enough (but our bill was well over 85 dollars, 30 of it spent on their nasty sushi). Even our waiter felt sheepish about this kind of service and said ""The manager told us this is the policy for you guys."" These are the rudest people I have ever met. There's plenty of other korean restaurants with the same quality but cheaper, with nicer people. Go somewhere else. This place is not worth it. more

My First Taste of Korean BBQ! 8/18/2005

Yup, this was my first time eating Korean bbq, and it was DELICIOUS! Their marinated meats are really tender and good. I would recommend the chicken bulgogi and the rib steaks. So good. I also love their little dishes that they lay out before you. Like kim chi, and just different pickled dishes. I'm sure that the rest of their menu is just as good, although I've never tried. Try going during lunch cause it's cheaper and just as good. Pros: Good FOOD Cons: Ok service more
