Great hotel for the price 6/19/2010

I have stayed at the King George several times, and am always pleased. The staff is both friendly and knowledgeable of all things SF. The price is right for what you do (or don't, rather) get. The location is awesome, as you are staying near the heart of the city--Union Square. Unfortunately, the rooms are pretty small and the hallways a tight squeeze, but the quirky decor helps to ignore that. Pros: near Union Square, friendly/helpful staff, quirky decor Cons: small rooms more

Food is not worth the price 12/24/2008

I went for tea with my daughter and it was totally overpriced. The food was very mediocre although the service was good until the end when I couldn't get the check. When I did get it, they tried to add a 20% gratuity to the check for two people and call it tax. This is just offensive. The idea of a mandatory gratuity on something like tea is really a joke and they tried to say the person who did it was gone so I had to wait 10 minutes to get it fixed. Pros: good service Cons: way overpriced more

Great Location, Clean Rooms, Service Staff Friendly and Helpful, and Reasonably Priced! 4/7/2008

This hotel is a great location close to shopping, cafes, bars, nightlife, theatrical theaters (yet we didn't have tickets to a show so will go next time in town). Union Square and the cable car to the wharf is one block behind the hotel with many bars, cafes and restaurants are nearby, yet if you want the best restaurants to dine, reserve a time in advance as the concierge will assist you. The rooms are a bit snug yet quiet, and worked fine for two, the shower was hot and bed very comfy. We did order room service for breakfast and it comes from the diner next door, breakfast was warm, decent food and worked well to start our day. If anyone has ever stayed in NYC, the King George Hotel has a similar ambience like older hotels but truly neat to experience. The hotel service was friendly and greeted us day and night as my wife and I came and went about our schedule of things to see nearby. The hotel is close to Chinatown, the SFMOMA, and even the visitor?s center at the Powell Bart station a few blocks away, which really helped set up our days to visit the best of things in San Francisco. Wireless internet is free and it worked for what I needed. As a couple the hotel is great for visitors spending up to a weeks stay, the location, staff and hotel services make up for the smaller rooms, yet if I had to deal with a business trip I may want a Westin or Marriott but then that wouldn?t be on my dime. The price is very reasonable versus the other hotels in the same area. Note: When walking nearby other hotels that were up to $400+ a night I found that these ?Hollywood? hotels are great to visit for a drink or dinner but not worth it if you want to stay at a hotel where they are over-run by visitors to their restaurants and bars, smokers outside and their lobby areas so loud with techno music and hustling, that at the end of our day or night we returned to this quiet retreat, the King George Hotel, just a block away from the city chaos. Pros: Value (free internet access) & Location, Parking Garage is directly across from the hotel! Cons: smaller rooms but clean and quiet more

HORRIBLE experience from start to finish!! 1/12/2007

I am a business traveller and after checking out the King George's website I was excited to stay at a hotel that looked stylish, had a good location and sounded friendly and welcoming (despite small-ish rooms mentioned on several reviews). Well, my experience was NOT at all what I was expecting. I arrived on a Friday afternoon around 2:00pm and pulled up to the front of the hotel where the Valet Parking sign was posted. I sat there for several minutes expecting someone to come out and greet me and valet my car. From my car, I could see into the hotel where the concierge sat at his desk in the lobby and where the staff stood behind the front desk. Neither were occupied with other customers, and yet neither one greeted me or even "waved" me in to let me know I could leave my car and come in. My companion finally went in and found out the I could leave the car and check in. After struggling to get my bags through the doors, which no one offered to hold open, I checked in. After checking in, I was given a room on the 8th floor with a queen size bed- the room was TINY as was the bathroom- seemed nice and clean however which was good. They then called and offered to put me in another room which was a bit bigger- again nice of them. Unfortunately, The new room was on the second floor and about the same size.. only the closet was a bit bigger.. a closet that contained the coffee maker! Odd! The TV looked like it had spent the last few years in a dorm room. Out the window was the back of a building. Felt a bit claustropobic, but I figured I'd be busy the next 5 days so maybe it wouldn't bother me that much. I then ordered room service for lunch, which arrived in styrofome containers and was NASTY. 2 hours after checking in, I checked back out- but not until being charged for a 1/2 day rate! For the Nasty lunch, and for valet parking- which I was told at that moment I need to pay cash for (of which I had none) and had to walk down the road in search of an ATM. Pros: Seemed Clean, has wireless internet for free, good location Cons: Tiny Rooms, BAD room service, mis-leading website, would be okay for a night but I would not recommend for an extended stay more

Calm and Quiet- just perfect. 12/13/2004

I feel so bad for the previous poster! I've been coming to have tea at the King George for about 3 or 4 years now, and have had nothing but wonderful service and great tea. I feel like I'm walking into someone's home; the last time I enjoyed tea here, the gentleman gave us extra goodies. He is a real sweetheart. I usually go on Sunday afternoons, and never have a problem with seating. It's such a calm, quiet room; great respite from the busy streets on a hectic day. Pros: Friendly Service, Attention to detail, Handmade goodies more

Horrible experience, worst service 7/20/2004

This was a well planned out December treat for a hard day of shopping. What a complete disappointment. We were ignored by both waiters even though they weren't busy. One waiter obviously went out of his way to ignore us and give preferential treatment to other guests. We were dressed nicer than the other guest so I don't think it was because we disgraced their ambience. Finally we were served by the busgirl who forgot to give us cups. The food was mediocre at best. Waste of time, waste of money. Pros: Nothing, Nothing, Nothing Cons: , LAME SERVICE, Mediocre food more

Fabulous! 4/12/2003

Great location, updated rooms are warm and fun! Staff was very knowledgeable about San Francisco and gave me the inside things to do and how to do them easily. Great rates, walked everywhere and safe for a single woman. I'll be back as this hotel is affordable, clean and the best in San Francisco in the boutique class. Other hotels in SF have the its 'Not my Job" attitude but the King George made me feel like I was the only guest.... Royal treatment for a great price... ENJOY! Pros: Rate may inc. Parking more

since childhood 12/1/2002

I have been a guest at the King George since I was a child. The best qualities of this hotel are the location and the staff. The employees are welcoming and helpful. The rooms are small, and need for closet space, but the proximity to Union Square and the friendliness of the staff far out weigh the size. more
