Incredibly Rude, Slow, Troubling Service 8/12/2008

I went with four friends for lunch on Tuesday at 1pm. It is a small space, so it was understandable that they are not used to parties of five, but as they are located in midtown, and they should be prepared for a busy lunch hour. The server begrudgingly asked what we wanted to drink, and when she returned with our drinks she placed them in the middle of the table, leaving our party to divvy it up. No napkins, or place settings were given to us. The three friends that ordered sushi received their lunch in about 25 minutes, and the sushi is a good deal, but nothing spectacular in the quality of the fish. However, the friends that ordered ""lunch boxes,"" which included tempura from the kitchen waited another thirty minutes before they received their food. Tables seated next to us who sat after we did and ordered after we had received their tempura and lunch boxes before my friends. As in, people who ordered the same meal at the other tables received their food first. My two friends who sat and waited for 30 minutes for their lunches to arrive are black, and we were left to wonder if the servers had a problem serving black people. They never offered any of us refills on our drinks, and the server was rude to us when we asked on the status of the food. My party really disliked our lunch there, and I will not ever eat there again, in case there was any race issue related to the poor quality of service. more

I agree with the previous review... really BAD sushi 1/12/2007

When I first walked in to this hole-in-the-wall, I thought to myself ""How quaint."" Then when I was seated and saw the staff my hopes dropped tremendously -- yet another Japanese restaurant run by Chinese. The first problem arose with the fish, very low quality, with that fishy smell that is indicative of poor fish -- fresh fish doesn't smell fishy! Second, the soy sauce was WAY too salty to be Japanese soy sauce, which has a lighter, sweeter taste. I thought something was off when I noticed that the soy sauce was way too black -- Japanese soy sauce has a more brown tint! Overall, a really bad experience and I'm surprised that other reviewers here rated it so highly. Either they don't know what is good Japanese food, are blinded by cheapness (cheap and quality can go hand in hand), or they are planted reviews. Avoid this place. Pros: Price Cons: Low quality, Chinese soy sauce more

Worst sushi I've ever had, it should be illegal to sell if it was any worse! 1/8/2007

It's not exaggeration, it was really the worst sushi I've ever had. Like a lot other places, sushi made my Chinese. To make it worse, they even use Chinese soy sauce!!! And if you don't know, chinese soy sauce are much much saltier and not designed for dipping if your taste buds work right. (Trust me, I'm chinese and I grew up with it). The prices are really low, but so is the quality of the sushi. The rice was stale, tasted like sushi that you left in the fridge overnight. Fish had a bad taste to it, very not fresh, I really believe that if it was any worse I could get sick from it. The place doesn't feel very clean neither, a bit unsanitary, especially the bathroom. It was an accident that I went into this place because next door Le Bonne Soupe was packed and the line was out the door. And I will never go back, you can get much better sushi at other holes in the wall for the same low prices. Pros: cheap Cons: bad food, bad soy sauce more

Cheap & Comfy 8/5/2004

My comfy little restaurant never disappoints. Decor is minimal but, cleanly maintained. The food is dotty. It's hit and miss. I would stick with the sushi menu or staples like chicken teriyaki. That being said, they get sushi right on! The Dragon roll is delicious and my favorite thing there. Menu prices are LOW. Lunch draws the huge business/tourist crowd who know a good cheap eats place when they see one. Avoid lunch as you'll wait forever for a table. more

the best! 1/3/2003

i go to kikku about twice a week and they never let me down. service is ALWAYS prompt. great fresh sushi at a great value make this place a real midtown gem more

Yummy! 11/20/2002

By far better than any of the ""fast food"" sushi places with catchy names, Kikku is about the same price and worth every penny! Its location makes it an undiscovered gem in Midtown, sshh... don't tell. where else can you get tea, soup, and a full sushi lunch for under $10??? Pros: cheap, quiet more
