Friendly Service 9/7/2010

Not bad, not the best either. We've eaten at places on Oahu such as Helena's whose kahlua pork and ribs are to die for each and every time. I don't know if it's fair to compare this restaurant in Seattle, to the one in Oahu, but I shall, since people told me to come here for authentic Hawaiian cuisine. I doubt they are roasting the kahlua pork in a pit, so the taste is close, but NOT quite hitting the mark for authentic Hawaiian pork. They did not have any haupia, but told us to go next door to the dismally supplied dessert place. We shall get to that one later in this review. Anyway, the food was good here, but oversalted, and the place is just a bit greasy. They have some huge wall fans in this place that must have caught someone's body odor and spread it throughout the restaurant for a good 3 minutes, which turned my stomach. I suspect it was from outside? Anyway, the service was nice and friendly, the place was consistently busy, and they really cannot accommodate large parties (7 +), so be wary. They will direct you to the dessert place next door for desserts that Kauai does not carry, but that bakery had such few items, we thought they were going out of business!! They try to sell those cheap puka shell necklaces for $8.00!! at the bakery --necklaces we got for FREE in Hawaii just for stepping into a store. more

BEST HAWAII FOOD IN SEATTLE,WA *AMAZING GUAVA CAKE @ KAUAI DESSERTS 10/25/2007

I went on a weekday and we were seated promptly. There weren't very many people there and the ambience was exactly the look you would see when you are at a local restaurant in hawaii. I guess you could say that everything was all ""hammajang"". I had hamburger steak and my friend had beef stew. The taste was exactly as I remember it back in Waimanalo at Frankie's drive-in which is no longer there or even Rainbows in downtown. The food is fantastic! It was so ONOLICIOUS! The prices are great! The service was great! In fact my friend and I liked it so much we went back the day after as well. On the left side of the restaurant there is a separate facility called Kauai Desserts, which has the BEST by far Guava Cake. I don't think any of the bakeries on Oahu can beat their Guava Cake. A piece costs $3.50 and its so worth it. If you get a half sheet it is $54 and a full sheet is $85. YOU MUST TRY THIS CAKE~~~~ Pros: parking, guava cake, prices, service, ambience, food Cons: still thinking more

Too crowded 9/3/2007

There were no tables. We went at 145pm on a Friday, hoping to avoid the lunch rush - however - we stood around for about 5 minutes, no one acknowledged our presence, and it all looked a little dirty and disheveled. So we left. I'm glad thier business is thriving but I can't see waiting a long time for the privilege of eating rice and macaroni salad and fried meat. more

Hey Brah -- dis da best! 6/13/2007

Nothing helps bring me back to the islands than Kauai Family Restaurant. By far has the best Hawaiian food -- even their malasadas are fantastic. Mahalo! Pros: Lots of great food, malasadas, Hawaiian breakfast, poke, everything! Cons: Service can be slow, but hey that's island time more

Yum Yum Ginger Chicken 11/15/2006

Great lunch place for eating in or picking up and being the hero of the office in bringing it back for a crowd. Their ginger chicken is out of this world (watch for bones). Very friendly and warm atmosphere and a pretty decent size crowd during weekday lunches for a reason - they're just that good. Very good selection and flavor, menu is for folks on a budget and the service is great. Pros: Good food - try the ginger chicken Cons: Parking tight more

Close to home cooking - Island Style 10/5/2006

I know of nine Hawaiian resturants in western Washington. When I get an urge for ""close to authentic island cooking"" or comfort food, Kauai's Family Rest. is one of three of my favorite Hawaiian restaurants. Pros: Good food Cons: Parking more

Poke Is Da Kine 12/8/2004

Kauai Family Restaurant makes great Poke! I requested a day ahead exactly how I wanted it, w/o Shoyu - real authentic style and they made it perfect! I love the extensive menu of plate lunches and hard to find Island Favorites. The bakery next door is where I order my Guava, Lilikoi and Haupia Cakes (the exact ones you find in Uwajimaya). When you come inside, expect a full house of customers, you may have to wait a bit...but the 'aloha' here is real and if you are looking for a place that takes you back to 'Island Time' - don't be in a rush, enjoy the pace. The live music is relaxing and you can even request Hawaiian favorites. I will definitely come back! Pros: Fresh Poke, Plate Lunches, Loco Moco more
