I would like to start off saying that I am not a vegetarian or a vegan, I just enjoy good food. Karen's has high quality chicken, salmon and turkey offerings, but it is mostly vegetarian with organic and healthy food. I have been going there for a few years as I work around the corner and have been enjoying the black bean chili among other things. For about 2 of those 3 years I thought it contained real beef! As an Italian carnivore, I could not believe I had been fooled, even though there is a sign stating "all our soups are vegan with the exception of the chicken vegetable". My tastebuds told me it was beef so I seem to have ignored the sign subconciously.
The place is comfortable and clean. The service is quick, polite and professional despite being crowded. The food is of the highest quality and taste. You do pay a little more for the quality but that should be expected. A large black bean chili and a small house (delicious) salad will run you about $10 which I find reasonable.
I don't write a lot of reviews but I feel I owe it to Karen's because not only do I go there at least a couple times a week and appreciate the food, but on top of that I had the good fortune of meeting Karen herself. What a lady! I had to work on New Years Eve day and headed to Karen's for a cup of coffee. The streets were quiet as was Karen's. In fact, for the first time, I was the only customer. When I reached for my wallet I realized I had no cash. A woman with a beautiful english accent and a friendly tone lifted her head and said "don't worry about it. Today it is free. Have a muffin too."
I now know why I love this place! The owner is wonderful and it is evident in the restaurant she owns. I am now even more of a loyal patron than I already was.
Thank you Karen.
Pros: Quality everything!
Cons: Small and crowded.
