love it 9/4/2011

I was very impressed with Just Calm Down and the amazing treatment that I received! Their Jewelicious facial was just I needed to chase away the winter blues! The staff/service was wonderful and I definitely plan on visiting again to check out more of their yummy treatments! * Pros: Relaxing, Professional, Fun more

For $130 Mani/Pedi, where's the beef? 7/1/2011

We signed up for a discounted Mani/Pedi special through Groupon. I admit that we were expecting a lot for a $130 mani/pedi. What we got was a just ok mani/pedi. When I called to make the appointment, I was rushed off the phone. Upon arrival, we were seated on not just a threadbare couch in the reception area, but one with holes in it. We then were asked to fill out some forms and choose from a menu of wonderful sounding mani/pedi combos. We both chose one that stated it included a seaweed wrap and a tropical fruit punch. We were then taken into a fairly public, not quiet or calming area, to have the treatments. They descirbe the ambiance as "french cafe", but it was basically very uncomfortable wicker chairs and metal tables, not those nice massage, spa bath chairs. We never got what I'd call any kind of seaweeed wrap. We got your basic mani/pedi. I guess the wrap was the moisturizer they put on for a few minutes and covered with seran wrap. By almost the end of the service, we had not received our "tropical drink" as described in their menu. When I asked about it, they didn't know what I was talking about, and finally brought some mediocre lemonade. The minute the last coat of polish was put on, the manicurists disappeared. No help with any little smudges, or taking off the little foam sandles and getting your shoes back on. All in all, I can get a much nicer experience around the corner from my house which includes a $15 manicure with a 10 minute massage. Thank goodness we didn't pay the full price of $130 because the experience was mediocre for a normally priced mani/pedi. more

My Favourite Spa Of All!!! 1/10/2011

That's right! Run, Don't walk!!! I'm a Spa and beauty editor and I just love this place and especially people who work there!!! Due to my work I have to try a lot of places but I always come back to this one for my routine treatments. My first time at this Spa was a couple of years ago when we were working on the article about Just Calm Down and their sweet mani/pedi services. I became a regular client since then. Romeo is the best massage therapist on earth, and Anastasia does the best facials there, plus her waxing takes 7-10 minutes which is very convenient for my busy schedule. Go to Esther for nails. I have to tell you I just melt in their golden hands. And keep in mind: the most of the services done with organic ingredients! And the place itself is so pretty. It is a jewel of a spa indeed. I strongly recommend it to everybody more

Best Spa in NYC 12/11/2010

The below review is pretty tacky and I feel sorry for someone who appears so unhappy. Just Calm Down is the best Spa I have ever been to and I have been to spas all over the world. I have been going there for six years. The mani-pedis are amazing. The list of choices goes on forever. Your feet feel like puffy clouds when they are finished. The room is beautiful!!! When I am there, I feel like I am being pampered in a garden cafe in Europe. My weekly water bed massage is also pretty fantastic. The owner and her staff go out of their way to make you feel special. If they are running late they always take extra special care of you. Just Calm Down is the place to go! Treat yourself for the holidays and always! more

Sex and the City Chic 10/27/2010

Last week I went there to get a massage and a pedicure, and really it was the best experience ever. I loved the atmosphere and the way the staff made me feel. I felt awesome after my services. My back feels like a million bucks! I was so glad that my therapist really listened to my issues and addressed them all. I loved it so much that I added an additional half hour. My pedicure was also very relaxing. I loved the nail area. It feels like you are inside a garden. The big, wicker chairs were terrific. I also really liked that the foot bowls were not attached to sinks. The vibe is great. After reading some reviews I was astonished that anyone would not love the decor! So different--like sex and the city chic-NOT MEDICINAL like a doctors office. Come see for yourself why this spa is worth every penny! more

Best Massage I've Ever Had 10/27/2010

I've had massages all over the world, and am very particular, but my last visit to Just Calm Down was by far the best massage I've ever had. I had the 007 massage and it was out of this world. It really made me feel like James Bond!! The staff were extremely courteous and friendly, its a really beautiful place and made my day. Reading some of the reviews here it sounds like people are trying their best to complain to get discounts. After all, this isnt the cheapest spa, but you get what you pay for and if you want the best, you should check this place out. I'll definitely be coming back! more

THE WORST! 10/26/2010

After reading all the bad reviews I decided to write a review to explain that all the bad reviews rolled into one experience at JUST CALM DOWN was the experience I had. I too am a huge fan of spas/massages and this was the worst massage I have ever gotten in my entire life. The room was freezing. The lights were bright. The music was loud. Oh, not to mention the receptionist was horribly rude and actually didn't have my appointment scheduled when I arrived! The massage was inconsistent...massaged one hand but not the other. And the mention of not asking if I prefer a man or a woman masseuse, yes, that happened to me. I went with my friend and we were taken back together by the masseuses and we had to decide then who got who...what if we both didn't want a man? HORRIBLE, JUST HORRIBLE! more

MY FAVORITE!!! 10/24/2010

I absolutely agree with the previous review!!!! My boyfriend gave me a Gift Certificate for a massage a couple of years ago and since then I'm addicted!!!! I just loooove this place! For me it's the best, cos it's so pretty but simple at the same time, I feel very comfortable there! Sometimes I go to get a service there even if I don't really need it... just to communicate! I love my girls!!! They always treat me as a queen!!! <3 Thank you all for taking care of me!!! :-* more

Love This Spa 10/23/2010

Love this place. I had heard from some friends how great the services were so I decided to check out for myself. I came for the first time with a Lifebooker coupon ( worth the wait! and what a deal! ) & I must say that I was very impressed. I had an amazing male therapist who really was a real expert. I chose to upgrade to a heated deep tissue massage and It was out of this world. His neck work helped my knots tremendously. I was so happy with the way I felt, that I wanted to add on a facial. They were booked, so I came back 3 weeks later and it was a face life changer. Relaxing, thorough, and great deep, painless extractions. The massage portion was heaven! I am so happy that my friends introduced me to this wonderful place and I will be a loyal fan for years. more

Barely decent massage but mediocre spa, skip it 9/27/2010

I went on a Monday afternoon after getting a discount coupon on line for $100 service for $50, and after being told that the Friday afternoon appointment I wanted was impossible, they are supposedly very busy then, booked this instead. Mid afternoon on a Monday, I was the ONLY client there. No manicure pedicure person, I am talking NADA. Very creepy. I had a male masseur, which was fine with me, but I have never been to a spa (and I am a spa junkie) where I was not asked if that was OK. No changing room, no robe, I took off my clothes and put them on a chair in the massage room. And no shower after, I left covered in massage lotion. I had a decent massage (not great by any means). I thought the whole place was cheesy and had a really bad vibe, and I will never go back. more

The Rea l Deal 8/20/2010

This place is for real! Props to all of the staff from beginning to end. I was welcomed with a smile and left with glowing skin, the greatest massage experience ever. and a pedicure that is still going strong 3 weeks later after sand and sandals!. How lucky I am that I was recommended to this Spa from a colleague. The ambiance is super relaxing and super beautiful. The relaxing cafe like area for nails is beyond cool. They have these great blue bowls that truly beat those outdated sinks! My esthetician was so skin smart and so talented that my skin is still smiling! The massage was on this cool water bed. It was warm and relaxing and I will tell you the neck, back and leg work was out of this world. Thanks to everyone at just calm down for making my time there so special. By the way, I have already booked my next set of appointments and this time I am bringing my best friend! Can't wait! more

Cool place but not for MY wallet 8/17/2010

I had a facial and manicure at Just calm down. The decor was nice and made me feel away from the city. The manicure was okay, something you can get at your local corner nail salon minus the chocolate soak, yummy - but the manicurist was so sweet and nice (tipped her based on her personalitiy) Cool colors for polish. My facial was relaxing but wish it was more than just a face massage. I had a 5:30 appt but since i was 10 minutes late they cut my service short. Not Cool. They should have told me that over the phone when I spoke to them at 5:30 pm, but that was my fault, I was late but I expect to get what I pay for. Other than that mishap this place is nice but I would not pay the full price for their services, too expensive for what you get. more

Worst spa I've tried & I've been to over approx. 100 of them 7/27/2010

I made an appointment (earlier today) on lifebooker for 6:45pm. I was there at 6:40pm and was greeted by a woman working the front desk. After filling out 2 pages of forms, she offered me a drink, which I politely declined, but she kept insisting, so I asked her what she had. She mentioned wine, to which I delightfully agreed. About 5 minutes later, I saw a glass of wine and asked if somehow that was the one for me, she said it wasn't and took it away. A few minutes later, she offered me some magazines, at which point I reminded her that she really had me excited about that wine. She replied that she could not retrieve the wine, because she had to mind the front door. She actually seemed annoyed that I kept asking about it--after she had insisted on offering!!! Then she mentioned that I should wait in the next room (the nail treatment room). Which I did. All the while getting a sense of how awful the pedicure bowls (like cooper pots) looked and how incredibly uncomfortable the wicker arm chairs looked (for pedis, or for just sitting anytime even). So later, after waiting a total of half an hour (keep in mind: she is the only person I saw the entire time), with still no wine, and no apologies - I went back to the front (where I saw yet another new glass of wine, whose...I wonder?) and asked to reschedule, which she did for me (I think you can guess that I am going to cancel that). Never an apology from her. Then as I tried to leave, the door was locked (which I had to pull on the door once and push once before she finally told me it was locked!) ...so what was that story about watching the door? Horrible waste of a half hour of my time. I think they need to take time to figure out if they can handle lifebooker clients, at the last minute. I've been to probably over a hundred spas and this is, by far, the worst I've ever been to and I see, from other reviews, that it is quite dirty as well. Just awful. Stay away! Not to mention that their prices are insane! Pros: my only pro is that I didn't spend any money there Cons: service, comfort (do not go here, seriously!!!) more

Best massage I've had in years! 5/19/2010

I booked an appointment at Just Calm Down Spa after I had heard great things from my friends. After seeing all of the great reviews, I was even more excited. I am so glad I did because not only did I have the best massage that I've had in years, I have finally found a spa I love after looking for months! It is really hard to find a good spa in New York City with decent prices and I've finally found it. Highly recommended! Pros: Friendly staff, beautiful spa more

great spa 5/19/2010

best facial of my life. I'm actually going back tonight.... I would not go anywhere else.... ever! Pros: great spa with great people who work here Cons: none more

Wonderful experience 5/19/2010

I went in to have a facial here and absolutely loved my aesthetician! She was extremely knowlegeable and helpful and gave me great advice on how to improve the appearance of my skin. I've been doing what she said and using the products she suggested and I've seen great results after only 3 weeks! I highly recommend this place. Pros: Great facials more

Didn't Remind of Appointment? 5/12/2010

I made a spasally appointment for Just Calm Down. I called a few months after the promotion, figuring the rush to schedule manicures would be done, but I had to schedule an appointment a month away - for a manicure. Whatever, I thought, I already spent the money. Cue today where I get a phone call saying I'd missed my appointment and the money from spasally was forfeit! The forfeiture wasn't a surprise - that's the policy for spasally and the participating places and I know that - but it was the fact that I didn't receive a call to remind me. What spa doesn't do that? In all my years as a spa-goer, I've *never* not gotten a reminder call. Color me surprised. When I called to confirm that it was indeed their policy not to call, I also got a great little condescending speech about how people usually write things down in a blackberry or on a calendar. No kidding. And spas usually make reminder calls. Apparently neither of us did what the other expected - only I'm out money and they are not. Some advice for the future: A simple "yes, I'm sorry but that's our policy" followed by a quick "would you like to rebook anyway?" might have got me to come in anyway. The 'people usually write it down' jab during my follow up call made me write this instead. Pros: None Cons: What spa doesn't call to remind you? more

A Memorable Mother's Day 5/9/2010

I wanted to add that I just visited JCD recently again and I had the BEST massage of my life! Everyone who loves just calm down should spread the word! I am their biggest fan. what a most wonderful surprise was my Mother's Day gift from my husband--a pair of massages and facials (for my mom and me--isn't that sweet!) at just calm down spa! So many of my girlfriends have already been there, raving about the place, the staff and all the services but work and family life just kept me away--but not today! Our massages from Brook and facials from Jen were just so, well, so PERFECT! Every moment was so special, a beautiful Mother's Day memory we shared! At last, I got to JUST CALM DOWN! Pros: Beautiful Space, Great Massages and Facials, Helpful Staff Cons: can't move in more

Don't use Brooke 5/9/2010

It wasn't me, but my mom, for mother's day (today, May 9th, 2010). I paid by phone with gratuities. Was that a mistake? Should I have given my mom money or just tell her to tip herself? My mom had massages before, most recently at Oasis. She said that the woman there was big boned (meaning, I guess, was strong though not overly so), friendly and clearly enjoyed her job. Brooke, at Just Calm Down, was not any of those. First, let me say that conversation is not a dealbreaker. But you know how someone gives you a half-hearted massage at 11am (the first appointment of the day), the place just doesn't have high standards. Any one of her family members could've given her a better one, she came back and told me. Brooke was so sloooooow, that she didn't even cover my mom's entire body. She thinks that Brooke only went through 60% of the routine. She only got to massage one of her feet! When my mom asked her to do the other, she picked up both at the same time and squeezed her big toe! What is that?!?! And why would the receptionist ask which parts of the body to focus on, if she wasn't going to take the info and use it? My mom wanted shoulders and lower back... she got some shoulders but no lower back. Brooke seemed inexperienced, or not used to using strength as my mom felt her trembling from exertion... weird... I called Tara, (the boss?!?) who I'm not sure heard my complaints as she was inundated with calls (b/c of mother's day) and she said she would call me back and then hung up. That's rich, as she did not take my name or phone number. I wish I did not tip her the 20% that was suggested by Tara when I first made the call. I read all the great reviews from Google but I guess we were just the unlucky ones... I wouldn't tell people not to come as other people have had better luck... but jeez, make sure you ask for someone with years of experience first. What a waste of my hard earned money! Pros: Nice big place, comfortable waiting room, discount Cons: The woman mentioned above was inexperienced and half-hearted more

love the facials (and the occasional specials) 1/10/2010

for facials, ask for Ilana. she was one of the best facialists i've had in manhattan! very attentive. goes above and beyond. other than Ilana, JCD offers really great specials every now and then, which make pampering much more affordable. Pros: thorough, relaxing, great products, and great specials more
