Best

Jones Beach Theater is a premium concert venue. There is nothing like an outdoor concert on a clear warm starry July night with a balmy breeze blowing off the bay. I have attended...

Worst

I was so excited to go see one my favorite artists, Lucinda Williams, opening for John Cougar Mellencamp... I thought it would be one of the best concerts of my life. Wrong. ...

Don't go there, period. Worst concert experience of my life! 7/11/2008

I was so excited to go see one my favorite artists, Lucinda Williams, opening for John Cougar Mellencamp... I thought it would be one of the best concerts of my life. Wrong. First, the security people rudely told me my handbag was "large" and that I couldn't bring it in... this was the one high point of the show (excepting Lucinda's performance, of course) as the bag check person was incredibly friendly. I was still hassled by security on the way with my sweater in my arms, having to shake it out to ensure I wasn't sneaking any of that demon alcohol in - and this might be the biggest gripe about the place, that there is NO ALCOHOL at all... the sodas are $5, water (I think, I didn't buy anything while I was there) was $4.50... sure, I expect high prices - I would've ponied up $10 for a beer, as I have at other venues in the past - but for soda?!?! My ticket was for front row center on the balcony (cheapest seats) but because the show hadn't sold enough tickets, everyone from the balcony was asked to move to section 6 - without any further instructions, no seat assignments, nothing. This, obviously, turned into a fiasco of nearly epic proportions, heightened when they started issuing tickets in that section to people who showed up later, who of course wanted their "proper" seats... this all reached a climax about a minute after Lucinda took the stage, and nearly threw me into a fit of rage, but I just tried to shut out the arguing and enjoy the show. Even being moved up, though, I was so far away that the speed of sound couldn't keep up with the show on stage, making me feel like I was watching a screwed up DVD or something. I was so put off by everything about the place I left immediately after her set, even though I kinda wanted to see Mellencamp... After I left, I was still accosted by security while waiting for the bus outside the venue for sitting in the wrong place (no sign or mark said so, though)... I would NEVER go back. Pros: Nice bag check person. Cons: Everything else. more

Jones Beach Theater is a premium concert venue. There is nothing like an outdoor concert on a clear warm starry July night with a balmy breeze blowing off the bay. I have attended many concerts there and the sound quality on the floor level seating is among the best you will hear any where. It always pays to bring a jacket because it can get cool being next to the water. It seems to me that even the entertainers love playing at this theater because it shows in their performances. The crowds there are great too. Drinks and food can be expensive but that's not why you came. Pay a little extra for the floor seats. It will be well worth it. Pros: Sound Quality, Atmosphere Cons: Expensive Food and Dr more

REALLY SUCKS! 8/5/2002

Jones Beach Theater sucks! Employees are rude and abrasive, and they take their jobs waaaaay too seriously, constantly telling patrons what to do and what NOT to do. No alcohol is served, and food/drink is extremely overpriced anyway. You can count on spending $4 for a normally $1 bottle of water, and sodas are $5. And don't even get me started on their rain-or-shine policy. I got rained on at two different shows, including David Bowie, whose set was cut short due to lightning, with no compensation whatsoever--and tickets were $75!! In future if I want to go to any outdoor shows, I'll stick with the Garden State Art Center in NJ. Pros: none Cons: everything more

  • In Short
Just 39 miles from midtown, Jones Beach boasts a two-mile boardwalk, four miles of bike paths, Olympic-sized and kiddie pools near the East and West Bath Houses, a snack bar and even a senior citizens' lounge. The western side of the beach is designated for surfers to ride the waves. Bring friends or make friends--the beach is a sunnier, more leisurely and friendly extension of the city itself.
