Johnathan's, good food but just OK service 8/15/2008

We have been going to Johnathan's off and on for a few years, sometimes the food is good, sometimes it is just OK. I had the cajun steak which was very good. We have found the service to be just OK on most occasions, tonight service was poor and we could tell that the server was not experienced. The prices are what we would expect in Portland, not Salem and somethings are just over priced as the food cost for the item is very low. The air conditioning was not working well and it was so hot that we left before finishing our meal. \r \r more

Memorable Fish Tacos, If Nothing Else 1/13/2008

As apprehensive as I was about an oyster bar in Salem, I tried Jonathan's on a whim several years back. Since then, I've come back about half a dozen times for their fish tacos and excellent Tuesday drink specials. Unfortunately, the prices have risen steadily over the ages, and their forgettable creole fare hasn't changed to match. That's not to say that it's prohibitavely expensive to have a nice dinner out at Jonathan's, because it certianly isn't-- Despite its laid-back demeanor, it's actually one of the nicest upscale restaurants in the city. Service is usually prompt and friendly, and it's never too hard to get a table. The food, however, falls a bit shy of four stars. Pros: Great downtown location, reliable service, decent food. Cons: A bit too expensive, inconsisent menu. more

This establishment has been around since about 1980..It changed owership several years ago. The new owners made sure that all the good things didn't change.
