Lard on a Bun 1/29/2011

I really wanted to love Johnnie's. The 50's era architecture and signage always caught my eye as I drove down Sepulveda Boulevard. I made a mental note to try it the next time I had a craving for a hot pastrami sandwich. That day finally came, and what a disappointment! The waitress asked if I preferred my pastrami lean or fatty. I said, ""as lean as possible, please"". But, the sandwich delivered to me was almost pure lard with very little of the lean, pink pastrami I was hoping for. When I pointed that out, the waitress said that was as lean as it comes. I tried a couple bites and couldn't eat anymore. Pure lard on a bun. Yuck! Last night on television I saw the Huell Howser (PBS) episode where he visited Langers in downtown L.A. and Johnnie's in Culver City. He was doing a comparison of the pastrami sandwiches. It was very obvious watching it that he much preferred the lean, dark pink Langer's pastrami over the fatty, greasy Johnnie's version -- even though he was too polite to openly state his disappointment on the air. His facial expressions and lack of praise for the Johnnie's pastrami were the exact opposite of what he displayed and stated when tasting the Langer's. Next time I have a craving for hot pastrami, I'm heading to Langer's. more

Worst Service I Have Ever Seen 9/28/2010

What's so unfortunate is that my family, friends and co-workers have enjoyed the food and service from Johnnies for many years. Yesterday while dining at Johnnies with a co-worker our experience was very unacceptable. Not only was the server very rude, the manner in which she provided service was beyond belief. Without much care, she flopped down our drinks spilling contents on the table, which she did not apologize for, nor did she clean it up. Upon the delivery my food I found used straw wrappings in the basket and underneath my sandwich wrapping. Instead of coming out to our table and checking on us to see if we needed anything she would look out the window. To top off this experience, she over charged us $10 for the meal. I will never eat at Johnnies again. If it were her purpose to make our experience horrible, trust me, she went above and beyond. I found the server to be quite pleasant with the non-African American customers. more

Best Pastrami In Town 5/27/2010

I have had many pastrami's in my life, but this is absolutely the BEST! Great prices, Great taste, Great atmosphere, and Great service. Bravo Johnnie's Pastrami in Culver City!!! Take the whole family, you will love it. Pros: Lean and Tasty Meat Cons: Cash Only no Debt/Credit Cards more

Great Pastrami Sandwiches 11/3/2009

if you love pastrami, check out Johnnie's in Culver City. The food is great, cheap, and fun. Either before or after a night of drinking in the area, nothing hits the spot like a Johnnie's famous pastrami! Pros: Great food, cheap prices more

Bad attitude, bad prices, ok pastrami 4/10/2009

It?s sad that I have to write this. This used to be one of my favorite places to get pastrami. However I think they have forgotten how to make it and how to be friendly to their customers. I don't mind paying for quality but $11+ for a 7inch sandwich and getting bad attitude from everyone behind the counter while getting ripped off. Well that?s just too much for me. I miss the old Johnnie's! Cons: service and prices more

Best in the West 4/6/2009

Johnnies is the palce to be for good pastrami sandwiches. I like the old fashion juke boxes at the tables. The open fire pit outside at night is great as well. The sandwiches are a bit pricey, but there wortth it. The pickles they serve are the best as well. This is the place to be for a good meal. Pros: Best Pastrami ever Cons: The Price more

Pastrami is as good as Weinerschnitzels 4/2/2009

If you like greasy pastrami then this is the place for you. If you like good pastrami then do not go here. I wouldn't recommend Domino's pizza for someone looking for good pie and wouldn't recommend this place for good pastrami. Grease is the word. If you like greasy pastrami then go crazy at this place. Pros: Pickle was good Cons: Pastrami is as good as Weinerschitzels more

WOW 3/25/2009

GREAT FOOD AND APMOSPHERE, AND FANTASTIC PICKLES, LITTLE ATTITUDE, BUT NOT BAD. YOU WILL BE STUFFED WHEN YOU LEAVE, AND YOU WILL BE BURPING PASTRAMI ALL DAY. Pros: REALLY GOOD Cons: PRICEY more

Johnnie's Pastrami & Titos Tacos are da Bomb 2/21/2009

Johnnie's & Tito's are almost next door to each other near the corner of Sepulveda BL. & Washington PL. in Culver City, CA. Exit the 405 fwy. at Venice/Washington BL. & you're there. Parking can be a challenge, but it's worth the inconvenience. I've been going to these restaurants for 45 years. I don't live in the L.A. area anymore, so I really miss Johnnie's & Tito's.... Whenever I'm in the L.A. area, here is what I do: I drop off my wife to wait in line at Titos. (the beef, bean, rice & cheese burritos are the best anywhere) After my wife has procured 2 burritos to go, she meets me at Johnnie's where I have already secured a nice table outside next to the fireplace. About this time, the waitress is bringing our greasy, gooey, delicious Johnnie's tacos & their signature original Johnnie's Chili Size.... (Johnnie's has never complained about us bringing in the Tito's burritos) Tito's is great, but lacks the classic '50's ambiance of Johnnie's. I like Johnnie's tacos better than Tito's also. As I recall, you can get a beer at Johnnie's, but not at Tito's. Before I leave Johnnie's, I usually order (to go) one of their big delicious pastrami sandwiches with onions, lots of mustard & extra Johnnie's pickles. more

Best Pastrami Place of All Time 10/2/2008

I have been eating at Jonnie's since I was a kid and I still crave it to this day. Even though I dont live in LA anymore, I have my dad ship me a good ol pastrami sandwich about twice a month. Its a little pricy but it is worth it. High recommended to tourists or anyone craving a really good pastrami sandwich. more

Okay, But Overpriced 7/4/2008

Johnnie's is certainly okay. But the price is far out of line for what you get. more
