can't recommend on any measure 1/29/2012

I was reluctant to make the trip and now I wish we would have gone to any other restaurant. We were a small but quiet group and it seemed like one big train wreck of an experience for each and every one of us. Here is what I must say: 1. A single small glass of house wine was over $13. It was $10 + tax + the bartender added gratuity at 20%. It is a giant rip-off. How can you do that to hosts, guests and patrons? 2. I ordered their signature larger cut of bacon-wrapped filet. It came out with a wood stick labeled ‘medium’ but I had ordered it well. I waited for the waitress to come back and she looked at me as if I was crazy for not cutting into it- I thought given the stick label maybe they accidentally switched mine with someone else’s and therefore was willing to wait to even touch it- well she then followed it up with “it is probably just the wrong stick.” Well it wasn’t. It was red, not even pink, on the inside. Butterfly it for all I care, just understand the commonsense that someone who doesn’t order meat with any pink won’t like it red. It went back and must have been put under a heating lamp or popped in the microwave, as it returned the exact same. The funny thing was it took forever and everyone else was over halfway done before I ever had the chance to start eating my entrée. Anyway, at this point you would have thought I ordered it blackened. I just ate the outside and left the majority of it, blood red, on the plate. No one ever came by; no one ever questioned the blatantly obvious. 3. Throughout the entire night a waitress would always chew her nails by the water ledge in the corner. All her fingers would literally go inside her mouth and then she would only stop when bothered. I was disgusted. This is unacceptable. Period. Where is the management?? 4. When we asked for checks there was still food we were working on. When the checks came we were literally still chewing and the plates were taken right from under us. We left upset. I know I won’t be back. None of us ladies will. We should have had a memorable night for the better, not worse. more

How does this place stay in business? 12/2/2011

A very overpriced restaurant that serves food that tastes like it came out of the freezer. We ordered the Charred Rare Beef appetizer. My husband said it tasted like what raw Steak-Umm probably tastes like. I couldn't eat it either. Just tasted like raw stringy meat. Awful. Then we each ordered the Caprese Salad. Another disappointment. Tomatoes were not fresh and the mozzarella cheese tasted like something from the Wal-Mart grocery. The dressing was terrible too. I've had better salad dressing at the Carolina Ale House. The bread that was brought out with the salad was like garlic bread that was pre-frozen and heated. I mean it was a complete joke. My husband ordered a glass of house red wine. Terrible. Wasn't fresh. Any small $3 box wine at the grocery store would have been better than the wine he ordered. We didn't order anything else. It is a million wonders that this place is still in business serving such poor quality food at outrageous prices. What is the deal with serving a bowl of salty olives with pits for one to ""snack on"" as you're waiting for the appetizer. Strange. I mean the whole experience was laughable. This was our first time and will be our last. more

Worst restaurant experience in a LONG time. 8/20/2011

Based on their website we expected JimmyV's to be comparable to Sullivans, The Angus Barn or Ruth Chris. In retrospect, we should have selected any of those restaurants. My husband took me the JimmyV's for my birthday. I ordered their rib eye medium rare. When it arrived the rib eye was only medium rare in the center, the rest was medium well. Sent it back. Changed to Prime Rib. I told the waitress that if it was not medium rare I did not want it. So someone other than the waitress brings a medium towards medium well slice of prime rib to the table and suggested that I just cut into it to see. Anyone that eats prime rib knows that if it is not the correct color on the outside the inside is no better. (if this was an exception rather than the rule for them that slice of Prime Rib would have never left the kitchen. In a good restaurant, regardless of their prices, poor quality food does not leave the kitchen.) I refused and sent it back. So I had creamed spinach for my birthday dinner. My husband ordered a New York strip medium and it was slightly over cooked so he ate his. The waitress did not pre-bus the salad plates nor did she remove my creamed spinach side dish. Never offered desert or coffee. After all of this the manager never came by to talk to us and they did not even comp my iced tea which again tells me this is the ""norm"" for them. more

Going downhill fast! 2/12/2011

My husband and I eat here 2-3 times per year, usually on the rare occasion that we can get a kid-free night. Last night, it was apparent that things are going downhill fast. The one highlight of the night was our server, Jess - she was great! We started with the hot crab dip which has always been our favorite. Not this time. It was tasteless and had a consistency like oatmeal or grits. It was like they replaced the creaminess with some sort of tasteless, gritty filler. When we asked someone what's changed, we were told that there's a new chef. Our server checked with the chef who said it must be because they were using different crab - but the crab on my husband's fillet oscar was very good, which leads us to conclude it's the new chef. It wasn't broke - he never should have messed with a good recipe. We ordered crab cakes as a replacement appetizer and those were good (another reason to believe that the crab was not the culprit in the unfortunately change to the crab dip recipe) though the portion size was tiny compared to most other things on the menu. My filet, ordered medium, arrived raw. After taking it back to recook it, It was still very undercooked. Not wanting to wait longer, I ate it. On its own, it was just OK. The bordelaise (sp?) sauce with mushrooms made the steak. The manager did credit the full amount of my fillet, which we appreciated. Still, I don't think we'll be going back. This used to be one of our favorite places, but it sounds like they've made some poor hiring decisions among their new kitchen staff. What a shame! more

Awful. Awful. Awful... Now. 11/22/2010

Years back when we lived close by, this restuarant was pretty good for the most part and we were okay with spending our money there.\r \r HOWEVER, a lot has changed in terms of quality and service (way down), management (is the manager 12?!), price (just ridiculous), decor (the one pro on the list)! The steak entrees are medicore at best, which is awful (again!) given their steep price increases and they really were their claim to fame. \r \r I wish I would have read the other recent reviews before I took company there recently. At least I know I won't promote the establishment to friends or business or ever be back! more

43 minutes to cook a filet!! 10/15/2010

This was my first visit to Jimmy V's Steakhouse. We did not have a reservation, but were seated quickly. Now I know why. The server took our order. Our salads were good. Our steak and pork chop arrived 43 minutes after we received our salads. Yes, I timed it. The server said the manager apologized for the delay. My filet was cold, not warm, but cold when it was served!! The broccoli side dish was not steamed properly and was too hard. The hollandaise sauce had chilled to the point it was slow to pour. My friend's meal was okay. I told the server who offered to have it warmed. Why? Warming would have made it well done. I ordered a medium filet and received a medium well filet. I went on-line to the contact us section on Jimmy V's Steak House website and sent in a comment. No one responded. I mailed letters to the management of Jimmy V's. No response. This would explain the poor showing at the restaurant. Please avoid this place. I know I will. more

Didn't honor reservation made through OpenTable 5/15/2010

Made reservation using OpenTable. When reached at the restraurant, we were told that 'it will take a while to get a table'. There was no clear explanation on why they accepted my reservation on the first place. This was on Saturday evening, and I had to drive around a lot to find a place to eat! Cons: Reservation more

Excellent Food & Service; Exquisite Party Room 5/5/2009

We had a rehearsal dinner for our son's wedding at Jimmy V's. Kathie, the manager, along with Abbe and staff made the whole evening a very memorable one. I received numerous emails from guests about the wonderful dinner they had. The food, staff , room's decor and special set up created such a warm ambiance in the beautiful room that we had for the evening. We had 56 guests who had only praises for the whole event! Our deepest gratitude to Jimmy V's ...... Paul & Nancy Meyers Pros: Steaks are superior with an extensive wine list more

Decent steak OK 11/17/2008

average steakhouse, prices high. Had better beef.\r Ok atmosphere, good service. Decent wine list, heavy on Cabs. Prefer more depth and regions. Overall ok experience,\r great for relatives. more

DONT GO HERE 10/3/2008

I have gone to many steakhouses in my day but I have to say I had the worst experience here.\r The service was okay and the food was WAY overpriced.\r My friend went with a co-worker earlier this year in February and left after being seated because he was appalled at the prices.\r I checked it out myself and felt as though I have had better steak at Ruth's Chris. more

Awesome food and great service 3/22/2008

I took my wife to Jimmy V's for her birthday, and we had a great time. The food was awesome. One of the few places that still service escargot. She had the fillet and I had the lobster. We both loved our meal. The baked potato was gigantic. They have the largest baked potato that I have ever seen. Service was great. We were very pleased with our waitress. We will be going back, and this time taking some friends. Pros: Great good, great service Cons: Make reservations more

Guaranteed Good Steaks 10/17/2007

This is one of those places that once you get hooked on to, will refuse to eat steaks anywhere else. The hospitality starts at the door as you are promptly greeted in a polite fashion, and never seems to end. All the staff are very knowledgeable and the quality of food and service is as high as I have seen in my many years of fine dining. Be sure to try the side items as they are often overlooked. Make sure you finish your meal with a shot of Louis XIII (this is one of the few restaurants in this area to carry what I consider a staple) and the dessert of the day. Pros: Winelist, Quality of steaks, Service Cons: Not Open for lunch more

Best Steak House in NC 10/13/2007

The best part about this place is the people. The food is great, the atmosphere is great...but it is the people that really make this an amazing place to have a steak. Everyone at this place is so friendly and they really know how to make the customer feel welcome. You can get a decent steak anywhere in Raleigh but this place makes you want to come back again and again. Pros: The People Cons: Hidden Location more

Good Food Good Bartenders 10/13/2007

Anyone that is looking for a place that has great food and a staff that knows your drink before you ask Jimmy V?s is your answer. Before I can sit down at the bar the bartender literally has my drink sitting in front of me. Make sure to try the filet, and the potatoes are a meal in themselves. My wife and I swear by Jimmy V?s and I will see you there. more

Great steak and an Unbelievable Staff 10/30/2006

I went to Jimmy V's on a date. We started at the bar where there were two bartenders to wait on us. One was full of personality and was great to talk to. The other was a little quiet for my liking but made a great drink. We were then escorted to our table. Our waitress was fantastic and explained anything on the menu and gave us great recomedations. Blackened scallops were absolutely amazing. Our entrees were cooked to perfection and the cottage fries and cream spinich were a treat. our dessert was homeade toffee crunch sundae. It was a fantastic dining experience except for that I never had another date again. I got caught observing the staff one too many times. But a fantastic dining experience none the less. I highly recomend this restaurant. Pros: Menu, Wait Staff, Bartender with Hair Cons: Tough to find location but worth the effort more

Overpriced gristle! 9/25/2006

One of the worst NY strips I have ever had. It was around $35, I ordered it Med. and it came out medium, however the cut was not good at all. I could not cut through it, there gristle down the middle, like I was served the scraps. For such a ""fine"" resturant, I would think the meat, the product of choice when going to a steakhouse would be prepaired with the greatest of care. I've had better steaks at Applebee's. The atmosphere was ok, however I was eating later in the evening and the staff was loud and obnoxious near the bar. I would have to say eat somewhere else friends. Pros: Staff uniforms were very high class Cons: Food quality and preperation lacked. more

You think the Barn has great service? Try this place... 8/10/2006

I have dined at Jimmy V's both personally and also regularly entertain business clients. This place is the real deal. I can count on them to impress clients each and every time. The waitresses are incredibly professional and excellent. The food is to die for. The steaks are consistently fantastic, and the is the one place that will make you cut into them with server present to make sure they are done exactly as you wanted. Don't be shy by sticking to the steaks, venturing off the beaten path will lead you to some of the best escargot you'll ever eat, as well as excellent chicken and pasta dishes. If it's your first time, order the baked potato with your meal and be prepared for a football sized behemoth on your table. This is the epitome of the classic american steakhouse. The dark decor is reminiscent of an old gentleman's club. The restrooms, however, could use a little sprucing up. The restaurant usually isn't packed or loud, making for a pleasant experience at your own pace. more

This restaurant is actually a non-smoking establishment (except for the bar area, which is completely separate from the dining room). The review that lists this restaurant as undesirable because of the smoking is outdated and erroneous. Also, the hours listed on this website are incorrect. The restaurant is open from 5pm-10pm on Mondays-Thursdays and from 5pm-11pm on Fridays and Saturdays. \r \r I have dined at this restaurant on numerous occasions and have received excellent service as well as fabulous food. I would highly recommend this dining establishment to anyone who enjoys great steak, a classy atmosphere and an extensive wine list from which to choose. All of the servers I have had the pleasure to meet have been extremely accomodating and anyone would be pleased with any of these wonderful people. Additionally, the management and bar staff have always treated me with the upmost of respect and I truly feel as if I am a part of the Jimmy V's family. ORDER THE BAKED POTATO WITH CREAMED SPINACH!!!! Pros: Service, Management, Steaks Cons: NOT A ONE!!!! more

I don't get it 6/7/2006

This place was touted as the best place steak house in the Triangle when I took 10 associates to dinner. First of all, great bar. Friendly and engaging bartender who made a killer martini. Food: Good seafood sampler with crab, scallops and shirmp cooked in a variety of ways. So far so good. Salad was basic but quite yummy. Now I'm thinking the entree is going to sweep me off my feet. When my rib-eye arrived, ""Oscar Style"" it was overcooked (not to my MR expectations of fleshy warm center), and chewey and bland. I sent it back. 20 minutes later I got my replacement rib-eye, which was cooked just right, but still tough and bland. The $14 ""Oscar"" option amounted to a few asparagus spears, some crab meat, and soapy tasting bernaise sauce. Desert was a mousse cake that was supermarket bakery fare, not that of a high-end restaurant. The waitress was appologetic about the meat, however, the $1000 tab was not even graced with the omission of the $28 bad steak. A few of my collegues thought their steaks were just O.K. Pros: Great martini Cons: Steak not aged more

Ask For Angela... 9/2/2005

Had a business dinner at Jimmy v's this week. Angela was my waitress, she did a great job. Very friendly and a good server! The restaurant was dead because of Labor Day weekend and gas prices but I left the restaurant feeling like I'd just had one of the best filets I've ever eated. Had the 12 oz filet, the bread was awesome, the crab cakes and shrimp were also excellent. Highly recommended. Cons: parking more
