Relaxing Escape 2/25/2006

The Japanese Friendship Garden is small, but the admission is inexpensive, and I've found that the benefit of visiting after a long, stressful week is priceless. This garden is kept in pristine condition, and the other statues and sculptures are kept to a minimum. This leaves the space uncluttered and allows for walking without such things getting in the way and interrupting the calming atmosphere. I go early in the mornings on Saturday to avoid the weekend rush. This is a charming little garden and a great alternative to visiting the park. more

visit a Japanese garden 8/20/2005

After walking by the Japanese Friendship Garden many time when I went to Balboa park, recently I decided to go in and have a look. By the name, you might think it's just a garden, but actually, it's just an area fenced off containing many interesting small items. Instead of the typical garden you would expect, this garden is more of the zen variety. They have an exhibit house inside that has rotating exhibits. Supposedly, in March they would have the seven tiered altar of the Japanese royal court on display. Other things I found interesting include a pond where volunteers were handing out fish food so you can feed the fish. bamboo trees, and bonsai trees. Worth a look if you haven't seen it. more

Little Japanese friendship garden 8/18/2005

The Japanese friendship garden in Balboa Park will perhaps disappoint people who buy the ticket to get in. Unless, you think the 3 dollars gate fee is for donation for the extension in the future. This garden is a bit too small. I took about 13 min. or less from going in and coming out. I took a look at their new plan from the web site, and found out that they will have a cherry grove. This means San Diegans will have a chance to see a great scene of cherry flowers blossom in spring one day. more

Nice, but small 8/14/2005

The Japanese Friendship Garden located within Balboa Park is small, but nicely kept series of plants and ponds. The admission is cheap, so your expectations should be kept low. If you've been to the Japanese Tea Gardens in San Francisco, you should probably not stop at this one. However, if you're looking for a nice stroll look into the Japanese Friendship Garden. more
