Best haircut and color ever!! 12/22/2006

After living in NYC for several years, I'd been to at least 5 different salons that people had recommended to me, and I'd never been happy with any of them. I always felt rushed, I felt as though the hairstylist didn't listen to me, and I never felt that excited over the results. When a bartender suggested Janet Rufin to me, I figured, ""Why not?"" It turned out to be the best hair cut and color I've ever received. Janet did my cut and my color, and she took such time, care, and precision, and she really listened to what I had to say. I never felt rushed or pressured; the entire experience was relaxing and enjoyable. I got tons of compliments on my hair, and months later when I was getting my hair done for a wedding the stylist said, ""Wow, whoever did your color last did an exquiste job, it looks terrific!"" I will definitely go back again!! Pros: Very skilled, never feel rushed more

I went to Janet Rufin's parlor for the first time a couple months ago. The service was great and I got a cut that I loved. I've already referred a friend there and the cut still feels good after two months. I love the fact that I can choose to either dry it straight or just wash and wear. I would definitely recommend this salon to others! more

Best Japanese straightening! 12/20/2006

If you want everyday to be ""my hair day"" without much care, this is the place you should go! I had Japanese hair straightening 6 months ago. Masako did a terrific job, and my hair became so shiny and straight. To my surprise, 6 months after, my hair is still the same - shiny and straight! I cannot even count how many people admired my hair, making my day :-) I am very happy with her work!! Pros: Service more

This place is fantastic! From the interior to the people who work here, there is such warmth in the atmosphere. The last time I went here, Janet cut my hair and I was amazed by her attention to detail. She noticed that my hair was uneven from my last cut (which was overseas) and that my hair was a little weak. She evened out my hair, gave it a great style, AND prescribed vitamin B complex and flax seed oil to help my hair. She is a doctor for hair! Janet is wonderful and so are the rest of the people who work here. I feel comfortable and trust everyone here with my hair. No longer do I get nervous when I get my hair cut--it's a great feeling.\r \r more

Oasis of tranquility, warmth, and professionalism 12/7/2006

I just love the place. It's beautiful and cozy inside. Has a garden in the back where I sometimes sit while my hair color is processing. You can quench your thirst on pitchers of iced, lemon water. You can order in lunch from their extensive collection of menus.\r \r The staff is warm, friendly, and down-to-earth, which you can't always find in a hair salon. Janet really knows her stuff when it comes to color (I haven't worked with the others on my color, but Janet oversees anyone else's work.) She always gives me a flattering cut. My experience with many hair stylists is that while they can give me a good cut, it doesn't always flatter my face. \r \r I have straight hair and so don't know how skillful the salon is with curly hair. more

Best highlights/color I've ever gotten! 12/4/2006

From someone who gets nervous whenever anyone touches her hair... believe me, this place is THE place to go for a comfortable atmosphere, friendly staff, and great haircolor. I never thought it'd be possible to get such great service without paying more than 500 dollars or having a banker boyfriend. Have patience though, my hair color took about 3 hours, but it was well worth it. My stylist, Karen, battled my overprocessed, dried-out, orangey and brassy medium brown highlighted hair, and gave me a beautiful dark brown color complete with subtle multidimensional highlights. I feel like I've got Jennifer Aniston's hair.. dipped in chocolate! Will definitely go back, and I plan on booking another appointment there for a haircut... hopefully it will turn out as stellar as my color! Janet is perfection 12/2/2006

It is very infrequent that I go to a place like Janet's to get my hair cut but after a friend recommended Janet I decided to try it out. Well, I have never gone anywhere else since. Why should I? I have finally found someone who really knows what the hell she is doing. Janet is a wonderful person who has a keen eye and knows exactly what works. For anyone wanting something special and something that you can't believe could be possible then you really need to make an appointment with Janet and find out just how good she is and how good you will feel afterwards. Finally! 11/30/2006

After looking for a good salon I think I have finally found one! I went to Veronica for a cut. I have long and extremely thick hair and I was tired of the limp look. Going to Veronica was AMAZING! She gave my hair bounce, volume, and body I never knew it had! Not only did she teach me a thing or two about my own hair she also was extremely patient and listened to my concerns. I will most definitely go back!! Pros: Ambiance, Staff, and Bagels! Cons: None more

Completely disappointed.... 11/30/2006

in my color and cut. I went there thinking, from the reveiws on City Search, that my cut and color would be amazing. Perhaps I put too much faith in City Search itself, but I've used this site for years. To my disappointment, I had the worst haircut and the color seems blah. I expect shiny hair (my hair is long and already in good health). I think that the reviews are from people who either have been going to Janet for a good length of time (as she has been at this same salon for years when it was owned and operated by someone different) or they haven't experienced a great NYC hair cut and color. Great atmposhere and helpful, sincere staff 11/29/2006

Loved the salon and the entire staff. From my initial call I was guided in the right direction for cut and color. They could not have been nicer or more helpful. I have had so many hair traumas since I started going to NYC salons and my hair became really damaged. You can tell they truly care and want to make a difference. Now I am happy I finally have a place that I can return to and tell all my friends about. \r Thank You! more

Well, as a haircolor regular I have been EVERYWHERE in the quest for beautiful, healthy-looking, shiny color. Finally, with Janet Rufin, I have found the answer.\r \r Janet took my overprocessed, fragile locks and after just two visits, I now have beautiful baby Hitchcock-blonde, natural-looking hair. \r \r The salon's cool and unassuming, chic yet comfortable. \r \r THANK YOU JANET! Janet Rescued My Hair! 11/24/2006

I should preface this by saying I am EXTREMELY particular about my hair, to the point of obsession. My standards are absurdly high. The stylist I had been going to for nine years moved out of the area. I went to the owner of that salon and had the worst hair cut of my life! A friend, who knows how obsessed I am about my hair, recommended Janet.\r \r She was fantastic!!!! She really listened to what I wanted and knew what would work to get my hair where we want it to go. I've already made my appointment to go back for highlights next week. In addition to being technically excellent, Janet is incredibly nice. I cannot recommend her highly enough. Speaking from Experience....and a good one at that! 11/18/2006

After many years of loyalty to Janet, I feel that I need to clarify for those who may have lingering doubts about this salon. I must say that Janet is one of if not the best colorist and stylist in the city. I have even referred my daughters and most of my family. The entire staffs care and consideration for all of the ""salon experience"" is wonderful and makes you feel comfortable as opposed to stuffy impersonal salons. The receptionist, stylists, and assistants are extremely qualified and Janet is solely responsible for their training and competance, and because of this I feel safe enough going to anyone of them for my services. Veronica's blowdrys make me feel like a MOVIE STAR! I HIIGHLY recommend everyone! Pros: Friendly Staff, No Sales Pressure, Always a Good time Cons: NONE! more

My hero! 11/15/2006

Janet is amazing!! She brought my hair back from a truly nasty dye job I got at another salon. Even with the extensive work required, the process was extremely gentle of my fragile hair. She gave me the exact shade of red I was trying for. Kevin also did an excellent job. I highly recommend both. Pros: great color fixing more

Japanese Hair Straightening 11/3/2006

I understand JR's Parlor is great for cuts and color but I go semi-annually to get my hair straightened by Masako. She is terrific.\r The first time I went to her she carefully examined my hair, which had been previously straightened in another salon. She showed me that it had been damaged and recommended I wait to have another treatment. I was so impressed by her honesty and her apparent expertise that I couldn't wait for my hair to grow out so she could re-do my treatment correctly.\r I wasn't disappointed. She is the mistress of her craft. She's straightened and cut my hair 3 times now. She is sweet, expert and reasonably priced for the care and time she puts into the job. I highly recommend her. more

After trying many hair salons both in Hoboken and New york City, I have finally found a home at Janet Rufin's Parlor. Jen is by far the best colorist/stylist I have ever been to and I enjoy her company so much, it feels like I am chatting at lunch with my girlfriends! The atmosphere is very hip (but not too hip) and the service is incredible! I highly suggest making a trip to Janet Rufin's Parlor... and definetly ask for Jen! Mary has made me feel really confident in the whole hair styling process. Since I was a baby I have always hated getting my hair cut, But now that I found Mary at Janet's Parlor I simply relax and sometimes i don't even pay attention to what she is doing I just laugh and walk out of the shop knowing my hair will look great for at least three weeks with almost no thoughts in the morning about it. Great haircut, no anguish! 10/17/2006

I went there on impulse on a really bad hair day for a haircut from Janet Rufin. She took the time for a thorough conversation, then totally fixed the shape of my very curly hair while keeping the length I had been happily growing. I still have the length, but the shaping made it look just the way I wanted. I save a lot of anguished time I had been spending to move the shape around every morning! It's a nice, mellow place.
