After a recommedation from a friend that Janet does the ""best brown"" I made an appointment and was very pleased! Janet takes the time to assess your overall appearance to determine the best hair color to complement your look. I had a single process with Janet and already made an appointment to go back for highlights. I also decided while I was in the salon that I needed a haircut. Some other salons might not be able to accomodate that on a busy Saturday afternoon, but Janet gave me to Jennifer for a cut and blowout and she did a fabulous job! I can't wait to go back! John is a great haircutter. he listens to what you want and tries to please. He is friendly and professional. Loran is a great colorist. both work in a relaxed atmosphere. all the staff are very professional and welcoming. beats all the uptown salons ive been to. more

Best highlights hands down! After futile efforts to find good highlights at a number of high-end Madison Ave. salons, I read about Janet's salon on CitySearch and thought that I would give it a shot. After my string of less-than-ideal Madison Ave. experiences, I was skeptical at best. I coudn't have been more pleasantly surprised! From the moment I walked into this cozy, charming salon, which feels more like a relaxing living room than anything else, to Janet's in-depth consultation with me, I immediately felt at ease. I walked out with some of the best highlights that I have ever gotten, which is a significant statement coming from somebody as admittedly picky as me. If you're looking for gorgeous highlights and a wonderfully enjoyable salon experience to boot, skip the Madison Ave/Fifth Ave. salons and head to Janet Rufin's Parlor. Her salon is a true gem! Loran is the best colorist and John is the best hair stylist in the city , they really listen to what you want and make recommendations that will have you looking fabulous. I love the service - the whole staff is friendly and welcoming! I feel spoiled when anytime I contact or visit Janet Rufin's Palor!!! I've been going to Janet for a few months now, and every time I get a terrific cut that flatters my face, highlights that complement my coloring and terrific service (love the wine on Saturdays!). Janet has also done a terrific job on my eybrows, and is super nice and easy to talk to. She's a perfectionist and pays attention to detail, so I know I will always come out of her chair looking really good. My naturally dark brown hair was never meant to be blonde, but somehow, my usual salon messed it up and turned it into a brassy, yellow mess. I went to Janet after reading about her on Allure and Citysearch. My highlights took over four hours (she also had to wash, tone, re-dye, and wash my hair again), but my hair color has NEVER looked better. Even after almost 3 months, my roots blend with the base color, and my highlights are subtle but not invisible. AMAZING. I'm going back again this month, and I'm so excited!!! I've gone to Janet Rufin's Parlor twice and seen different apprentices each time to give me natural blonde highlights. They're always really attentive and do exactly what you want. The service is friendly and polite and the atmosphere is relaxed. In a city where salons can charge you over $200 for highlights, it's amazing to get such great quality at a discounted rate of $70! Cons: Highlights taking close to 4 hours is the only downfall. more

I highly recommend Janet Rufins Parlor! I have lived in the city for over a year and have been unable to find anyone capable of coloring bright blonde hair (either they made it too dark, or orange). I had tried most of the famous salons in Manhatten and still wasnt happy. It almost came down to flying back to the west coast to get good highlights! A friend recommended Karen at Janet Rufins and I have never been happier. She did a wonderful job, and it turned out exactly as i wanted it. I wrote a review about two months ago exclaiming over the quality of the haircut I got from Eugene and the color work Janet Rufin did, but complaining about sticker shock and the time it took to get this wonderful look done. I didn't know much about salons in New York at the time, and really mistook the professionalism and perfectionism of Janet's staff for coolness. I was wrong, and want to say so. I haven't had so beautiful a cut or color since. You really do get what you pay for at this excellent salon. \r \r So, I apologize for my earlier review. It was an ignorant thing to do. All I can say is WOW. Janet Rufin really is the best colorist in NYC - without the attitude! And the customer service is wonderful, so different from other salons I've visited in the city.\r \r I went to Janet Rufin's Parlor for the first time a few weeks ago after my regular salon/stylist couldn't seem to get my blonde color right for my skin tone. I had gone from dark brunette to blonde about 6 months earlier and it was just too yellow for my taste. Janet took a lot of time to really study me and formulate a plan for both color correction and new highlights/lowlights - the end result was amazing color that perfectly suited my skin tone -- it looked completely natural and I have received a number of compliments since my appointment. Janet also made sure I had the right conditioning treatments so that when I walked out of her salon, my hair was in better shape than when I had arrived. And on top of all that, the customer service at Janet Rufin's Parlor is great. The receptionist was very friendly when I called to make a last minute appointment and, because I had to work late, Janet let me come for my color treatment an hour later than normally allowed. This meant that she and her assistant had to stay later than normal to finish. Despite the late hour, Janet (and her lovely assistant Christine) worked diligently to ensure my hair color and conditioning was done to perfection. They really went all out - even for a new client like me.\r \r If you're trying to achieve the perfect hair color, look no further - Janet is a miracle-worker. In my experience, she could be charging twice her current rate. For color in New York City - expert color applied with a friendly, informative attitude - Janet Rufin's Parlor is a real bargain. more

It has been over a month since Karen did a full set of highlights on my hair, and I'm still in love with it! Honestly, everyone at the salon was so very friendly and my hair looks fab - what more could you want? I highly recommend Janet Rufin's Parlor. more

On a leisurely stroll around my neighborhood I was inspired while passing this incredibly cozy and chic salon(how did they mix the two so perfectly?). Luckily they were able to take me within a half an hour and i relaxed sipping wine, nibbling dried fruit and flipping through magazines. My stylist, Jennifer was extremely thorough, and actually ended up taking off less than an inch as i had desired. Amazing!!! I have been trying to grow out an agressive bob for the last several months and was terribly frightened that i'd be hacked despite my please. But Jennifer was fantastic!!!! After four months of growing out, the cut still looks awesome and i'm heading back very soon for another delightful experience. Pros: interesting and attentive staff, not overzealous and fake. lovely atmosphere. talented folks! I happened into Janet Rufin's Parlor and have finally found the perfect salon! The color Janet created for my long hair is so glorious and so natural that many of my friends don't even realize I have it colored! Veronica's haircut and care of my hair are so thoughtful and in keeping with what I want, there is absolutely no push for a stylists' agenda over the wishes of the client, just thoughtful advice when needed. And perhaps as important, the overall atmosphere of the place is warm and caring and friendly... my whole nervous system relaxes as\r I walk through Janet's door, knowing I am in good hands and will leave happy and looking great! more

I had my hair highlighted and cut at this small salon about 2 weeks ago. I am very picky about my hair and after a previous bad experience at another ""highly rated"" salon, I was hesitant to try again. But after walking in and having a consultation with Karen (the colorist), I made an appointment. Overall, both Karen and Veronica (the stylist) did a fantastic job. They both listened to what I wanted and my hair turned out beautifully. The blonde highlights are not too blonde and the cut took some much needed weight off my hair! I've been having this process done for 5 years now and Masako is the best in the city. She patiently works on each strand of hair ensuring that is protected and cared for. The salon itself is stylish, modern, and simple. The staff provided refreshments and offered help for cabs and anything I needed. Overall - highly recommend both the salon and Masako for japanese straightening. Pros: technician skill Cons: none! more

John is an artist in the true sense of the word. He knows how to cut hair to make the most out of your features. He is honest and knows his craft and what will work with your features. I was referred to Loren by a friend who's been using her for over 5 years. I was satisfied with my own colorist, but thought I would risk cheating on him to have a consultation with Loren. We had a meeting of the minds and agreed on how we would revamp my existing color. I appreciated her honesty and tact. She didn't put down my previous color, but made suggestions on how to enhance it and really make it pop. The consultation turned into a full head of highlights that weren't just satisfactory - they absolutely amazed me. While scrolling around these reviews I noticed a rather negative one. It warned to take positive reviews with a grain of salt, because Janet Rufin's Parlor offers a 20% discount for writing them. No grain of salt needed for this review because Loren does not participate in this discount program, so you can bet that all of her glowing reviews are genuine. Loren is that good. more

Loren at Janet Rufin is the best colorist in NYC. Not only for her expertise, but her honest advice. Over 8 months ago I booked an appointment with Loren and walked in with a photo of Kate Beckinsale and said ?This color please.? Loren took one look at my then black colored hair with bleached blond ends and said, ?Don?t use color treated shampoos, get a few haircuts and come back in 6 months.? Boy am I glad I listened to her. After seeing her for a second round of highlights this past March I am pleased to say this is the best hair color I have ever had. Loren rocks and I would recommend her to anyone.
