Best

Personally I like it better up at the bar in the main room rather being in the indoor side room to the right or even in a booth. Great apps, deliiiiiicious, too delicious really...

Worst

I went to this restaurant with a large group of people for a friend's birthday party. The service was good for our large group but the atmosphere was very, very loud. The food w...

best fried chicken and service 7/24/2006

i have been going to james beach since they opened.i have to say the food gets better and better, and service is the best with no attitude. We ordered the fried chicken special which was amazing and few glasses of wine on our waiter nino's suggestion which was great as well.We live down the street from james beach and now will come more for the food and nino's wine knowledge since we are big vino's.Thank you james beach and see you next week for dinner. Pros: food, wine, service Cons: gets too loud more

great food and astounding service 7/21/2006

i had one of the best meals at james beach recently. The service was amazing, thanks to our waiter nino who was on top of everything from suggesting wine to making recommendations on food as well.We cannot wait to go back to james beach for dinner again with friends. The crab cakes are the best crab cakes in los angeles, oysters very fresh and above all the ambience rocks here. Pros: food and great service more

Hot waiters, bad food 7/16/2006

Go there for the help, not the food. The only thing that is good there is the key lime martini-- nothing else was even worth eating. The chocolate lava cake taste like un-sweetened chocolate. Go there for drinks-- not food Pros: Key Lime Martini & Staff Cons: everything else more

Really cool bar 6/6/2006

I love this bar. I love this resteraunt. What more is there to say? more

Great Restaurant 3/21/2006

Sure, it's crowded on weekends after 10 PM when it becomes one of LA's most popular bar scenes, but before 10 it's a great place for dinner or brunch and it's not jammed. The menu is well balanced with lots of choices, and there's over 20 wines by the glass from their award winning list. It's civilized but not pretentious. I'll be back. Pros: rack of lamb, real mojitos, hip crowd after 10 Cons: only one pool table, no lunch on Tuesdays, hip crowd after 10 more

LOUD 8/15/2005

Great place for ""BabyBoomers"" that are single or older men looking for younger ladies. Not great for food or romantic dining! Do have a drink and the cookies. PASS on the food and stay like I said for the bar scene! LOUD, Crowded, Smoke filled ""patio"" bar, a little pricey on drinks. Loved this place back in early 2ooo and have seen the scene go down in quality. Very Middle Aged/White male scene! You know what I mean? Use to be a ""FRIENDS"" (as in the show) scene, now a divorce male scene. Still some ""Wanna-be"" Producers floating around. Pros: Cookies, Valet Parking, 3 bar rooms Cons: Loud, Crowded, Smoke!!! more

Great Food, service is OK 3/7/2005

Went here on a Saturday night - great atmosphere. We were there for a late dinner, so the bar crowd starting rolling in. Definitely a more mature scene which was nice and kept the noise level at a comfortable level. Food was great - everyone ordered seafood. I highly recommend the seared scallops - and the wasabi mashed potatoes are a must. I will definitely come back. Our service was a little slow - they didn't seem to be adequately staffed for a Saturday. Pros: Food, Ambience, Bar more

nice beach area eatery... 8/16/2004

business is actually quite slow for lunch at James Beach, which was completely fine w/ me & my siblings like Friday afternoon. this way, we didn't have to wait for our table, and the waitress was extremely atentive. the food was very delicious, however, the price is just a tiny bit overpriced. no complain from me at all thou since it's expected for that price w/ that sorta nice beachy setting. Pros: food, service, setting more

Delightful surprise 8/13/2004

What a nice surprise from the usual scene! The mojitos were wonderful - a much sweeter variety than what most of LA serves - and the crowd was friendly and talkative. Pros: mojitos, friendliness Cons: , drink prices more

perfect place for big parties 5/4/2004

a great brunch place right by the beach. weve been there several times and luckily have always ordered right. i guess we should eventually try it for dinner. more

For late night hanging out 4/1/2004

This is one of the few places in Santa Monica open late even in the weekdays..go there to have some drinks, the margaritas and the martinis are good and big in size. If you are hungry order a dessert (the chocolate mousse is great) or dine across the street at Canal Club. The food is average here. The atmosphere is cool though and the beach decor makes you feel like you were at a beach party. Pros: open late at night, popular place, good drinks Cons: , overpriced food more

Nice Atmospeher Sub Par Food & Service 3/4/2004

Great atmosphere but the Ahi Tuna was not good and the sauce was way to salty returned for a redo and they still could not get it right, told the waiter 2nd time was still not good and he was not accomodating. When older gentleman at the bar have to come over to our dinner table and make comments like ""Can we help you with the bill?"" the check came as we were figuring the split between us girls, we just thought it made for another low class evening being armored by a man who should be at home watching Lawrence Welk. more

Great standby 2/15/2004

Whenever I want a casual evening out with friends and good food, this is the place. And the location could not be better. I love to take out-of-town visitors here because it's so LA without even trying. Pros: Location, Reasonably priced, Fun scene more

Schizophrenia... 11/4/2002

James Beach seems to be two different places - one I love, the other I've tried to forgive, but just can't any more. The good side is the bar - either bar. Service is fantastic, drinks are great, and atmosphere is lively. The other James Beach, the table dining version (how this can be so different I don't understand) has now been a nightmare too many times to ignore. The only thing they seem to be able to do consistently there is screw up - either on the service or food. I live in Venice, I wished I liked James Beach more, but after my latest trip there - wherein they only bothered to tell me that they were out of the special I'd ordered as they served the rest of my 10 person party their meals - I give up. more

great hang out & food 9/5/2002

3 bars in 1!... outdoors, indoors and back bar with pool table. Great bar to drink and meet a wide-array of interesting people. Pros: good crowd, fun, good food Cons: weekends crowded more

Fun Crowd and good eats 8/28/2002

I was surprised by the funky crowd jame's Beach attracts after dinner. A very shi-shi LA type fun crowd. The food here is very good as well! Pros: crowd, great food, ambiance Cons: wait in line, wait at the bar more

The name says it all 6/26/2002

Although I've been tempted a number of time to try the menu, i've only ever gotten past martinis and Glasses of wine. Always a good crowd although it can favor the close knit group out on the town versus a great place to meet new folks. go here with a crew of gals and guys and you're in for some big fun. ...pool table is fun if you can get on it. more

Three rooms depending on how you're feel 6/12/2002

James' Beach is a great place to hang for any mood you're in. Pool table in the back for hangin' with friends, covered outdoor area with lots of trees and plants for a comfortable feeling or the main dining area with booths and clean white walls. The food is a good value and it's great being able to get late night eats. The weekends are touch-and-go with the crowd; locals are turned into weekends from the valley. It gets a little cheesy but overall, fun and worth the experience, if you don't mind the attitude from the bartenders. Pros: Great Atmosphere, Good food, Hidden Gem Cons: Cheesy Weekends, Crowded more

Just for drinks 6/10/2002

Although there's two sides to the dining area offering a pretty varied menu, the tuna tartare and sauteed spinach (accented with pine nuts and golden raisins) are the only food items that have ever left an impression on me. Still, James Beach offers plenty of atmosphere, singles-mingling and good wines by the glass. Back room (with pool table) is a great spot to rent out for private parties but a drag when its closed due to someone else's function. This is a great date place that converts to a bustling bar after the dinner crowd clears out. But stick to the aps. Pros: Best tuna tartare more
