the best bar, period 1/13/2010

At first glance, there's nothing absolutely special at JJ Foley's. So why the heck do I go to this bar at least three to four times a week? Basically, the whole experience is great. It's real, authentic, and family-owned. All the bartenders are fantastic and I never feel as though I'm different even though I am not exactly white-collar office-working high-roller. People are always talking about the South End location and raving about it and its trivia nights and awesomeness, but to be honest, the downtown location is as nitty-gritty genuine as you're gonna get. This bar has my business for life. Folks, you are never going to find anything as authentic as this. Pros: the experience Cons: looking for something fancy for date night? not it more

the only real bar in the area 11/13/2008

An awesome no bar with no pretense or posturing- just cheap beer, great food and decent people. Pros: cheap, real Cons: bathroom gets full quickly, second bar is standing only more

Order the steak tips! 9/2/2008

The food I'd give 5 stars. The clam chowder was heavenly and the steak tips were... well, there are no words for how delicious they are. My boyfriend normally puts steak sauce on everything, but the steak tips were so delicious that he actually held back on the A1. Believe me, they have to be very special for that to happen. I had the meatloaf, which was really good as well. Pros: food Cons: people, beer variety more

Defending a great place 3/1/2007

The three people who posted before me, must have never been there to say what they said. The food is great, not completely my type of a place. I am more of someone who prefers a DJ to an old jukebox. The staff are good guys which explains why the place is always packed after work. If one of the owners get convicted, then of course boycott the place but in America we are still innocent until proven guilty. How do we know the plaintiff wasn't completely hammered and has no idea what actually happened. Pros: Great prices, they stay open later than they have too. Cons: Just another Irish pub-not much different from all the other bars in Boston more

Hmmmm... doesn't feel right at anytime. 12/6/2006

I was overcharged more than what the menus stated. The staff is barely friendly to a new face. Perhaps a frequent customer gets better service, but I won't be going back. Cons: Unfriendly staff. more

CHEAP DRINKS. Busy after 11pm. On-line Jukebox so you can download any song ever recorded. 9/26/2006

Its a Cop Bar so they don't close down at exactly 2am. Its usually a little later than that. Huge Irish visitor get together more

My Favorite Boston Bar Because ... 11/23/2005

I met my wife in J.J. Foley's on St. Patrick's Day, so it will always have a special place in my heart. more

Foley's? Heck yea! 8/13/2004

all i can say is that no matter when you go to Foley's, it is one of the greatest pubs in boston. i've spent many a night for many a year in Boston pubs, and Foley's has it all. not only are the bartenders great people to hang with, Foley's boasts one of the best jukebox in Boston. and that in itself makes the evening worth while. so if you like to drink, and like to throw some pixies/costello/clash on the jukebox, Foley's is your place. Pros: cheap beer, great atmosphere, top-notch jukebox more

A Real Deal Boston Hangout 4/13/2004

No Ally McBeal's here.....No Glamor Boys either. A Boston ""Cult of Personality""! Fantastic Bar staff. An Eclectic mix of true urbanites. Pros: Great Pint more

Doctor's Orders 1/17/2003

As a busy psychopharmacologist, I demand excellent service and an expertly mixed cocktail. As a son of blue collar South Boston, I demand an atosphere free of trendiness and pretense. Foley's has been delivering both since I was a pre-med student. So after work, make sure to take your meds at Foley's! more 1/9/2003

A good time for a great price. Also one of the best juke boxes around. Pros: Cheap, Friendly people Cons: too smokey more

X marks the Spot 12/25/2002

JJ Foley's is da bomb! Excellent place to drink - I mean, underthetable drinking! Prices are reasonable and it is very ""Irish"" - more so than Purple Sham... but not as much as Black Rose... bartenders and other staff are the most beautiful, friendly people you'd meet in the area. Crowd is mostly couriers on break, young urban profs, singers, songwriters, and even your occasional more

The Postman Always Rings Twice 12/12/2002

Your reviewers certainly weren't there the same times I've been there. (Noon-three). There are lots of non-suit types mostly mailmen sloshing down lots of beers before returning to their routes. Good place to drink though I don't recommend the food primarily because the service is so slow. Of course if I had a three hour lunch it wouldn't matter how slow the kitchen was. Pros: Good Drinks, Amiable help Cons: Very slow food servic more

AWESOME JJ 12/12/2002

I love this bar! It's a really nice place to go after you have been clubbing and you don't want to go home. It's fun! Pros: Crowded, Fun, Average Prices more

Fun! 12/11/2002

They have best jukebox I have seen! And the bartenders are great. more

Like Coming home 11/20/2002

Foley's is a wonderful place for people looking for a good atmosphere and friendly service. The bar has the same variety of beers and drinks as most in the area. What makes Foley's special is the people who work there, and the crowd that hangs there. Whether you go in on a weekday or a weekend , there is always the feeling of coming home. and if that's not good enough for you , i don't know what is ..... Pros: convenient location, good people, fun Cons: maybe just too fun more

Very Good 11/6/2002

I am new to Boston area, and was hanging out near Downtown crossing and spotted this one. The Bartender was very friendly, and what I thought would be a gulp n' go lasted 3 hours. Met some interesting people. Very good for after office chill outs. Great juke box set Pros: Drinks, Jukebox, Location Cons: Small, No pool tables more

Horrible Time 8/28/2002

The atmosphere was terrible, the service was horrible, all the employees were rude and had bad tempers. The locals that gathered there did not behave well at all. There were smelly, foul mouth, disgusting people from wall to wall...stay away if you know what's good for you. more

Best Bar hands down!! 7/26/2002

THis is without a doubt the best BAr in Boston and has been for years. Great staff, friendly atmosphere, not full of hair spray, cologne and lipstick. Pros: Great jukebox, Great Beer Selction, Great Staff Cons: Only open until 2 more

Cheap, but unoriginal 7/24/2002

This bar is your run of the mill, average place. It's aesthetics are spartan, but if you are just looking for a place to sit and have a cold pint without breaking the bank, this is the place for you. Don't come here looking for a place to see and be seen. more
