J. CHAPA HERNANDES IS A MASTER JEWELER! 12/20/2010

All the Jewelry stores in Bellevue pretty much have the same old stuff, however there is a very unique Jewelry store on old Main street in Bellevue that has stood the test of time. Jose has been designing and making custom Jewelry in his beautiful shop for over 30 years! You will not see anything like his designs anywhere else. He has customers from all over the country, he doesn't even need to have a retail store, however, he seems to love interacting with people in person and seeing the smiles on their faces when he shows them the finished piece. He is a true artist, and great art takes time. I have read some of the reviews and I think that some people don't understand that an artist cannot be rushed, this is not shoe repair, this is true art! Be patient and you will have one of a kind jewelry that now one else has. Jose isn't arrogant, he just knows his stuff and sometimes that clashes with people wanting it right now. He takes his time and creates masterpieces. Even if you just have something repaired, he will do it right and you will be so pleased that you will come back time and again. My family has been coming to Jose's shop for nearly 30 years and consider him part of the family. Stop by and see him and you will understand that he is a very talented artist and a fun guy to work with to create truly unique jewelry. more

A Sad (and Scary) Experience 9/18/2010

Seems like an eternity ago, my husband-to-be and I went to Jose to get our wedding rings. Then - like now - we were amazed at the wonderful quality of his work. He has always been a true artist, and we appreciated his time and care, working with us to design our rings. And the rings were gorgeous, and garnered many compliments over the years.\r \r To us, this was an exciting time in our lives, and Jose played a big part in that. \r \r Fast forward a few kids and 15 years... My ring was quite small and needed to be enlarged. I didn't trust anyone but Jose to do the job. I brought it in one Saturday and he said the ring would be ready that week. He told me to come in on Thursday; when I came by, the center stone was missing. He said it definitely would be ready the next day; when I came by after work, the stone was still missing. I was told that the ""stone polisher"" hadn't returned the gem yet.\r \r My family then went on vacation for three weeks. Upon returning, I called Jose and he said the stone still was at the polishers, but it would be ready next week. I called back the following week, and I was told the same thing: next week.\r \r The following week, my husband called on Tuesday; no one answered at the store. Starting to get tired of the runaround, and suspicious of the store being closed on a Tuesday, I crazily thought that, perhaps, Jose was screening his calls. I told my husband to call Jose from his personal cell phone. Sure enough, Jose answered the call right away! When my husband asked what the status was of the ring, Jose went into an obscenity-laden tirade, saying he wished me and my husband never had entered his life, and he threatened to ""come over and beat up"" my husband, twice! My husband said he felt his heart beating out of his chest, he was so upset and taken aback by this conversation! It was so upsetting and unprovoked. It was like Jose had snapped. We conferred with a police friend, wondering if we should press criminal charges (threats of bodily harm), and civil charges (breach of contract, as we still did not have our ring back). Most disappointing of all is how sad we felt, that someone who we respected and admired, and who we had very warm memories of, had treated us. At this point, I just wanted my ring back.\r \r The next day, Jose called my husband and, in the nicest voice, informed him that the ring was ready to be picked up. It was like nothing ever happened, and the earlier threatening conversation never even took place!\r \r We went the following day to get the ring.\r \r I thought long and hard before deciding to post this. Jose's work is truly unique and beautiful, and if you are purchasing jewelry from him, I doubt you would be disappointed. But if you need a piece serviced in any way, beware. He never once called us with an update, and he misquoted his lead-time by nearly 8 weeks. And there's the most disturbing issue of his sudden tirade and threats to us. This has been a very sad experience for my husband and me, and I just hope in time that, when I look at my ring, I remember the happy time when we were first designing it, and NOT this recent, upsetting event.\r more

Terrible Customer Service 2/27/2010

Very disappointing experience. My husband bought some beautiful earrings for me from Mr. Hernandez and one of them broke when it caught in my hair about 3 weeks after we bought it. It took a few weeks for me to go back and I asked him to replace the missing piece. He bragged about how no one else could fix it because he'd made them himself. (Note - it broke after two wearings and he made it himself.) So, he said he would fix it and I should come back the next week. I called to see if it was ready and came down when he confirmed it was ready. But it wasn't ready. He asked if he could solder the two pieces together instead of recreating the connecting piece that had broken off. I said, ""no"", I wanted the pearl to dangle just like its mate. So, he told me to come back again in a couple of days. I gave him some extra time, but it wasn't ready the week after that, nor the week after that. I called each time before driving over, but after 5 weeks and 5 visits, I said I'd take it somewhere else. And he got really snippy. He said I didn't understand how busy he was and how he had customers waiting 7 years for him to find perfect matching stones and my project was too little to bother with. My project? He'd made it. After two months it was finally ready. He said he'd ""rushed it through"" and he certainly did. He soldered the two pieces together instead of matching the finding to my existing earring. So, I ask myself, did he really create that first joint, or did he buy it elsewhere and found himself unable to copy the functionality of that first earring. I am very particular about the custom jewelers which whom I do business. This was a small job and as he couldn't handle this without causing me to make 7 unnecessary trips, I'm certainly not going to trust him with my more serious commissions, nor those of my clients. Pros: Downtown Bellevue Location Cons: Miserable Custom Work more

One Great Jeweler! 11/30/2009

J Chapa Hernandez is certainly a knowledgeable jeweler. After 35 years of ""wedded bliss"", my husband decided that I should have a larger diamond. We did a considerable amount of research (How to Buy a DIAMOND by Fred Cuellar, internet diamond info and trips to a few big name jewelers.) We then visited J Chapa Hernandez. We told him what we were looking for and he showed us several beautiful stones. We selected one of them and he mounted it in my existing setting. Superb workmanship. Definitely a five-star operation! Pros: honest, knowledgeable, artistic........ more

The most artistic jeweler in the NW! 11/29/2009

My husband and I spent a great deal of time looking for a jeweler who could create beautiful custom wedding jewelry to comemorate our marriage. JCH's pieces stood out as the most strikingly beautiful and timeless. We were incredibly impressed with JCH's knowledge and patience through the design and production stages of our pieces, which included both of our wedding rings, as well as my earrings and necklace. They are not only the most beautiful pieces of jewelry that I've ever seen, but they are unique and one-of-a-kind. During our many visits to JCH's gallery, we noticed that there were often other customers lingering around who simply came in to visit - sitting around sharing small appetizers, chatting and laughing. The laid-back atmosphere in his gallery makes for a very comfortable place to enjoy and browse his jewelry cases. JCH is a rare gem of a jeweler. We enjoyed working with him very much and will be reminded of his creativity every time we look at our wedding rings. We will continue to purchase all of our jewelry from him and recommend him to all of our friends and family. If you're looking for a custom jeweler, we highly suggest JCH. Pros: Custom jewelry, comfortable atmosphere, convenient parking more

Rob V.needs more than just help 10/4/2009

Rob V. sounds like he was trying to impress his fiance with champagne on a beer budget, and should have gone to Zales instead of a Master Jeweler who once taught university level precious stones and also has a very impressive array of stones here in Bellevue. Too bad that Rob V. mistook superior knowledge to that of arrogance, but then one cannot educate a square rock to skip.. Pros: Honesty-Informative-Wealth of Knowledge Cons: None more
