Best sushi and more in Astoria 2/15/2010

This is the best deal in Astoria- the freshest sushi, creative rolls, lots of options, great seafood soup, best potstickers as advertised. Duck and fish entrees are great. Inexpensive quality sake options. Highly recommend! Pros: Fresh sushi, great alternatives, fantastic service, inexp. more

sushi...sooo fresh and the best 1/8/2010

Ive been dining at various sushi restaurants for 35 years from manhattan to Montauk. I am not an expert by any means on the aspects of sushi, and being 48yrs of age.. . I dont get very excited about ..well anything at all anymore..but this restaurant is fantastic.! The artful presentation and generous portions of their inventive rolls, sushi, sashimi and other asian inspired dishes were not only delicious but were beautiful as well. Service was exemplary as well as the atmosphere. I was so pleased with the fine cuisine I had them cater two parties in the past three months..my friends were in awe of the coolest sushi platters. Everyone loves JJ'S Pros: the most delicate and fresh sushi and sashimi .. more

Always Great 8/12/2009

The Astoria Roll, the spicy tuna rolls, spicy salmon rolls, the dumplings with creamy wasabi sauce, gyoza, blackened tuna rolls, etc....all extremely good-when I'm good, this is what I reward myself with. You will not be disappointed! Pros: Fresh, flavorful, inventive Cons: Can't think of any more

Best Sushi in Astoria 7/27/2009

The sushi is fresh and delicious. The rice is cooked to perfection. Even dishes that I've been turned off of in the past from other restaurants I will eat here. The ambiance is also A++ and it is very clean. more

Nice ambiance 7/18/2009

We went for a lunch on a hot saturday afternoon. There were not a lot of people in the restaurant. Food was good but the service was pretty slow considering there was hardly anyone there. Who knows - maybe it was an off-night. I'd try it again Pros: Ambiance Cons: Service more

Disappointing sushi 2/25/2009

I had a sushi lunch special that includes 5 pieces of sushi- one of them had imitation crab!!! I have never seen that anywhere. The other sushi fishes were tough and not the best quality. I am disappointed and I am not going back there for sushi. Pros: Cheap lunch special Cons: Bad sushi more

Answer to: French Food??? 8/16/2006

I am a ordinary customer there with my husband. We love JJ's scallops california roll with the creamy sauce on top and edemame potstickers. Those two dishes explains a touch of French. Because the owner, JJ, was graduated from the French Culinary Institute. She uses the French cooking techniques in her dishes and thats why its called fusion. Chow! Pros: thumbs up Cons: thumbs up, yummy more

sushi in Astoria 8/9/2006

My sister and I often pass by this place and have been meaning to check it out - last (weekday) evening we did and were pleasantly surprised. The miso soup was hot, not lukewarm like other restaurants; the salmon/tuna rolls melt in your mouth; and udon soup came in those traditional pots, also piping hot and no skimping on the chicken and overloading the carrots, if you know what i mean. The noodles could have been cooked less though. 2 classic dishes for under $30 after tax and tip. Service was very attentive and efficient too. Definitely going back and bringing girlfriends next time! Pros: real sushi in Astoria Cons: too dim, cramped if too many people more

They serve sushi here 4/8/2006

JJ's is a quality sushi place in Astoria Queens where you can get inventive and delicious rolls as well as a nice assortment of sushi pieces that are tasty in you mouth. The place is a little tight and can get busy on weekends, but they do take reservations if you have a large group. I've only ever had excellent service here, friendly and prompt, well worth the 18% gratuity that most people consider the standard tip in our troubled economy. But I guess since fellow user reviewer emeril13 is after all famous tv chef Emeril he shouldn't need to tip that much, just a friendly BAM! and all should be pleased. Pros: good food, good service Cons: little cramped more

Rude Service 1/25/2006

It started out to seem like an ok night but the service was lacking and it's not like the place is huge. Then the food was ok no out of this world food. Check time comes and the waitress takes it and comes back and says was there a problem gratuity is 18% well I felt I had left a generous tip which I usually do but apparently it wasn't enough. So I won't be going back. SO if you do go remember on $100 check they expect $18 or more as a tip. Cons: Small Place, Cramped Seating, Lousy Service more

HUGE price increase and smaller portion 10/16/2005

They recently raised the price and made the portion much smaller. They still taste awesome, but charging Manhattan price is not justifiable. I?ve gone there for over 3 years, used to be very low key and relaxing place to dine and drink, now I always feel rushed out. Granted so many good places in Astoria has gone out of business or jacking up price as many folks from Manhattan moving in last 2 years, but I just wish JJ will either lower the price back to where they were, or make the portion the same size before. Because of the two major negatives, I give 3 stars. Pros: Excellent fusion food, good service Cons: HUGE price increase, smaller portion more

Best Kept Secret! 10/2/2005

I was in ABSOLUTE heaven when I ate here with my husband. Food was top notch -- fresh, creative, modern, and wonderful, friendly service. I went based on the two reviews here on citysearch and now there are three. What we ate: the edamame pot stickers, crispy duck salad, seared tuna, Phonenix roll, and special of the day which I will be dreaming about forever -- Lobster Roll. JJ Restaurant is one of those hidden gems that you have been looking for. I am so happy it is here in Astoria!! No more trips to the East Village for Sushi. more

Great sushi! 9/6/2005

This is some of the wackiest yummy sushi I've ever had! I recommend only getting the Chef's special rolls... there's no point in bothering with the traditional sushi rolls, they are pathetic compared to the delicious wonderful specials. I really enjoyed the Tropical Roll 2. Service was excellent- couldn't believe that one woman was handling the entire restaurant... she was amazingly efficient! Prices are totally reasonable too, for this quality of sushi. It was $60 for a meal for two, with several drinks and dessert. Nice! Pros: Great inventive sushi, Great service, Reasonable prices Cons: Small tables more

Astoria's Finest 8/17/2005

J.J.'s is such a wonderful resteraunt, my gf and I eat here once a week religiously. They serve wonderful salads and noodle dishes, but the sushi is the best in Astoria -Hands-down!!! The service is super-friendly, attentive, and knowledgable. Try one of their special rolls (bluefin toro), or the edamame pot stickers as an appetizer. The resteraunt itself if small, but always bustling with the perfect ambiance. They have an extensive sake menu as well as a variety of beers. Did i mention that the prices are very reasonable - Come try this place! Pros: Amazing Food, Service/Price, Inexpensive more
