Best

New Yorker all my life and JG's is still the best. Nothing can beat its charm & amazing burgers. Love the chili and fries as well. Bring cash.

Worst

Too big, no flavor. I don't see what all the fuss is about. Overrated.

JG Melon's 5/23/2006

This place is all about the burgers. Big and juicy and quite straightforward. There is nothing pretentious about this spot. It's the only place in the Upper East Side to kick back with a cold beer and leave your inhibitions about eating with your hands at the door. The round fries are extra and worth your time and energy. The spinach salad is a nice accompaniment for the greasy on the burger. THey do sell turkey burgers for the non read meat crowd. Cash only. more

Good burger spot in UES 5/18/2006

J.G. Melon is a very popular, somewhat unusual spot for the thoroughfare it's smack dab right in the middle in. Amongst all the boutiques and Euro-style restaurants is this lower-key, tavern-like restaurants where the guys go because they're instantly comfortable and the girls go because the guys like it. Their small, limited menu focuses on the basics, like burgers, chicken sandwiches, fries, and salads. It's a very reasonable choice for lunch or dinner. In nice weather, they have a small sidewalk cafe for dining. I personally prefer eating inside, as the sidewalk section is very cramped and not very relaxing, what with the shopping hordes buzzing around you. more

Yes, I am a closet prep... 3/16/2006

I even own the Preppy Handbook. I say that so you're not surprised at who else is here. That means that the atmosphere can be a bit, well, stuffy (you half expect James Spader to come through the door). But who cares when the burgers are this good? If you are meeting friends, I would be sure to have them all present before requesting a table...just a hint. more

Mmmmm 2/22/2006

My favorite burger is the bacon cheeseburger. And holy moly, do they do a great one here which needs nothing to go with it, but a tall cold one. I love the tavern feel, and regardless who I bring here, they ocan find what they like and we eat in happiness (ok, except for the wait, but hey, I'd rather wait for good food than bad). They also get their pie from a great place downtown (I can't remember the name, I am too busy shoveling pie in my face to remember). more

A New York Classic 6/23/2005

J G Melon has been serving New Yorkers for eons and when you go there you'll know why it's been so popular for such a long time. The next time you visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art take the 15 minute walk to J G Melon and top off your day with the best burger the Upper East Side has to offer. more

Great Burgers, if you can get in ... 2/16/2005

For us, J.G. Melon is the embodiment of the classic Yogi Berra line: it's so popular, no one goes there anymore. We have tried to go to J.G. Melon's at least five times. We have only succeeded once (an early lunch), since every other time we tried we were confronted by at least an hour wait. But we did have great burgers the time we went. Good prices too. more
