great place 5/15/2009

Im Japanese and live in NJ. I went to lots of Japanese restaurants but Ise is the only one which knows real japanese foods. I really hate some Japanese restaurants which Chinese or Koreans owned because they dont know Japanese foods besides taste is very terrible. but American ppl who dont know real japanese foods say "" oh I like Japanese foods!!"". If you want to eat real Japanese foods, Ise is the best place to try. more

HATED IT!!!!!! 9/2/2008

I recently went to the restaurant with Clients and we found a dead spider under one of the pieces of sushi. It turned my stomach and I will never go back. The service was not very attentive. The clients were worried that their feet touched the floor in the tatami room. They had concerns about whether the floor was clean underneath the table...other people before them had removed their shoes and those people's feet had been on the floor. This was NOT a pleasant experience; you could not pay me to return. I can not believe the reviews other people posted based on my personal experience. I have never felt complled to add a restaurant review prior to this incident. The decor was dated. There was nothing positive about this dining experience. Cons: Do you want dead spiders with your sushi pieces? more

Authentic Japanese food, Lost in Translation~!!! A must try in NYC! 8/26/2006

As for Japnese food in midtown Manhattan, this is as good as it gets. I recommend ordering the items in the Japanese menu, that's where the surprisingly good dishes are! Yakitori (grilled meat) are fairly priced and delicious, which goes really well with saki or Japanese beer. Sushi and sashimi are fresh in this place, and you can tell the chefs are actually Japanese, not Mexicans or Chinese! Also recommend their soba (chilled noodles) and onigiri (rice-ball). There are private Japanese dining rooms available as well. Service is very good at this place, as expected since the whole staff is Japanese. This place gets a solid 8.0 on my scale, and I will definitely visit this place very soon. Pros: Food, Japanese Liquor, Service Cons: Parking (forget it!!), Music (they play hard rock music) more

good service but mediocre food 8/16/2006

my friend and i came here last night for dinner. we ordered the lobster tempura , sauteed ginger pork, and the queen roll. each thing was approximately $15. the waitress was very nice and honest when we asked her for a recommendation (we went with the pork because of her). the place is pretty quiet too, so it was really easy to get a table. Pros: good service, quiet ambience Cons: disappointing food more

great great great deal! 8/14/2006

I LOVE this restaurant. I cannot stress this enough. The ambience is pretty average, but the service and the FOOD (most importantly) is superb. I usually get some sort of sashimi (favorite is the aje tataki, which I believe is diced mackerel with ginger and green onions on the side), the radish salad, and hot inaniwa (a plainer but, in my opinion, version of udon. Makes for a perfect night out! Pros: WONDERFUL food, clean, nice waitresses Cons: bland decor more

Genuine japanese restaurant 6/28/2006

Good quality food and affordable prices. It´s no coincidence that the restaurant is filled with japanse regulars every night. more

Delicious authentic Japanese 3/28/2006

It's tough to beat the lunch specials -- they change daily and give you a chance to taste a variety of what this restaurant can do. The lunch specials are all around $12-$15, so it's not exactly cheap, but the food really is good. This is not the part of town that I expected to find a high-quality, yet not a fancy/fusion Japanese restaurant and I'm very happy that I know about it. more

good things are served up at small places 1/15/2006

Like a magical world opening up behind a tiny door, ISE offered up a deluge of fresh sushi and the warmth of plummy sake on a blustery January evening. We shared a super lobster tempura, a combination of mouthwatering sushi, spine-tingling wasabi shumai, crunchy spicy squid, yummy tempura icecream and some exquisite sake. Nobody speaks much English so much pointing and sign language ensued but it all added to the charm and wonder of the place. Will definitely go back Pros: fresh sushi, great food, charming service more

Umm, umm, good! 5/2/2005

I just happened to stumble across this little treasure and I am OH SO HAPPY that I did. Their sushi and sashimi are mouthwatering delicious and SUPER fresh! The servers and wait staff were extremely friendly and hospitable. I defiantly will be a return customer! more

Absolutely Fabulous! 4/10/2005

This is definitely THE authentic Japanese restaurant in Manhattan. Yes, the large number of Japanese customers proves it's authenticity. I ordered Negi/Teriyaki combination. It's 2 terriyaki chicken thighs and 5 thinly sliced beef roll with scallion PLUS soup and dessert. IT WAS DELICIOUS! and the price $15! you can't beat that! $15 dinner with such huge amount of tasty food in Manhattan, it's unbelievable! Highly recommended! Pros: excellent food, good service, convenient location Cons: can't think of any, none more

good stuff 8/22/2004

the large Japanese crowd in this restaurant is a testament to the authenticity of the food here. Be sure to get the Izakaya (appetizer) menu - many of yummy little entrees there to check out. the yakitori dishes are very well done. service is prompt and friendly. Pros: food, service, authenticity more

Most Authentic Japanese Restaurant 9/20/2002

ABSOLUTELY LOVE this restaurant! Food is super fresh, and the items on the daily special menu are beyond your imagination. Try to order from the Japanese exclusive menu. There are a lot of hidden treasures in it. Experiment! Teriyaki must be pretty good there, but don't waste your opportunity to discover more delicious and authentic dishes. I agree, it's a hidden gem of midtown. Pros: Authentic, Delicious, Clean Cons: Slow Service more
