Neat set up, but parking is annoying and food is average 3/18/2009

I like the Iron Cactus. Thruthfully, I forget it about it sometimes because I don't make it down there all that often. The setup is really neat and works out really well for days with nice weather and either being on the patio upstairs or when they open up all the glass downstairs to the outside. The food and service are average but that isn't why you are going there. The best time to go there is a nice spring evening when there is a band playing in the city park area that the iron cactus opens up on to. more

Great location, ok food 3/27/2006

Ever since I lived in Austin I've been getting sucked into the Iron Cactus' mojo! Its always a cool spot ... great locations, great atmosphere. Everyone always thinks its cool. But the food is almost always sub par--not bad, but just barely ok. I have had some decent fajitas there, but everything else was mediocre. Now, they do have some great drinks and a nice downtown patio. And I can't speak for the 3rd floor tapas bar. Oh--lunchtime service is also quite slow in my experience. more

Best Mexican Hit 7/21/2005

Exposed-brick walls, stylish wood furniture, fireplaces and bright Mexican landscape paintings create an urban, easygoing vibe. The second floor has an open kitchen for tapas and a low-lit bar with a balcony overlooking Pegasus Plaza. The third story is an open-air patio with a full menu and space for mingling. Service is casual, but attentive. The menu aims for the same level of hip sophistication as the interior design, with most items featuring some twist on a classic. Spicy jalapeno calamari is served alone or as part of the cactus platter with flautas, quesadillas, spinach-artichoke dip and warm, thick tostadas. Combination fajitas come with side dishes like thick guacamole and bold charro beans. Lower on the spice scale, Santa Fe skewers offer mild chunks of sirloin, Gulf shrimp and fire-grilled vegetables served over Mexican rice. more
