Independent Motors

Rip-off artists, Took my Nissan Sentra there today to have the AC recharged. I paid $194.54 to have them tell me that I have a hole in the condenser and that it will cost me an additional $772 to have it replaced for a grand total of $966.! I picked it up and paid nearly $200 for nothing but a diagnosis that I'm not even sure I trust. A friend at work suggested I call Keep Kool in Denver, where I was quoted a price of $400 - $450 total. Sure wish I'd asked in the first place! If money is no object, as I'm sure is the case with many Boulderites, these guys may do okay work but if money is tight, as it is with me, stay far away from this place. more

I keep going back to them whenever I need something done on my Infiniti because their rates are reasonable and, more importantly, I trust them. They are honest when I ask if something needs to be done right away or not. And because I get an honest answer, I usually go ahead and have the work done if it will need to be done eventually because I don't feel like I am being talked into expensive services I don't need. I also find them very convenient: free wifi, free coffee, free loaner cars, and within walking distance to shopping and restaurants. more

I brought my '97 Ford Crown Vic in yesterday, and told Kevin that although my "vent" was blowing hot air, when my heater was on "automatic" -- thermostat -- no hot air blew out of the vents. Since I had had a previous problem which turned out to be a vent "door," when he said it sounded like that was the problem, and he might have to order a new part from Denver (if it was necessary), it sounded right, and I left the car and walked around Boulder all day (I'm a tourist, which he knew). When I came back in this morning to get my car, Kevin explained that there was nothing wrong with the heater system, and called Chris out (their Ford expert), who went out to the car with me and explained how the Ford's heater system works and why mine was working normally. He also explained the thermostatic control of the air conditioning works differently (automatically blowing cold air from the top vents). As he was explaining it to me I realized being from southern California I was used to the climate control working exactly as he explained it...well, I've made a few other mistakes in my life. The very pleasant surprise came when I went back into the office to pay for their time (I knew they examined the system at least twice, and Kevin had said he even drove the car around the block to see for himself what was happening). Independent Motors has been servicing my 93' Toyota for 17 years. I have no concern that they will perform any unneccessary repairs because they are honest, good mechanics. They are totally friendly, reliable, competent and the prices are reasonable. Haven't had any problem whatsoever with them in over twenty years. The building may look a little worn but, hey, why pay for some car dealer's temple. more

Over the years I have had Independent Motors take care of 2 vehicles: a 1997 Nissan Pick-up and a 2007 Prius. The guys are always friendly, pleasant and right on with their quotes for work. They never proceed without calling me first (in case they found something unexpected). They also take the extra time to give each vehicle a “once over” and make recommendations for any future needs (when brake pads will need to be replaced, etc...). I attribute the fact that my little truck runs like it’s brand new to the excellent care by Tony. And because Independent Motors is pro-active, I’ve never had any major issues or expenses. more

I have been taking my cars (one Toyota and two Subarus) to Independent Motors for 10+ years. They have always done excellent work, on everything from engines and timing belts to broken window winders. I have found them to be honest and reliable and to do great work at a fair price. This has to be one of the best auto repair shops around. I like the fact that most of the employees have worked there for many years, are so knowledgeable, friendly and courteous and I don't get ripped off as regards cost! more

I have taken my older model Subaru to the great guys at Independent for many years - they have always done excellent work. They go out of their way to look for used parts to save me money and I feel completely comfortable that they are only doing the work that is necessary. They were also helpful when I was looking for a good reliable used car for my teenage daughter and gave advice on years and models to look for and avoid. more

I'm a tech guy, not a car guy. Don't have the first clue about cars though I can fix any computer. The team at Independent Motors was exactly the type of support I was looking for. The helping me understand the problem, how they diagnosed it, and what needed to be fixed. They're weren't pushy, were super friendly, and very knowledgeable. Ignition on my truck broke and Independent Motors had it replaced within 24 hours. The staff is excellent and friendly, and the shop has the friendly vibe that can only come from having been around so long with so many familiar faces. A+ experience and service! more

They charged my $200 to fix a simple window problem (manual window, not electric). Forgot to check it at the shop, but when I got home it was still broken. Went back to the shop and they said I must have broken it again on the way home. Total rip-off. more

Independent Motors do a good job considering how busy they are all of the time, i swear there is half of boulder wanting to get all of their cars serviced at the same time. the staff is courteous and the facility was kept really clean. I have been bringing my car here for a couple years now and i find it to be a great experience every time i bring in my Toyota. more

Every time i have taken my car to independent i have received nothing but quality work, and great customer service. I have no idea where the previous review came from but i highly doubt its truthfulness. I am a longtime customer and i have always loved Bill and Joe. They are great at what they do so i always come back. more

I brought my car down there 7 times in the last 2 months, I've had to bring my car back there every week sense I took it in. They tried to assure me my car was being taken care of after they scammed me out of 3,000 dollars, after I payed that outrageous sum of money, my engine light turned on while I was driving the car home. My car sat in their shop practically the whole time they had it, they misplaced the casing to the whole underneath of my car, and then finally, after the 7th time bringing it in and it sitting there for 2 weeks, they said they tore it apart and they don't know how to work on it. I had to bring my car down there 7 times, I had to pay 3,000 dollars (money that I slaved for, let me tell you), just for these guys to misplace 1,000 dollar covers for my car and tell me they don't know what they are doing. They took my car to a different shop and now they are trying to charge me $600 dollars for something that should have been covered and fixed months ago. They did a terrible job, I've been crying my eyes out because I've been so stressed on how I'm going to pay for these bills. I really can't say I have ever felt this wronged and stupid, ever. Please do not make the same mistake I did and take your car to independent motors. They need to be shut down for goo. more

Since 1983, Bill and Holly Bender and Independent motors have been the exclusive source of maintainence of my 1983 Sentra that had 205,000 miles when I sold it and was running like a top. I'm still driving my 1993 Pathfinder which gets 20 MGP and it's odometer just turned 220,000 miles! I'm shooting for the big 300 K for this vehicle. Routine maintainence is cheaper than new car payments. more
