As a trained chef who loves quality, I can say they DO have some of the hard to find and high quality products one cannot find without a long and difficult search, I like them for...

Unreliable. Terrible customer service 11/18/2011

Today, In Good Taste canceled yet ANOTHER hands-on children's cooking class. This is the THIRD TIME they've done this. We signed our son up for a knife skills class earlier this year, and they cancelled it. When they called to cancel, we enrolled him in the next one a couple months later. They canceled that one also. Low enrollment. Last month, I tried to enroll my son in a three-day hands on class for the week of Thanksgiving. The class was waitlist only at that point (max 12 students), but I received an email later that day saying space had opened up. Yay! Today is Friday. The class was supposed to start next Monday. Got an email confirmation this morning, but I just received a call saying the class was canceled due to low enrollment. They offered to place me in the December class. Um, no. That would be like paying $200 to disappoint my child on purpose. I can do that for free if I want to. I asked for a refund, and the rather dippy girl on the phone said,""I'll have my co-worker call you in 30 minutes. I can't do refunds and she's at lunch."" Brilliant. more

Bad Customer Service 4/25/2011

I don't know how the classes are, or how the food is, because I purchased a hands-on class for my wife for her birthday and they cancelled the night before. Really discouraging when the whole class/night out was a surprise for my wife and I receive a call Monday afternoon (class is Tuesday evening) letting me know that the class was cancelled and the next one like it is over a month away. How can anyone plan on this if they'll just cancel the night before. Guess I get to run around town tonight and try and find something last minute, And yes her birthday is tomorrow. Arrrgggghhh!! more

Great classes! 2/24/2011

I have taken classes from In Good Taste over many years and have enjoyed both the information conveyed and the excellent instructors. more

I love this cute little store. The staff greets me, then leaves me alone until I need something. In Good Taste may not have quite as vast a selection as Sur La Table (I shop at Sur La Table also), but their prices are much more reasonable. The same tiny Epicurean cutting board that I saw at Sur La Table for $13.95 was $9.95 at In Good Taste. Seriously, a $4 mark up at Sur La Table. They also have biodegradable bags. So, go to In Good Taste first. If you don't find what you need, go down a few blocks to Sur La Table. Pros: Not corporate, better prices, environmentally friendly, good selection, helpful (but not annoying) staff Cons: If you're looking for something VERY specific, you might not find EXACTLY what you need? more

In BAD taste 8/20/2008

If I could rate this place zero stars, I would. Long story short, they have given me the run around on using a large gift certificate not once, not twice, but THREE times. They have essentially succeeded in stealing my money, citing the woes of being a ""small business"" with ""no legal obligation"" for why they will not honor my gc. POOR business practices, if you ask me, and I will let everyone know how incompetent their staff and especially undiplomatic their owner is. And I will certainly not be a future patron - oh, wait, they haven't even given me the opportunity to BE a patron of their store. Pros: I know where NOT to go. Cons: Worst customer service ever, shady business practices. more

This is the BEST place on the planet 2/9/2008

Wow! I was surfing on citysearch and was appalled at the previous review (see below). EVERY time I have gone to In Good Taste I have been treated with the utmost respect. The staff is so helpful and professional; all of my questions are always answered honestly. They greeted me with a smile as soon as I walked in the door, asked me if I needed any help, and then left me alone to peruse the nooks and crannies of culinary gadgets and cookware. When I did have a question, they were there with the answer. When I was ready to check out, they were there ready to serve me. Pros: Everything Cons: Parking can be difficult, but save the earth; take the bus or streetcar. more

Good thing Sur La Table is right up the street 1/10/2008

For our Anniversary this year I thought I would surprise my wife with a cooking class from In Good Taste. We've been talking about doing one for many years but for some reason never got around to it. Low and behold one was available on the night of our Anniversary. I made the reservations, arranged for a sitter, hyped up a ""never before"" Anniversary surprise. A few days before I received a call from In Good Taste informing me that the class had been canceled because of a conflict of interest on the schedule. Ok... scheduling issues and cancellations are part of life, I understand. But I find their offer of letting me select another night at the same price insulting. Good customer service means taking care of your customer not saying oh too bad you can come some other time. I'll be sure to share this one with my coworkers and friends. Pros: No Clue Cons: Customer Service more

Ignorance is not bliss in business 11/30/2007

Staff has little clue about products outside of what they have in store (how do they stay competitive?) Not knowledgeable about what to look for in an olive oil. I went to Elephants Delicatessen instead and got my fresh Olive Oil and had my questions answered . Customer service needs to shape up or loose business. Pros: Catering Cons: Customer service more

a wasted trip 3/18/2007

City search steared me wrong this time. I made a special trip to ""In good taste"" to see what treasures they might have. The gormet foods were nothing out of the ordinary, pretty basic fare you would find in a fine grocery store. The selection of books were blah, and the kitchen supplies were standard mall store products with the one exception being a selection of CIA products that were in the back of the store. Pros: Located near a better store Cons: Staff knowledge was lacking. more

I have ""to learn how to do"" something or I Iust stay home...In Good Taste Store lets me do it all - eat great food and learn how to buy the correct utensil to cook my food in. The staff are very knowledgeable and I continue to learn how to cook as well. Pros: whatever you need in cookware or delicacies IN GOOD TASTE has it all Cons: on-street parking but most places are this way now more

IN GOOD TASTE fills the gap for me...I had never learned how to cook but I know what good food is....when I come to Portland, to eat at In Good Taste at their cooking school and Friday night dinners is a must. The food is holistic!. Pros: food is always delicious and the portions just right Cons: have not any more

IN GOOD TASTE is a sojourn for me when I visit my family in Portland. I am always more than pleased with the food preparations and servings along with the choices of wine is just awesome! I also learn a great deal about food and the cooking processes. Pros: on street parking but garage is also available - never had a problem Cons: none really more

MY HAPPY BIRTHDAY PARTY is always at IN GOOD TASTE at a COOKING CLASS or at FRIDAY NIGHT DINNERS! Pros: always spotless clean facility and served to make me feel i have arrived Cons: parking sometimes is not so great - for dinners and classes is always okay. more

Fabulously delicious food. Spotless! Everything in cookware! 12/7/2006

Every time I enter the store I am overwhelmed by the cleanliness - it is spotless! I only shop here because I know they have what I want in cooking items. My cooking school experiences are more of the same - holistic food, fabulous tasting always - and the courteous serversI The wine selections are everything anyone would want - they have it all! Truly, this is a one-stop shopping and eating experience. My favorite culinary experience. Pros: Service; Fabulous cooks that know how to cook anything! more

In Good Taste 11/8/2005

This store is a culinary adventure with one of the finest wine selections in town. In Good Taste has a terrific assortment of gourmet foods and let's not forget the chocolates. As far as kitchen wares go, if I want a tool that works, this is the store. Combine those assets with a knowledgeable staff and a rare assortment of products, this makes for a fantastic shopping experience. more

Fantastic store!! 11/5/2005

I've been to many classes and dinners at In Good Taste, as well as shopping there frequently, and I have to say it's one of the most entertaining ways to spend an evening. The addition of the new chef has shown to be a great move. The food is delicious, and she is very personable. They also have a wonderful wine department where one can find almost anything. And if they don't currently have something on their shelves, they will track it down for you. Pros: Wine department, Cooking School, Helpful staff Cons: Parking more

The best gourmet store in the NW!! 10/31/2005

The quality of food is Oregon's fineness - cooked with the highest quality of vegetables and meats. Tremendous! Best buy for a night out on the town-quality wines to purchase! Pros: quality of food, serving with grace, cooking-holistic more

A Must Visit 10/28/2005

I live in Seattle, no small amount of shopping opportunity there - travel to Portaland on a regular basis and consistently make a point of visiting ""In Good Taste""! I've never been disappointed by the staff, who I find extremely knowledgable, and helpful. I know that many of their staff are professionally trained and experienced in the culinary arts and wine. They consistently have a great selection of new items not to be found in Seattle or Portland. Yes, the parking could be more convinent, but it's Portland and the Pearl District. Do yourself, your kitchen and taste buds a favor and visit. Pros: Knowledgable, Great Selection, Helpful Cons: Parking, Nothing Else more

Great Classes 10/28/2005

After reading previous reviews I felt I needed to chime in. First of all, they no longer have a restaurant. The specialize in gourmet products, wines and the cooking school. Second of all, I am surprised that someone felt treated poorly. I am not your typical ""Pearl District Snob"" (I don't even live in the Pearl) and I was treated quite professionally. The classes are fabulous! The instructors are very informative and will patiently explain step by step what they are doing and, if you want to know, why they are doing it that way. The food is great, the wines are great, and the atmosphere is fun. As for parking, yep, that is a bummer. They are on the Streetcar line.... Pros: intimate setting, knowledgable staff, locally owned Cons: parking more
