Best fried shrimp batter in history! 7/25/2009

Vegas cuisine on the whole doesn't impress me much because it's mostly chains and there aren't too many original places to eat. The one oasis in the desert is The Hush Puppy. Hailing from the south seems to have hardwired my DNA for craving fried food in times of stress and jubilation and The Hush Puppy is my fried food fix. In Vegas you have to overlook the total lack of social graces and despite what others have reported here, I've never had a problem in the drive thru or inside the restaurant. Decide for yourself. Pros: All you can eat nights Cons: Doesn't open until 5pm more

Not as good as it used to be, but still fair 4/24/2008

The only reason I'm giving an average rating is because years ago they stopped serving the "freshwater" catfish a few years ago, and I still don't understand why they did. Oh my god that was some good fish. The farm raised took a long time to get used to because it's more moist and soft, and I preferred the crispy, better tasting freshwater version. Pros: very nice salad bar Cons: stopped serving freshwater catfish years ago more

Worst experience, full circle! 4/15/2008

I have been to both Hush Puppies on numerous accounts. I had the worst experience at the W. Charleston location on 4-14-08. The hostess (appeared to be of Caribbean descent) was very territorial of her podium area. She very loudly asked me to not stand near it and to move away! It's not so much that she didn't want me standing there, it was more so in her delivery. Rude. I was told I would be seated in 20-25 minutes. I was seated in 35, not a big deal, but what bothered me was that she had seated several other parties from 2-5 person groups. Finally right when I walked up to her to inquire, she yelled my name out. She simply was unfriendly, crude and rude. Once seated it took a while for the crab to come out, keep in mind Mondays is all you can eat crab, so I'm guessing they are constantly boiling the stuff. Our food server was nice. She was the only part of the experience that was okay. The crab was the worst I had ever had. It was over-cooked because it was very hard to remove from the shell. Normally once you open it you can remove the meat in its entirety. I had to fight to pull out the meat this time. Overall as the title reads, the worst experience. I won't encourage anyone to go the W. Charleston location due to the very rude hostess. I surely won't go to that location again. Maybe in a good year I might head back to the Nellis location. The food is comfort food, and it has been that for quite some time. Needless to say it left a bad taste in my mouth this time and nothing was comforting. I normally speak to a manager if I feel I'm being poorly treated, however I felt it would fall on deaf ears. I don't know why I just did, so I didn't even make an attempt to speak with him or her. It would be nice if Hush Puppies had a "comment" section on they're website but they don't. HP, if you're reading this you might want to look into that. Next time I'll just go to Costco and get some Alaskan King crab and enjoy in my home. Pros: Good when they're on their game Cons: Rude hostess and poorly cooked crab more

Editorial

  • In Short
It's been around for 26 years and is still going strong. Maybe there's a gimmick, but it's not the decor. The catch here is catfish, either farm-raised or freshwater or whole fiddlers, breaded and fried and served by the score. There's also shrimp, oysters, clam strips, barbecue ribs, chicken and steaks. The exotic runs to alligator tail and frog legs. Everything comes with hush puppies and a trip to the small salad bar.
