My family was new to Greenville and we had heard that the schools were good. So, we bought a house and moved in. My son started sixth grade and it has been a nightmare! My son is very smart and has never had problems before. Some of the parents in my neighborhood told me that I needed to make sure that I was talking to my son about narcotic abuse because Hughes Academy has a problem with narcotics and these parents had pulled their children out of the schools when they went to this middle school because of all of the problems. I did not have trouble with my son getting into these problems because he is strong in this area, however, I did have a lot of trouble with severe bullying, not only from the students but from the teachers as well. One teacher told my son that he was so ugly he fell out of the ugly tree and smacked every branch on the way down. Another teacher told my son that he was so annoying that if a child were to fight him she wouldn't stop it (in front of the whole class). I spoke with the principle about this and she made many promises, none of which were ever followed through on. After one of the teachers struck him in the head knowing that he had a concussion, I pulled him out and am now homeschooling him. After that teacher struck him in the head when the class was over he tried to go to the office to call me, and he was told that he could either go to his next class or be written an office referral. He was to scared to get an office referral, so he just went to his next class. Also, everytime I went to pick him up from school, the office could never find him.
Pros: because it is public, it is free; the lady that answers the phone is nice
Cons: teachers, administration, bullying, narcotics, abuse, lunch is at 10 AM, amounts of homework, the most unorganized school I have ever seen, etc.
